I freely admit I am NOT knowlegdable about any of this.  Just posting for the benefit of any seasoned ham who might be interested.

A post-apocalyptic tale of love, loss and redemption. And zombies!

There was quite the discussion over on the Zed.  Two camps - "OH HORROR" NOT TYPE ACCEPTED/APPROVED (CLUTCHES PEARLS)

and the other camp - wooowee,  cool tech, look at what I can make it do!   (proceeds to do lots of odd modes etc.  ie Hack the device.

BTW - ARS rigs are not nor ever have been "Type accepted/Type approved".   It is up to the licensee to meet the technical rules.

Sadly, most ham ops have no knowledge or calibrated test equipment to 'meet the technical rules'.

Me? - hack the bugger to death!

I'd much rather be a disappointed pessimist than a horrified optimist....

Sorry guys - closed my Amazon account and am out of the fiction biz.

From the BK4819 datasheet:
QuoteThe BK4819 is a half duplex TDD FM transceiver operating within 18 MHz - 660 MHz, 840 MHz - 1300 MHz band range for worldwide personal radio.
That could be hacked to one heck of a scanner!
