This is some serious shit. Someone took out multiple power substations in NC. With gunfire. Countywide curfew 9pm to 5am. That sounds alot like martial law. Or the beginning stages.

I know right? This is some Red Dawn shit. I couldn't believe it when I read it. But AP reported it too.

Yeah. I immediately started searching for verification since I'd heard nothing. (actual watching of regular news is starting to give me panic attacks) and I found that around the same period civilians dressed in war gear were proudly (sporting big grins to news camers) disrupting a couple of other places too.

1. That this has happened at all is terrifying.
2. That this could be my country men doing this to non combat civilians is breaking me which is now becoming as fragile as dried flowers.
2. Were this found to be foreign interference it would merely be terrifying.

I mentioned 10 or 12 years ago on the old forum that I could just about shut down a decent sized city's electricity infrastructure with a deer rifle and one box of boolitz....A mod admonished me for revealing such info.  :icon_crazy:

We've had some large downline regulators and a few transfomers damaged by gun fire, but so far none of our substations have been attacked that way.

I actually remember that. Whatever happened to Palliden Press? I'll bet they had a book on that. You know there is a special forces manual on that for sure.

They actually went out of business back in 2018.

Apparently one of the founders died while on vacation in 2017 and the company decided to close soon after that.

Trying to avoid politics and stick to the facts as I know them:

A Proud Boys group was in Monroe to protest a scheduled drag (drag queens, not cars) show.  There may have been others there, but Proud Boys are the ones I know for sure were there to protest the show.

A woman who I believe to be local to Monroe posed for selfies with the group of Proud Boys.  When the power went out, she posted on social media that power was out and she knew why.  She later posted that the police had interviewed her and she told them that the power being out was God's will and that God was punishing Monroe.  Supposedly, there is also a picture of the local Sheriff happily posing with her, leading some to believe the investigation would be stymied by the local constabulary, but it's now in FBI hands.

The accusation I have seen is that the Proud Boys who showed up to "protect" Monroe from drag queens are the ones who shot at the power stations for the purpose of cutting power to the show.  That, of course, is speculation without further evidence which I hope comes to light quickly.

I've read similar rumors.

Not asking that anyone post it. As its most certainly not legal. But I would love to know more about the simple mechanics of this. And other types of these "procedures". I guess I'll consult old man internet.

Just as a security discussion these things fascinate me. In other directions as well. Like how could one take positive advantage of existing industrial and public operations in a paw. Like more advanced that a silcock key. Lol. I guess these are more underground discussions for a different place. But things like this and even as small as improvised weapons have always been fascinating to me.

I recently went into a rabbit hole of tools and techniques used by fire departments to force open doors. I was amazed at all there was on youtube. There are also several sites on improvised weapons. But it would be cool if there was a Palliden Press type site that listed all this stuff.

I remember back in the day when I was starting out as a private investigator. I learned so much from the Palliden press books i purchased.

Its weird because the LAPDs twitter acct has been announcing rewards for information about any damage to AT&T cables or facilities. As if it had been happening and thus the reward and request for information.

What worries me is the possibility/probability of copy-cat incidents.
Once something like this is seen as "successful", groups of *bad actors* or even just individuals with a grudge (or a screw loose) may see committing such an act as beneficial to their cause.
Besides various militia groups, there are climate protestors, eco-warrior types, even just people pissed off by their latest power bill, who may see such an incident as a legitimate way to express their anger.

I do hope power companies, etc., take steps to provide extra security or harden up what has now become targets to prevent future incidents.

We had a guy take a chainsaw and cut down a dozen pine trees on one of our 3-phase circuits. It was in a rural part of our service area and only affected 200 or so customers. His reason? His wife kicked him out of the house so he decided to take away her air conditioning.  :icon_crazy:

Seriously you can buy one of these at HomeDepot for less than the cost gas for your chainsaw + labor, and only effect your wife's a/c and soap operas.

But if you really want to get smart just pull the fuse out of the a/c units power supply. When you make up you won't have to spend a lot of money on repairs.

Good point but ...and while I am hesitant to call someone stupid... I suspect that the guy has bad luck with critical thinking.

A restraining order throws a completely different spin on that. Crash the pickup into the transformer pole/box. That happens here in my AO about once a week. I could never figure why on a cool, clear, windless day, the power goes out. It's all those restraining orders in their pickups.

In my AO, it's usually inattentive idiots driving into the poles and causing outages. Either they're texting while driving, drunk or just generally dumb.

Or some odd combination of the three.

We used to live about 300 or 400 meters from a full size powerline. It was massive. I remember climbing a small way up one of the towers. The entire thing was not protected. Just a big swath of trees and brush cut out of the forest. And a shitty dirt road. Iirc it was two rows of towers. I shot my first deer on that powerline. And about a mile down the powerline was a small gravel pit. Where we shot firearms for I guess 40 or 50 years. I learned to shoot there when I was 5 yrs old.

But then in maybe the 90s or early 2000s some knobs from the city moved about a mile away. And complained about it and got it shut down. It was a deep pit. No way you could hurt anyone. I ignored the signs and pit they dug in the road and sighted in my Mauser a few years ago.

I always wondered if this had anything to do with my grandparents cancer. They lived most of their lives closest to the powerline.
