Quote from: 12_Gauge_Chimp on March 02, 2023, 02:29:21 PMI think maybe the Zippo of the peanut lighter world would probably be IMCO, but I don't know if they're still in business or not.
The original manufacturer closed a couple of years back. They did however sell the name to a japanese one, so their most famous lighter version is still being produced. They are now made in china, but as far as I can tell the quality is the same.
If I was a well organised person I'd post some pictures to compare the made in austria vs china, but I have no idea where they currently are.

I remember IMCO going out of business, but I didn't know they had sold off the name to a Japanese corporation.
You can find them on Aliexpress now.  Let me see if I have a link...

That doesn't look as well sealed as a peanut lighter though.

I've gone through several peanut lighters now.  The first one was from CountyComm and worked fine until one day I found that I only had the lid for it, as the body had come unscrewed and fallen off my keychain somewhere.

Not willing to spend a bunch of money only to lose it like that again (I have a history of the same thing happening to keychain flashlights, which is why I stopped using ones that have a twist-on function), I bought a cheaper one on Amazon.  That one worked for a few years, until the "cheap" aspect caught up to me when the internals on it came apart.  For now, I've been carrying an arc lighter ("plasma" lighter).  Not as ideal, but until I come with something else, it'll have to do.

The rechargeable Olight keyring lights don't come apart, so nothing to get lost if it unscrews, it just opens the USB C port.

Plenty of DIY videos on YT.  That's how I made the Bolviator.  :greenguy:

I've always had a fondness for the Permanent Matches similar to these. They work pretty good, last for a long time before needing to change the wick, and the new versions don't leak anymore.

These look worth making. I would make one with glow in the dark 550.

I've thought about this and I think the lighter fluid is un needed. I figure it would evaporate. None of the other videos I've seen on this method use anything but wax. I bought the parrafin and cotton rounds but have not made them yet.
I remember watching that video when you first posted it and thinking it was pretty cool.  I wonder if the parrafin somehow fixes or binds to the lighter fluid and prevents it from evaporating.

Maybe it's like cooking: follow the recipe to the letter the first time you make something, so you have a baseline how it's supposed to be.  Then start changing things up. :smiley_chinrub:
So made these last night. Not hard at all. Used only the paraffin , no lighter  fluid. Half a block of paraffin made 12  with a 13th not completely soaked through. After they cooled , I took one outside  and tried it out. I tore it  to expose the cotton fiber and with one strike of ferro rod it caught flame and burned well for seven minutes. Wasn't trying to start a fire , but no doubt in my mind this would make campfire starting easy

What does turpintine do? I guess the question is how does it waterproof? I always thought it was a flammable. Don't recall if I've ever used it.

My understanding is that using the turpentine forces all of the water out of the wood of the match, allowing the matches to become impervious to water due to the turpentine impregnating the wood. The only issue I'd see is that eventually the turpentine will deteriorate over time, meaning that the matches will only be good for a few months before they need to be redone.

It's distilled tree resin. Think Jurassic park.
I guess if you used 'mineral' turpentine that wouldn't last 'cause its not real turpentine.

Oh I knew that. I probably should have said that. Several of the videos or pages I've seen where they use "turpentine" they mention it degrading. I always assumed they were using the white spirits version when that was mentioned. I just neglected to say that I would recommend using the natural version over the mineral spirits version...

Wouldn't wax be better? I guess not if your were fighting fires. Lol. But for everybody else I'd think wax would work.

Personally I'd think that wax would be easier and better long term.

I wonder if it would clog up the striker material?

Possibly. When I get a chance I'll make a few with my boys and report back.
