Famed director David Lynch also passed away today at the age of 78.

ETA: Correction, David Lynch passed away on January 15th, not the 16th.

So he didn't pass the same day as Bob Uecker as I'd previously thought.

I am really, really bummed about this.  I watched Twin Peaks when it originally aired and kept pinching myself that I was living in an age when something that brilliant and quirky was on network television.

This one actually kind of shocked me a bit. I knew David Lynch wasn't doing too good health wise, but still.

QuoteAutomotive product legend Hal Sperlich passed away Monday at 95, but his memory lives on in the millions of pony cars and minivans that ply our highways. Sperlich was known as the father of two American icons, the Ford Mustang and Chrysler minivan. Colleagues remember him as one of the most significant product developers of his generation.

That one hit me hard. One of my all-time favorite actors.
He always made me believe. No matter what character he played, he WAS that character for the duration of the movie. Although not a great movie, I loved his performance in Bat 21.
You never felt like he was A C T I N G (main reason I don't like Meryl Streep....even the critics are like "Look at her A C T!" ).
Hackman just was the character.

Definitely one of the giants of my generation.  Two thoughts:

1) something klugy about his death, as his 63 yo wife and even the family dog were also found dead  :smiley_chinrub: :smiley_shrug:

2) growing up, I remember my mom getting depressed when certain actors or singers died. "All my childhood idols are dying off," was her lament. I couldn't understand why that was so upsetting to her. They were just a bunch of washed up performers from old movies or who sang old-timey music, I remember thinking.  Now I understand  :-[

First thing I thought of is CO poisoning (and later I saw several articles reporting that Gene's daughter said the same thing).  I imagine that we'll find out more in the coming weeks, but if there truly wasn't any sort of foul play, then this would be a fairly straightforward explanation for why he, his wife, and their dog all died at the same time.

What I'm hearing is a number of pills were found where Gene Hackman's wife's body was found.

So now Santa Fe police are treating the deaths as 'suspicious' and apparently the carbon monoxide poisoning angle is out the window.

The more information comes out on the Hackman death, the more it sounds like he fell and couldn't get back up and the dog may have died because there wasn't anybody to release it from the crate and it starved.  I wonder if his wife had been away and found them already dead and overdosed to join them.  Sounds like she fell near the sink where the pills were found and her fall upset a space heater.  Reports now are saying there was decomposition that indicated they had been dead for quite some time before they were found.

Not just decomp., but mummification as well. That would take at least 2 or 3 weeks in that climate, I think.

Hackman had a pacemaker. Last "event" was February 17th. So, I guess we have a day of death for him.
Title: Re: Notable Deaths of 2025
Post by: 12_Gauge_Chimp on March 01, 2025, 02:14:40 PM
I may have a theory as to what may have happened to Gene Hackman and his wife.

It's possible Hackman's wife fell in the bathroom, knocking over the pill bottle and upsetting the space heater. Hackman hearing this, rushes to help, and finds his wife on the floor possibly unconscious, so he rushes to grab the phone to dial 911.

And while under immense strain and stress, his heart gives out and he collapses where his body is ultimately found days later.

Alternatively, Gene Hackman may have had an episode (hence the pacemaker thing) and his wife may have gone to the bathroom to get some medication (for either him or herself.). She could've been under an immense strain and herself had a heart attack, thus collapsing, dropping the medication that was found near her body and knocking over the space heater as she fell.

I cannot say with any certainty that she was the one but...

I have to tell a story now, from back when I was very young.  My father divorced my mother in 1960 and got custody of me.  I was 4.  He worked then as a clerk at Domino Sugar and started dating a nurse he met.  Eventually, they married.  For a while we lived in her tiny apartment overlooking the ocean liner berths in NYC but we moved to a bigger apartment in 1962 when my step-mother got pregnant with my half-sister.  The apartment was on the 5th floor of an old brick apartment building on the Upper West Side, just a block from Central Park.  Next door to our apartment lived a husband and wife who had two small Scottie dogs that I loved to play with, so I visited often.  They were German, their last name was Friendlander, and they were both survivors of Theresienstadt.  They seemed very old to me at the time, but looking back now, I realize they were scarcely older than my father, so late 20s, early 30s.  I used to love visiting them and Mister Friedlander would tell me stories about the war, a little about the camp, and a lot about being hungry all the time and having to scrounge through rubble, a little like my friends and I playing in the rubble of demolished buildings that were being torn down in the area for "urban renewal".  (They were our playgrounds, those wrecked old buildings, and I still have scars on me from cuts and scrapes earned in them.)  Mrs. Friedlander was pretty quiet, and her German accent much heavier than her husband's.  When they had their afternoon glasses of schnapps (cherry) they would give me a little glass of "Tom Collins mixer".  This was a carbonated soft drink similar to Sprite in taste, but with bits of fruit in it, and was intended to be used in making a Tom Collins cocktail.  I developed a taste for some German foods from having dinner with them.  They were nice people, and I missed them very much after we moved to a newly built NYC housing project.  My father told me they had moved but he didn't know where, so we never kept in touch.

I have no earthly idea if this is the Mrs. Friedlander of my childhood.  She could have been.  The face seems similar, but these are 60+ year-old memories and who knows, maybe she was, maybe she was.

Aleha hashalom. Zikhronah livrakha.  :-[

Yes, I knew it was a common last name, particularly amongst German Jews, but the camp identity is what did it for me.  Being a young child, I was curious about their tattoos.  My dad had tattoos from his military days that I was always curious about.  When Mr. Friedlander told me what the tattoos were for, and that they put them on people they were planning to kill, I got concerned about my dad, so he had to explain about the camp he and his wife were in, and about the war's end, rescuing them from that fate.  That did three things: First, it made me forever hate tattoos of all kinds, second, it sparked a lifelong interest in the history of WWII, third, it made me one of the very few, non-Jewish Americans who had ever heard of Theresienstadt.  So seeing that last name and that she'd been in that camp... the world suddenly shrank very small for me.

David Attenborough turned 99 this year, Tom Baker is in his 90s as well.

The next decade is going to be pretty sad. A lot of the action stars, classic British actors and 70s and 80s musicians are getting up there in age.

From what I've read, Billy Joel has what's called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, which is treatable and apparently his condition is improving.

This is according to an interview he did with Bill Maher earlier this month.

Still, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to break out the bubble wrap just in case.

He had a notable (but short) appearance in The Last of Us.  I'll never forget "Who's this little psycho?"  He was largely typecast, but always brought an aura of authenticity to his acting, which is probably why he was type cast.  73 is too damn young.

Seems like the Grim Reaper is making a "Greatest Hits" album and needed some help with it.

That's probably why he's been collecting musicians these last few months.

There's a lot I'd really like to say, but instead I'll just suggest that if someone thinks it is okay to kill someone because of a difference of political opinion they need to do us a favor and suck-start a pistol.

Agreed. And in a similar apolitical vein, I'll add that we're living in an increasingly turbulent time when the appetite for solving differences through violent means is growing on all sides.  As preppers, it would be irresponsible not to take note of that and take steps to ensure personal safety in the weeks, months and (sadly) years ahead.

Like DarkAxel, there's so much more I could say -  about this heinous and cowardly crime in particular as well as the wider issue of political violence. But such discussions have no place here at UFOZS.

The name of the suspected shooter of Charlie Kirk has been announced in Utah, and the state will seek the death penalty.  The suspect's name WILL NOT be repeated on this site!  This is our formal policy for ALL such cases.  We will not help give them the fame they crave.

As Utah has two forms of execution, lethal injection and firing squad, I think it behooves us all to petition the state to choose firing squad, and I hereby volunteer for said squad.

Burt Meyer, dead at 99 (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/21/arts/design/burton-meyer-dead.html).

You don't know of him by name, but if any part of your childhood was spent in the 1960s, 1970s or 1980s, you sure as shootin' know his role in your childhood.  The toy designer who helped develop a list of toys that read like a Hall of Fame Roll Call from my childhood: Lite Brite, Rock'em Sock'em Robots, Mouse Trap, Toss Across and more.  If bringing endless joy to generations of children can be a measure on one's life, his was certainly one very well-lived.

QuoteIn addition to inventing toys, Mr. Meyer was an adventurer who flew single-engine planes until he was in his late 80s; rode his bicycle on a 45-day solo trip from San Francisco to Charleston, S.C.; scuba-dived in Fiji and the Solomon Islands; and traveled to the North Pole for a 12-day, 135-mile trek when he was 69.

I'll forever picture him with his long hair, beard, and sunglasses from the Blues Brothers.  Makes me want to watch the movie again!

It seems like Cropper's death should be somewhere under "Disasters in Current Events".  He was only 84. . . .

Voice actors Jeff Garcia and Jim Ward both passed away on December 10th, 2025. Jeff Garcia was 50 and Jim Ward was 66.

Both Garcia and Ward did work for Nickelodeon with Garcia portraying Sheen Estevez in "Jimmy Neutron" and Ward working on "The Fairly Odd-Parents".

Garcia's cause of death is listed as complications from a collapsed lung (he'd been in the hospital multiple times this year for an aneurysm, a stroke and finally pneumonia, which likely caused the collapsed lung.)

Ward's cause of death is listed as complications due to Alzheimer's disease, which he'd been suffering from since 2021.

My favorite character on "Jimmy Neutron" was Sheen, so Jeff Garcia's death is especially sad for me.
