BUT, serious question- For those that are looking and/or have these already.  What are you planning for to have to use these?  Biological?  Radioactive?

Also, I have a full beard, so using a gas mask is not really compatible.
I live next to LAX. Radioactive. I also wish now that I'd have bought those nbc woodland gi suits back when they were practically givng them away.

The idea for preps is to be ready in case of the worst.  If your best/last option comes down to a well-fitting mask that could save your health/life, would you not be willing to trim or shave for that?

Yes, I would.  Just was making comment that it wouldn't work right now as is.

I guess it would also depend on the scenario.  In reality, every prepper should have in the back of their mind that there could be the likely event that they will not make it- No matter the amount and level of preps afforded to them they may have on hand.  If you don't, I think you'd be delusional.

So there's 3357 inbound nukes to blanket your AO...  maybe not a lot to worry about survival wise.  If there's 3, the scenario is still dire but has a much higher glimmer of hope for survival perhaps.

Heck yea, there's always the possibility of not surviving or even not wanting to survive.  Depending on how close those nukes are hitting, I might rather go toward one than away from it, for example.  I just hope my lack of survival at some point isn't the result of faulty preps or failure to make a reasonable attempt.

Failure is the path of least persistence.

Is there a reason you're passing on the Israeli mask? They're widely available, pretty affordable, and generally in good shape...could be a deal breaker if you wear glasses, but I have a small pair that barely fit under mine.

The only time I ever wore mine was when I was dealing with a hornet infestation...but hey, I didn't die...

I was very impressed with the Isreali mask. But iirc, researching this last week, they are hard to find now. Like every other military surplus gas mask. It surprised me. Because the one thing I have always assumed about surplus stores is the plentiful nbc gear. I remember the woodland nbc tops and bottoms. They gave those away. And gas masks were a dime a dozen.

But when I looked last week only the worst quality ones were left in stock. Meaning the worst models. I think budk has the isreali. But reviews were spotty. Some guys got brand new ones. Others got unserviceable ones. And the ad says something like for airsoft only or display purposes only.

And frankly commercial ones look alot more comfortable. And just as effective. Also shooting in them looks alot easier too. Alot of the surplus ones use goggles. And the commercials are one big window. I think I may even be able to wear my glasses under them. Whereas the surplus ones require orescription lenses. And i have no idea where youd get those.

Thus why I started looking at commercial models. And then I got an email from my local surplus store that I posted here. I may try to run by there today. And try those on.

Without military surplus ones in stock your mostly left with Mira brand. If you want full crbn protection. And Mira is ridiculously expensive. Its $200 -$300 for a mask. Thats a hard pass from me. You might find a cheaper Pircel(sp?). But its still like $150 iirc.

I don't have another grand or so left to set my family up with cbrn protection. To many other areas that need to be improved or added to financially. And its hard to justify spending alot on something that is basically going to sit in a bag until it rots. Hopefully. Lol. The alternative is being forced to use them.

But thats not my point. I'm trying to say that there is a sweet spot - for me - where quality/needs match the cost. And Mira is to high end for my own preps spending. Plus I'm moving soon to an area with low nuke risk. So to spend that much doesn't make sense.

I would certainly shave too. In an instant. Of course. I'm not quite that vain. Lol.

But you wouldnt have to shave it completely. At least not my large goatee. Basically you just need the sides of your face and up under your chin shaved. To remain PAWtastically cool. ;)

Fair point; the surplus market has definitely taken a beating lately, and with airsofters/re-enactors buying up surplus, sites have to advertise otherwise protective gear (read: steel helmets, gas masks) as "novelty use only."

Sportsman's Guide has them for under $60.00 though. I just prefer them because the Israelis have a history of taking NBC seriously, but practically. Their .gov guide for making one room in your house into a NBC safe room is really very achievable.

I don't mean to sound like a broken record; like you, I hope that kind of gear is never used. In fact, I remember another thread on the other site, along the lines of "Gear you have, but hope you never use," and I specifically said, "Gas mask." I mean, there's a lot of gear I hope I never have to use, but gas mask has to be top of my list.

If you have to use an NBC suit...well...good luck with that. Generation Kill showed that Marines were basically eating, sleeping and (if need be) shitting in those charcoal-lined monstrosities. My local store is still selling them in plastic wrap, but the prices are insane.

TL;DR. I hope I never need it, I'll be glad I have it if I do, and it didn't cost me an arm or a leg.

I had to use all of it in the Marines. But only for training and field training. Which is kind of why I stray from the Isreali gas masks.

https://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/israeli-military-surplus-adult-gas-mask-new?a=52675

They use googles. And its hard to see with the military ones that have larger eye holes. Let alone these round holes. But I agree they are the best surplus mask you can get now. For sure I will be using Isreali filters.

My only caution with buying from sportsmans guide is they don't list the size. And they come in 3 or 4 different sizes. Other sites sell them by size but they want $160+.

Lastly, I love alot of the stuff SG carries. But I have always hated that membership bs. Wth?! Who charges a membership to an online outdoor store?! Like its some exclusive club. Lmao.

Ya. Thats there way out if it comes to you non functional. Which again, is why I'm considering these knock off chinese commercial ones.

So that after a nuke attack. And they don't work. I can go back and ask for my money back. ;)

So while I understand the desire for an economical path...  for something as critical as this, are the "cheap" versions really worth the risk if your actually going to depend on it for your life?
