Fungus among us

Potentially deadly drug-resistant fungal infections of Candida auris, are spreading heavily in Nevada, California, Texas, and Florida and are spreading to a lesser extent in other states.  While the infection is not yet a major concern, it has the potential to rapidly become a serious widespread health threat.

"The rapid rise and geographic spread of cases is concerning and emphasizes the need for continued surveillance, expanded lab capacity, quicker diagnostic tests, and adherence to proven infection prevention and control," CDC epidemiologist Dr. Meghan Lyman said in a press release.

Additionally, scientists have been raising concerns about a collection of touring mummies that now appear to have fungal growth that can infect people.  It appears that this fungus has not yet been directly tested, but is believed to be Aspergillus.

The three types of fungus of concern that can fatally infect humans are Candida, Aspergilius, and Pneumocystis.  Notably, vaccine research is in the works for all three.

Btw, the fungus in The Last of Us is Ophioordyceps and is terrifyingly real, but can't infect humans at this time.  They are parasitic to arthropods and sometimes other fungus.  Here's hoping it stays that way.
