Note to add: don't cross contaminate dirty containers with clean water an visa versa. My BIL did that once, where he thinks he got some unfiltered water on the lip of the clean water container and paid the price.

The first time my hubs took one of our sons to Philmont (BSUSA Reservation out west) one the adults got it bad from wetting his bandana in a water source and tying it around his head.  The water either ran into his eyes, nose, or mouth with the predictable results.  They had to carry him out to a pick up point that's how weak he was and how fast and hard it hit.

When I was at Philmont we had an adult do the same thing, got sick as a dog. We stayed at camp for 3 days until
He was good enough to hike. We hiked 18 hours that day to make up the lost time. He then had a heart attack and had to be airlifted out.
