I'm trying to figure out if there's any connection with that Russian enlistment center that just got shot up. 

I doubt any direct connection.  But maybe similar misguided motivations. (I say misguided bc any motivation for shooting up a school is, by definition, misguided.  Regardless of who does it or where it happens.)
