He was very clear in interviews that he made the movie about how he thought the future would be.  In more recent interviews, he was surprised his predictions have been coming to fruition as quickly as they have.

I wonder how long he figured it'd take for humanity to basically become a bunch of social media addicted, brainless morons as seen in the film.

I think about this alot living in a third world country. (Phillipines) The starkest distinction I have identified is the difference between countries where the industrial revolution passed them by. Phillipines is one of those. After WWII most all Asian countries were basically agricultural countries. People, dirt and very little industrialization. Let alone technology. China and Vietnam eventually flourished with manufacturing. The Phillipines never progressed.

The depths that industrialization or manufacturing has on a society are huge. But you don't notice it until you leave the US. And begin to observe the day to day life of a people who's generations have never been exposed to what we would see as common principles and tools. 

So many generations of the west (I'm talking average citizens) were exposed to jobs that were industrialized. Each brought home simple principles, processes and tool knowledge. That we largely take for granted.

Simplification, logical processes and speed for example. 

Even when you make a cup of coffee you practice the easiest and fastest route to a cup of coffee. Where the supplies are stored. How easy it is to collect them. The most efficient order to organize them in. The most efficient steps in completing this task. 

That's largely lost on a society who generations have never been exposed to a factory or tools. Few here even have basic hand tools. Let alone know how to use them. Cans are still opened with a knife point. Try to find a pair of pliers in an even middle class neighborhood - good luck. People don't change their oil. Literally that's a thing. 

I was standing in line in a grocery store. Watching people cue up to pay for groceries. The checker, the buyers. The entire process is not organized for efficiency at all. Even on a personal level. Basic hygiene, probably incorporated in our society from the manufacture of food products, is not followed.

The checker slowly scans each item. Slides them onto a western style checkout table. Wet loosely bagged food like chicken leaves a spread of chicken juice. The checker carefully picks it up. And wipes away the juice. But it's with the same rag she's used all day. Full of more chicken juice. 

The buyer stands idly by as the checked food piles up in front of their cart. Someone in the party finally begns placing items in bags or boxes and then in their cart. The checker shows them the total. Only then does the buyer start digging in her purse to find a method of payment. 

Meanwhile this process drags on for a good 5 to 10 minutes. Grocery get slowly bagged and put into the cart. The buyer finally figures out her method of payment. That could have taken anyone else a moment as they would have already retrieved their card from their purse. 

Meanwhile 20 people stand in line patiently. Not getting upset. Having no clue there is a better way to do this. And it takes everyone at least 30 minutes. Just to check out. And drag their salmonella ridden groceries home. 

This is just one example. But it permeates everything.

On the outside everything looks western. Malls with 700 stores bigger and more fancy than anything you've ever seen in the west. With no map to find anything. Hirise condos with beautiful interiors. But no mainentance. Left to eot away and worth half as less 10 years after new. 

But none of it actually functions. It's all dysfunctional to the core. Because no here has ever been exposed to the most basic systems and principles from industrialization, manufacturing and basic business.
