Let this be a thread to discuss anything watch related. Collecting watches. Cool watches. Watches for prepping.

(tirls brought this up in another thread. So thought I would start one. I know we have a watch/knife oic thread. But this should be watches only. Any watch subject you choose.)

I prefer digital watches over analog ones, but that's mostly a matter of convenience for being able to tell the time easily.

Vostok Komanderskie. Paratrooper model for glory of Mother Russia.  Is good watch.  Beelt like T-34 tank.  Deesigned to serwife atomic war.  Battery go dead in decadent western quartz watch - what you do?  Weeth Komandirskie, give few shakes maybe wind and runs like ballerina in Bolshoi.  Is good watch.

Seriously though: as with all mechanical watches, accuracy is measured in seconds per day, rather than seconds per month for a modern quartz watch.  So you'd need a reference timepiece in an extended/permanent SHTF.  If you're trying to coordinate activities with fellow survivors over the short term - say a period of hours or even a few days - that relative lack of accuracy is less important.  Especially if you syncronize your timepieces with members of your group before you split up.

Vostok is a storied Russian military watchmaker.  Like most Russian designs, the emphasis is on robustness, rather than precision.  These Komandirskies are famous for essentially needing no maintence, versus the 5 - 10 year service interval for European and Japanese mechanical watches.  Vostoks basically run until their internal parts literally wear out.  And even then, I wouldn't be surprised if they kept going out of sheer Slavic stubborness.

Girl watching.   :w000t:

Okay, I'll be serious.  So, am I the only one here that has one watch just for standard time and a different one (same model, different color) for DST?

I've never thought to do that, but I may do so moving forward.

I do it because this watch is a PITA to set.  The hands only go clockwise, so to set it back an hour I have to set it ahead 11 hours.  Since it's a cheap watch I have one in tan (my DST watch) and one in olive (my standard time watch) and one in silver and black that's my travel "dress" watch and which probably needs a battery now.

All my watches are the digital kind, so setting them isn't too hard for me.

Only analog watch I have is a Seiko Automatic, but I never wear it. I've actually been thinking of selling it, but the crystal is a bit scratched and most folks out here want the higher end stuff.

So like the AK47 of watches? Cool.

So if my watch is self winding can I also manually wind it? It will turn before pulling the knob out to change the time. If I turn it without pulling it out is that winding it?

Nah, I love watches, but I can't really afford anything nicer than a Seiko.  My idea of a luxury watch would be something like a Tissot or a new Hamilton.  I have three Seiko automatics, two of which are the most valuable pieces in my collection.  Unless you count my vintage Hamilton.  Not really sure how much that one's worth but probably not more than a few hundred dollars.  Just curious, but what Seiko do you have?

I'm not entirely sure the exact model, but it's similar to the silver one in the middle, Majorhavoc.

I'll have to look for it and when I find it, I'll post a pic of it.

It's kind of hard to see, but the numbers on the back are 2D3511.

That's the serial number.  I'm trying to make out the model number down on the line with "Water Resistant"

Value is around $80-$100 depending on condition.  There's one on Etsy for $79

Another on eBay for $32

Given the condition of my watch, I'd probably put it closer to the 80 dollar value.

Which isn't bad for a watch I paid pretty much nothing for.

Want me to give it a cleaning and buff that crystal?  Make it wearable again?

That'd be awesome.

I'll pop it in the mail as soon as I can.

Nt2c- Thank you so much for the fresnel lenses!!! That was super cool of you. I was honestly sceptical of how well they would work. Man! They can really light something on fire!

Thank you again.
