There was also a M6.4 quake about 3.5 hours later southeast of the Loyalty Islands.  (Between Fiji and New Caledonia)

I don't know that plate tectonics works quite the same as a noggin, but it almost looks a little like a coup-contrecoup injury to me.  I doubt that's useful information anyway, but I thought it was interesting.

I visualize plate tectonics as sort of like the slag that forms on top of molten lead when you're casting fishing weights.  As the slag gets moved around you can see it grind against other bits of slag.

That seems like a reasonably accurate comparison, and I'm not really sure I like how I feel about that.

And it turns out, research has shown that larger earthquakes can cause quakes on the opposite side of the globe (near its antipode). Earthquakes can systematically trigger other ones on opposite side of Earth -- ScienceDaily

That being said, that 6.4 is a good distance away from that, so I can't say it's related at all.

I don't know if it's going to be useful information, but it's kind of cool to see where you'd end up if you ever tried to dig a hole to China as a kid.  :awesome:
