News is coming in about my area storm.. threat (done)... wind damage (small numbrs of random severe damage. Could have been much worse).. power outages (at this posting, scattered, 180,000±).. smoke (3 lrg grass fires westrn Kansas began, may have merged?  Maybe 3 towns evacuated ahead of smoke? fire?).. dust storm in western Kansas (done, almost zero visibility 90mph wind n some places for awhile. AQI right now- bad)... earthquakes (4 Saline county)

I live about 20 minutes north of Kansas City, and we got a lot of wind, but nothing really bad. However, that Russell County fire in Kansas, which is roughly 4 hours from me, is burning bad enough to have an extremely strong smoke smell in our neighborhood, and the smoke is noticeable in the porch light of our home. No power loss or other issues though, so we came out pretty good so far I'd say...

This (large) apartment building was having multiple calls to security from tenants reporting smoke in the building.

I had my small air cleaners on high for maybe three, four hours to help keep it down. With the wind way down and direction not straight at us right now, that one dense smoke area on the weather report may be skirting us for the time being.

About how fast would y'all say those winds were?  The highest I rode the scooter in was around 35-40, and that was highly entertaining.

What I heard was 60 to 100.
After the Thunderstorm passed ( I'm hearing now that it was a derecho)  The wind was still howling. My wife and I decided to run to town and just get burgers from Mc Donalds. Driving down the wind was from rear quarter and not too terribly bad. When we got to the drive through they had just got power back on and told us it would be awhile to reboot their systems. It was half an hour. Got our food, I'm starving and start eating my free upgraded large fries while driving home. The drive home with a front quartering wind direction with gusts to 60 was a whole different animal as I was fighting the steering wheel the whole way while clutching my bag of quickly turned squish fries

Oh, and btw. My home weather station did not survive this storm. The pole it was mounted on snapped at ground level and the station is in pieces

Kitts & I survived just fine.  Power here was out for about 2.5 hrs tops.  So far, the twisters are classified as EF0's  It was a good exercise for me.  I don't think the Kitts noticed anything.

My core preps easily held up, but the landline is out, DSL is crawling.  The tablet from the VA is how I'm getting around online.  I id have to reset my YT Music app.  Again.  I'm getting tired of that.

After the Derecho last year (2020), no one here was taking any chances but it wasn't near as bad here (Capital Area) in DSM.

Woods, check in.

I've reached out to Woods via alternate means. I'll let you know if I hear anything before he gets back in here himself.

He's probably one of the more capable and prepared people we know, so it would likely take a pretty direct hit to seriously affect him.

Looking after family during the holidays is probably a bigger challenge for him right now.
