On one hand, I want to say it's sad to see our old veterans passing, but the man has earned his rest.

Yahoo Entertainment - Sidney Poitier, Pioneering Oscar-Winning Actor and Director, Dies at 94 (https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/sidney-poitier-pioneering-oscar-winning-152915371.html)

Sidney Poitier, the pioneering actor and director who became the first bankable Black leading man in Hollywood, has died at age 94, according to the Bahamian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Poitier, who was born in the U.S. but grew up in the Bahamas, broke multiple racial barriers in his decades-long career, including when he became the first Black actor to win the Academy Award, for his role in 1963's "Lilies of the Field."

Age 65.  I didn't know he was quite that old but then again, that's way too young.

We survive the indiscretions of our youth, only to live long enough to see our childhood slowly die with the passing of the entertainers we grew up with.

RIP little hero.  One of the charities I donate to is the mine sniffing rats.  I have currently "adopted" one named Ronin.  Magawa's spirit lives on in the band of rats who follow in his footsteps.

ETA: The APOPO link (https://www.apopo.org/en) in case anybody would like to donate to the program in Magawa's honor.

It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Navy veteran and renowned artist Dick Kramer. Through his exceptional talent he traveled the world, met presidents, and honored those who serve by making them the focus of his keen eye and illustrious career.

Occasionally, he took a break from his serious work to create lighthearted cartoons for The Armory Life. Today, the whole Springfield family mourns the loss of a loyal friend, devoted father, loving husband and a true patriot.

New York Post - Original 'Godzilla' star Akira Takarada dead at 87 (https://nypost.com/2022/03/18/original-1954-godzilla-star-akira-takarada-dead-at-87/)

Akira Takarada, a Japanese actor and voiceover artist best known for appearing in the original 1954 "Godzilla," died Monday at age 87. His passing was confirmed by Toho studios, which produced the original monster flick. "We are saddened to hear of the passing of Akira Takarada," they wrote in a Thursday tweet. "May his memory continue to inspire the lives of many Godzilla fans."

Born on April 29, 1934, Takarada is most famous for playing sailor Hideto Ogata in the original 1954 film "Godzilla." His character liaised with the Japanese Coast Guard after the first ship that Godzilla destroyed issued a distress signal, and witnessed the monster's death from the Oxygen Destroyer at the end of the film.

From there, Takarada went on to star in a slew of flicks featuring the King of the Monsters, including "Mothra vs Godzilla" (1964) and "Godzilla vs Mothra" (1992). The actor's last appearance in a Godzilla flick was in "Godzilla: Final Wars" (2004), although he filmed scenes for the 2014 US reboot "Godzilla," which unfortunately didn't make the final cut. However, he is still featured in the movie's credits.

Along with his work on the Godzilla franchise, Takarada appeared in other atomic age monster mashes from "Invasion of the Astro-Monster" (1965) to "Ebirah, Horror of the Deep" (1966) and Toho's "King Kong Escapes" (1967).

After my mom died when I was a kid, I spent a lot of time on the road with my Army dad.  I was fascinated with truck convoys (both civilian and military) and that was my favorite song for a long time.  I even wanted to be a trucker when I grew up due in part to that song.

Also, fuck cancer.

My dad was briefly a trucker (briefly as in he was only a trucker for like a couple months before he quit) when I was a kid, but he still kept a CB radio in every vehicle he drove.

I knew of the "Convoy" song thanks to my dad and later because of the GTA series of video games.

Hollywood Reporter - Colin Cantwell, Concept Artist Who Designed Iconic 'Star Wars' Spacecraft, Dies at 90 (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/colin-cantwell-dead-star-wars-spacecraft-concept-artist-1235152043/)

Cantwell's film credits included special photographic effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), technical dialogue for Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and computer graphics design for WarGames (1983). Yet he was most renowned for his work with George Lucas on Star Wars, designing and constructing the prototypes for the X-wing, TIE fighter, Star Destroyer and the Death Star, among others.

Before he made his way to Hollywood, Cantwell had already had an extraordinary career. During the historic '60s space race between the U.S. and Russia, he worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA, creating educational programs for the public to better understand the flights.

That work culminated in Cantwell being a resource for the legendary Walter Cronkite during his historic moon landing broadcast in 1969. It was Cantwell who was on the communications line between NASA and the astronauts getting updates that he fed to the newsman, who in return broadcast that information to the world on live TV.

It was Cantwell's work on WarGames — programming the Hewlett Packard monitors to depict the dramatic bomb scenes on NORAD screens as the WOPR (War Operation Plan Response) computer nearly launched nuclear weapons — that led him to programming software that took the actual Hewlett Packard from just a few colors to 5,000.

You may well be right.  Choco Tacos always were a kind of "web denizen" treat.  This could well become viral.  Let me see what I can do to help...

With the passing of Nichelle Nichols, that leaves just Walter Koenig (Chekov), George Takei (Sulu) and William Shatner (Kirk) left of the main cast of the original series.

London Bridge has fallen.

https://nypost.com/2022/09/08/operation-london-bridge-what-happens-after-queen-elizabeths-death/

The Queen is dead, long live King Chuck III (or whatever reginal name he chooses).

They have been planning for this for decades.

QuoteBecause the queen died in Balmoral, the plan states her body will initially lie at rest in her smallest palace, Holyroodhouse, in Edinburgh, according to The Guardian.
The coffin will then be carried up the Royal Mile to St Giles's cathedral for a reception before being put on board the Royal Train at Waverley station. Crowds of mourners are expected to gather at stations along the journey down the east coast mainline to throw flowers on the passing train.
Eventually, the beloved monarch's body will arrive at the throne room in Buckingham Palace — with an altar, the pall, the royal standard, and four Grenadier Guards standing watch, the Guardian said.
On the fifth day, a procession through London will take her coffin from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster, with a service at Westminster Hall following its arrival.
The Queen will lie in state there for three days, with her coffin on a raised box in the middle of Westminster Hall, open to the public for 23 hours a day, if the plan detailed by Politico still stands.

DailyWire - Veteran CNN Anchor Bernard Shaw Dies At 82 (https://www.dailywire.com/news/veteran-cnn-anchor-bernard-shaw-dies-at-82?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=dwbrand)

"CNN's beloved anchor and colleague, Bernard Shaw, passed away yesterday at the age of 82. Bernie was a CNN original and was our Washington Anchor when we launched on June 1st, 1980," Chris Licht, CNN chairman and CEO, said in a statement.

"He was our lead anchor for the next twenty years from anchoring coverage of presidential elections to his iconic coverage of the First Gulf War live from Baghdad in 1991. Even after he left CNN, Bernie remained a close member of our CNN family providing our viewers with context about historic events as recently as last year. The condolences of all of us at CNN go out to his wife Linda and his children," he added.

Shaw covered some of the world's top news stories over the past 40 years, including time reporting from a hotel room in Iraq at the beginning of Operation Desert Storm in 1991. As the co-anchor of "Prime News," Shaw covered events such as the assassination attempt of President Ronald Reagan in 1981, the Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989, and the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

Shaw served as a U.S. Marine for four years, worked at CBS as a political reporter from 1971-1977, and worked at ABC News from 1977 to 1979 before his decades-long role at CNN.

This one hit me kind of hard.  I knew her best for her role on Star Trek: Deep Space 9, where, like in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, she played, maybe not a villain, but definitely an antagonist.  She gave the character so much life and depth that while it was soooo easy to hate her, there were times you could just about sympathize with her.  But oh, she was so, so good at being so very bad.

And what's really incredible about that is that the show ran for 7 seasons, 173 episodes, and she was in 14 of them.  That's all she needed to be one of the most hated characters in all of the series.  (And before I looked it up, I would have sworn she was in more than just 14 episodes...she just had that much impact, I guess.)

I figure Jerry Lee Lewis is like the country/rockabilly music version of Keith Richards.

By which I mean both of them died a long time ago, but there's so much drugs in their systems that their brains haven't gotten the message yet.

People - Jeff Cook, Co-Founder of Country Supergroup Alabama, Dead at 73 After 10-Year Parkinsons Battle (https://people.com/country/jeff-cook-of-alabama-dead-age-73-parkinsons-disease/)

Born in Fort Payne, Alabama on Aug. 27, 1949, Cook started playing guitar and keyboards as a young teenager before working as a local radio DJ and later owning radio and TV stations — all before graduating high school.

Cook and two of his cousins, guitarist Randy Owen and bassist Teddy Gentry, formed a band in the late '60s before officially co-founding Alabama a decade later. They released three albums in the '70s — Wild Country, Deuces Wild and Alabama Band No. 3 — that largely flew under the radar before signing to RCA Records to craft their major label debut, 1980's My Home's in Alabama.

Over the course of their career, the band notched 36 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart including 1982's "Mountain Music," 1983's "Dixieland Delight," 1988's "Song of the South," 1990's "Jukebox in My Mind" and 1992's "I'm in a Hurry (And Don't Know Why)," among others.

For anyone who is interested in cryptozoology, they likely know who Linda Godfrey is.  In short, she's one of the best known writers and researchers in that field, with almost 20 books to her credit and innumerable television show, podcast, and speaking appearances.  Linda passed today from Parkinson's at the age of 71.

I'm right in the middle of writing a book for NaNoWriMo that is bigfoot-themed, so hearing this news today caught me off guard.  I hope that you've finally found some answers Linda.  :'(

I wasn't sure where exactly to post this, but I've noticed that since the 15th of this month, 20 members of the Chinese Academies of Engineering and Science have passed away.

They ranged in age from 77 to 102 and they've all died in Bejing within days of one another.

It may just be a massive coincidence, but it strikes me as a bit odd.

Italian movie director Ruggero Deodato, best known for his film "Cannibal Holocaust" that earned him an arrest in Italy on suspicion of murder, died December 29th at the age of 83.

The murder charge was eventually dropped after Deodato brought in the actors from the movie to prove they were still alive and he revealed to the court how he achieved the effects for the movie.

Deodato later appeared in Eli Roth's film "Hostel 2" in a cameo as a cannibal.
