105 F here in magical NE Kansas. It's so hot the flying monkeys are just using their wings as fans :shades:
99F officially with a heat index of 112F ('cause it's fockin' huuuuuuumid).
We're sifting compost on a shower curtain in the laundry room instead of out on the porch.
The Detroit area has been warm, but not really out of the ordinary. The highest that I've seen in the last few weeks was around 92F, which is nowhere near being a record. Right now it's 86F here, but with the 76% humidity, it feels like about 98F.
ETA: I looked it up and the average high for July 28th is 83.4F and the record is 100F.
Oh yea. Heat index is 111
80 and overcast, will definitely rain. 92% humidity so the 'feels like' is 87 according to "myRadar". that will drop when it starts raining.
It's 91F in my AO.
Temps have been hovering around 98F for the past week and are supposed to be getting up to about 100 next week.
Heat index in the mid 90s here in Maine. But that's not unheard of this time of year. I've been feeling a bit guilty lately because my state has avoided most of the extreme heat and Canadian wildfire smoke much of the nation (and in the case of heat, south and Central Europe) has been dealing with.
What is unusual, however, is overnight temperatures. It just doesn't cool down at night like it used to.
That and tornadoes. We got another one in New Hampshire yesterday. Tornadoes just aren't supposed to happen in northern New England. I'm pretty sure that's listed in the Book of Genesis as one of the Seven Seals of the Apocalypse.
So, we are not having a heatwave here in Ireland. It's been raining and raining and raining ☔️
It was warmer today at 20C but it was only 13C on Tuesday, the weather has been abysmal :-\
61F where I live. Kinda humid but overall pretty nice.
@wee drop o bush &
@Optimist, those temps sound good to me! I've considered moving up to the northern part of Michigan to get lower temps, but that also adds a lot of lake effect snow. Temp has topped out today around 88F, but the humidity has dropped to about 60%, which means that the heat index has actually dropped down to 95F from earlier.
Some rain is in the forecast and the temps are supposed to be a little nicer for the next week (highs in the 70s to very low 80s).
Right now it's 90°F with real feel of 103°F
That's 50 degrees too hot for me
97, feels like 95 according to the weather dorks in their air-conditioned office, not out here in a damn tin box.
Mid 80s for high.
Much wetter and cooler than last year. Not even in a fire restriction yet I don't think.
75 and rainy in MA.
It's been in the 80s and savagely humid for most of July.
I'm OK with that after June, which was a total washout.
It's 58F here at 9am with 83% humidity, with a forecasted high of 66F :-\
I'm not wanting a heatwave, but warm sunny weather would make a nice change from rain ☔️
It's only 85F today. Looks like the rest of the week will be about the same. Much better that it was Friday.
Here's something interesting. :rolleyes1: Just got my electric bill and I used the exact same KW per day this billing cycle as last years billing cycle. In my AO, the AC is the main pull in summer [fall, winter and spring also], so it must have run the same amount this year as last year.
Not hotter in July here in SE FL. We're keeping the status quo against the flow.
My electric bill was $37 higher though, cost of energy increases as seen in real life. This month's electric bill total is almost a record high for me in this house, The record amount was back when I had my old A/C. But this bill is the highest since I got my new A/C back in 2017. Wait 'til August's comes in, that's our hottest month here.
FYI: My real measure of temps averages in my AO is thru my pool's temp. Its effected by air temp, rain, and clouds. 6 or 7 years ago it got up to 97 degrees for a short time in August. That's my all time high. I think we were in a sort of drought back then also, so less rain less clouds. We're getting our regular amount of rain here this year. So I don't think I'll be setting a new record this year. We'll see though.

I noticed my July bill this year was exactly one kilowatt hour more than the same bill last year, but was significantly more expensive. I'm thoroughly annoyed by that, especially the part where our power company is charging customers directly for their improvement projects. Pay for your own improvement projects! That's what reinvesting your profits are all about. Criminy.
This was me doing my yardwork on Saturday and then cutting down some overhanging branches and dragging them out to the road on Sunday.

Had to stop in the middle of tree trimming because the pole chainsaw I was using has a plastic lever that holds the pole extension fast [but not tight]. So the plastic lever broke and I had to do a quick fix, replacing that lever with the thing that holds the hand bar on an old weed wacker [a wingnut. Now it holds tight and won't break]. Hate having to fix tools in the middle of a job. Curses on the designers/engineers that never use these tools and think that parts subject to heat, sunlight, and shearing forces should be made out of cheap plastic. Eff you knowitalls. :smiley_thefinger:
August is the hottest part of the year here. My pool temp was 89 degrees.
Projected forecast here in Hell, I mean the Permian Basin, is supposed to be up around 109 all freaking week. :gonk:
Warmed up to high 70s for a few days but now its back down to 60s and raining.
We've had a cooling period last few days

Mid 70s now and then into the 50s overnight.
We opened all the windows yesterday after dinner to listen to a pretty good thunderstorm. Very pleasantly cool as I heaved my guts out at 1 AM!

I'm trying to, Wee Drop. I'm hoping we'll get some rain and it'll cool things down soon.
106 yesterday across most of Texas as I drove I-20 from Odessa to Longview.
So i had hoped we would gracefully slide into cooler fall weather. And it was nice since I last posted. But the forecast is for 112 F today. And doesn't have a daytime temp below 105 till next weekend. :smiley_devil:
ETA It's hit 113. My home weather station is showing 114-115. ( it's in full sunlight). One of the outside cats had a kitten five days ago. They are on the front porch and I put up a tarp to shield them from the afternoon sun
The temperature here has been in the high 90's all month. That is unpleasant. However what has been bad is the lack of rain. We have not had the usual pm thunderstorms. As a result there is a lot of heat stressed foliage.
It has been hard on the animals as well. I went into a local feed store yesterday and there was a 2 day old calf inside the store. It was lying in the flor panting from the heat. The store owner brought it inside to cool it off in an attempt to save it.
My pond is down a good 2 feet. The turtles are not as active during the day. Almost all of the critters are laying low in the daytime and moving only at night.
There is also a burn ban statewide. We have had several fires. A dry hot pine forest will catch fire if you look at wrong much less set a fire.
This too though shall pass. The saving grace of this is that the high pressure area causing this is blocking the low pressure depressions in the GOM. This makes hurricanes 🌀 difficult to organize.
Very hot here today in the Detroit area. It topped out in the lower 90s, but it was also very humid and the heat index topped out around 106F.
We had some big storms that went through Thursday night / Friday morning. And we just had another really powerful storm system blow through this evening, including a number of tornadoes. I had 60-70mph wind at my house, along with torrential rain, and non-stop lightning / thunder. Since there were tornadoes in the area, I went down in the basement and read for a while.
A friend called and we chatted for a while. He found a YouTube channel called Max Velocity - Severe Weather Center (https://www.youtube.com/@MaxVelocityWX) who has been doing live analysis of the storm system as it went through Michigan into Canada and now into Pennsylvania / New York. I subscribed to his channel, since I could definitely see this being useful in the future. I'm not sure where all he covers when there are storms, but it might be worth taking a look at.
That same storm came thru my area overnight, power went out for about 2 minutes. Could hear the wind, not as much rain as other places. Woke up this morning to a 4" diameter branch across my driveway. Thought about just driving over it, but water meter is being changed today and figured the technician wouldn't want to deal with it. Supposed to go up to 85°F today.
Been in the high 90's in Denver for several days Last night Texas sent the tropical storm out way cooled it off into the 70's. Expected 1-1.5" of rain which we need but not all at once.
This is the first time I can remember being thankful for any thing that came from Texas.
In North Texas, it's 110 in the country.
The DFW cities appear to be even hotter.
It's 96 right now. But the end is nigh

Had a few cold nights, but the next four days are going to be high 70s. Ah, New England.

Not sure how to ring it in... cider on the stovetop, or mead.

I saw 76F here today, although it might've gotten a bit higher as I didn't check it until this evening. From here, it looks like the temps fall off dramatically. Right now the expected high for Halloween is 41F!

Sounds like an average day in Texas.
In the morning it's winter, afternoon it's summer, evening it's a mix of spring and fall.
Occasionally you'll get a mid-day rain shower with the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky, but those days are pretty rare nowadays.
It's snowing. About 28 degrees. Wind chill about 25. Not much breeze blowing. Up to 6 inches expected by midnight

We've had cold weather for about a week. Not cold for everywhere else. Just cold for here. Down around 40f at night. Which feels like below freezing if you've lived in the 60s and 70s all year.
The cool part is you get to haul out your jackets and warm clothes for once. Lol.
Brought my dogs in several nights. Even though I know they don't care. As they're outside enough that they grow decent enough coats. And have crates that are rain proof. And well under our patio. Plus they have thick fake wool beds. And more than enough fleece blankets. Nice to have them in tho. The youngest is grown up enough not to get in the garbage or cause mayhem. Usually we have to keep them in our bedroom. So they can't roam the house. But now they can he trusted anywhere.
I've worn a lightweight jacket for a total of 2 days last DEC. Almost put one on this morning but said effit. It was only 61 when I left for work, but wet and rainy.
Headed to zero F here.
Currently it's just above freezing, but it's been snowing for the past three hours or so (since around 3pm). I went out for pizza at 5pm (there was about 1/2 - 3/4 inch of snow at that point) and almost immediately saw someone who'd overcooked it and smacked the curb. They'd ended up off the road in someone's driveway, but with one wheel torn off, along with damage to the fender and bumper, the car was going to have to wait for a tow truck.
It's Michigan people. It snows here and you should be used to it... :rolleyes1:
-5 F this am.
4 DEGREES right now. this the first time since last Thursday it got above 0. In fact I think it's the first above -10
-4 as of noon. Saturday night we had a wind chill of -32. Sucks to work out in that's for sure.
60F and half cloudy. But suns out.
Sorry. Lmao!!!

And tonight our CERT went to get Skywarn training (https://www.weather.gov/SKYWARN). A few people in our group had been through it before, but it was new for me. Not a whole lot to it, just some basic "this is what we want to hear about and this is what we don't" followed by various ways to get in touch with the local office.

I got 17" outside right now and 24 hours left, kind of awesome. The Californians COLORADO NATIVES are either melting down or telling people that NOAA travel warnings are bogus and they should just drive their Miata with bald tires to work, no in-betweens.

"Gorilla Hail". That's a new one for me. But I'm sure the news media loves it for their continuous efforts to overdramatize weather in order to boost ratings/mouse clicks/ad revenue.
Myself, I no longer pay attention to any weather forecast unless it involves a polar votex redirecting an atmospheric river to deliver a bomb cyclone over my area with Gorilla Hail as a prelude to snowmageddon. That way I'll know when to put the top up on my bald-tired Miata before heading over that mountain pass. I mean, I wouldn't want my Hawaiian shirt and flip flops to get wet.

Who comes up with this stuff? Anyone else miss the days when we'd just compare hail to fruit and be done with it?

National Weather Service Skywarn Spotters are required to report hail size as it relates to United States currency. As a trained, Advanced Skywarn Spotter with more than a decade of experience I,m going to say that I'd have to report that as "tree-fiddy size hail".

Gotta keep your shrooms dry too, here in Colorful Colorado. It's (edit: legally) fulla something alright.
People in Cali Rock are dangerous to be on the road with, period. The weather isn't the problem. It's them. I had the same woman talking on her phone try to merge into me TWICE last week.
She wasn't in a Miata. She was in a Lexus.
We seem to be accumulating again, we might actually get over two feet. Work truck got stuck
real good trying to climb a hill in our neighborhood earlier today... I think it might still be out there lol... I'm sure the main roads down in town will be fine by dinner tomorrow. But so what, we ain't got nowhere to go anyhow.
On the plus side I might go snowshoe for a while after the kids are asleep, there's a trail up the road a ways.
Got up to 90 degrees yesterday afternoon. Forecast the same for today. Hot and windy
Heat index here tomorrow is expected to be 112F. I am not leaving the house.
99 deg f several days in a row. I love my swamp cooler.
Past week it has been in high 80s, low 90s with miserable humidity.
It's been in the low 90s here this week and very humid. A friend is moving into an apartment on Monday and he said that the first thing he's buying after getting moved in is a window air conditioner unit! I'm looking forward to later this week after the predicted mid-week storm system blows through, as the highs are supposed to drop down to around 78-80F at that point.
Weather 2024-08-03 101939.png
A couple hours ago, it was 82F with 93% humidity outside. Right now, it is showing 69F and 96% humidity outside. Wind speed goes up to 1mph and back to 0.
Glendale, AZ. It was 115F today when I did my shopping (instantly regretted it). Even with the AC running, it was 81F inside my apartment most of the day. Overnight lows this summer have rarely dipped under 90F, which is nuts considering it was regularly in the 70s overnight when I was a kid in Phoenix in the 90s.
Southern MS/LA is always hot in August. This year is no exception. However unlike last year there is no drought and the PM showers are keeping things muggy but in the low 90's and not the 100's like last year.
It's weirdly nice out here. Mid/lated August, but not even into the 80s when we would typically be in the 100s. This is so darn weird. It's like we had August in June and now August is September/October.
Anyway, was able to get some yard work done without much risk of passing out (if I get hot enough to sweat, my body has a vasovagal response and I pass out; on doc's orders, I'm not allowed outside in the summer).
It's been around 70F here the last few days, which is just fine with me! The temps are supposed to go back up into the upper 80s this weekend and into early next week, but at least for right now it's very pleasant.
We are are having a weirdly mild run this week, no storms or rain predicted. Temps for the week is a high of 88 , but the few days before that are mid 70's. I can't remember an August that had around a week this mild.
Meanwhile in my part of Texas, it's pushing 100 plus. Today it's around 100F, but tomorrow and Thursday it's supposed to be 104F.
So I'll be doing the bare minimum outdoors then and staying in the AC until Friday.

It works pretty good. Kind of struggles a little, but it's probably used to Virigina heat and not Seventh Level of Hell heat like out here.
62 deg F as of 10:00pm here in southern Maine. Temps supposed to get down to the low 50s overnight. More than a whiff of fall in the air. Delightful sleeping weather. :greenguy:
Fortunately, the temps have dropped a bit here and are now around 69F. Of course, the reason they dropped is that a fairly powerful squall line went through early this evening, including 70mph straight line winds.
And why is it "fortunate" that the temps dropped? Well, that would be due to the 200k people who have lost power as a result of the storm... Mine is half-off right now, with just one leg working and thus only one side of my panel. Since the furnace/blower is on one side (the one with power) and the a/c is on the other (no power), there's no way to have the air working when the power is half-out like this.
Because it's an older house, there's not much rhyme or reason to what has power and what doesn't with an outage like this. Most (but not all) of the outlets on the first floor are working, while most (but not all) of the lights were out. On the 2nd floor it's reversed, with all of the lights working, but only one outlet! Fortunately, the one working outlet is in my office, so I've got an extension cord running over to my computer and to the router / modem. The clock, fan, and BT speaker in my bedroom are all without power right now, but I might just plug those into one of my power stations to keep them running overnight.
Oh, and of course, both the fridge and the chest freezer were on outlets which lost power. Fortunately, both of them were near other outlets that were working, so I just put them each on an extension cord to keep them running. They're both Energy Star appliances, which means there's no issue with having them on an extension cord, as they hardly pull any power.
I'm okay with 69-70F, which isn't bad at all. I'll probably still run a fan tonight though, since the humidity is quite high as a result of all the rain (don't really want to open the window and let that humidity inside). And the 2nd floor (where my bedroom is) is still in the upper-70s due to the outdoor temps being in the mid-90s earlier today. *ick*
At least the cold shower this evening felt great!

High was 77 mostly sunny with a light breeze.
Currently 66, high today was 75, still 10 degrees warmer than is comfortable.
Need that ice age to come around again
Currently 53 degrees, but it is expected to get as high as 80 today.
I guess you know you're a Floridian when you go outside at 1pm and its full Florida sun out and you think it feels cool out today. When you get in your car the thermometer says 92, but you think 'at least its not 97' and must be low humidity for it to feel so mild out.
Run to the bank and HomeDepot with your windows down and check your weather app to see why it feels so nice, and then realize its saying its 67% humidity and feels like 98 degrees.
Hope its nice like this tomorrow when I'm doing the yard.

I was ROTFL when Ireland had that heat advisory a few weeks ago and said it would have daily highs of 78 and folks should shelter in place and hydrate. :rolleyes1: It doesn't get down to daily highs of <78 here until November.

46℉ this morning. :smiley_freezing:
And we have a solid 6.7℉ at UFoZS HQ this morning. Yayyy us!
I think it was -4F last night, and got up to 29F this afternoon.
Finally gave in and turned on the heat at the new place. It was 58F inside and 34F outside yesterday. Last place was hot as hell in the summer, but never got below 71F indoors in winter. Only time I turned on the heat was when my aunt complained.

We turned on our heat for the first time in a year a couple of weeks ago. It's electric and uses heating coils which get covered in dust running the a/c, so its good to run the heat at least for a couple of minutes once a year to burn the dust off the coils. If it gets below 65 in the house we have an opportunity window to do that [don't always do it]. But has to be cold two days in a row as the house retains heat for the first day of cold weather.
This morning and tomorrow morning its supposed to get down into the high 40's.
35 degrees warmer this morning... My thermometer showed 25 when I left.

The BMW looks like it had a really bad case of acne thanks to the hail. The dings are hard to see in photos but they're spaced about 10-12" apart on the roof, hood, and trunk. A whole bunch of roofers are rolling thru the neighborhood like vultures.

I keep a couple of moving pads in the back of the Jeep to be used as hail protection on the glass roof and the hood. For the windshield I have a type of cover used for snow and that will help with hail too.
@NT2C How would you anchor them? when we get hail in florida its usually really windy and until the pad gets soaking wet or even after it is it could blow off. This was the largest hail I've ever seen here and I've lived in florida my whole life. Wet towels maybe also, being wet maybe they don't blow off? not sure how much wind it would take to blow them off. Some of those moving blankets these days are nylon and don't absorb water fast, cotton ones would.
I was also thinking, put carboard sheets [I have big sheets I save to put down on the ground when working on my cars] on the roof, trunk and hood, and then hold them down by either a blue tarp bungeed or I have a car cover, but its for the Monte Carlo, and that'd have to be bungeed also. Tarp has bungee grommet holes.
It's just that we had no hail warning and so once it started it would have been dangerous to go out in it to cover the car during the storm. So you kind of have to know in advance to armor up, any hail that's not dangerous to people won't hurt the cars. That's the kind we normally get, on the rare occasion that we get it in my AO.
I'm torn between calling my insurance or buying a PDR kit.
On the Jeep I just toss them on and hook a elastic cargo net to the roof rails. You could try closing doors on the ends or corners.
80f yesterday and today . Low 70df next few days

Wow, insurance adj advised $7k-8000 in damage to the BMW, the car is only worth ~$3500. So Totaled in their eyes. So we closed the claim. There was another option to have them pay us the Totaled value and we keep the car with a 'salvage title'. I'm not sure if that's a good option. Looks I'm going to become a PDR expert shortly. Fully tooled up. :rolleyes1:

I'm in the Phillipines for two months. Possibly forever. It's hot as balls and humid as (blank)! Lol. But it's also the rainy season. So every other day or so a storm rolls thru. It rains and blows and things cool off a bit. Still hot as balls. But a nice respite.

97⁰F here and expecting triple digits shortly. Our upstairs heat pump is busted and awaiting parts, so it's as hot up there as it is outside and our downstairs unit can't reach setpoint under these conditions, so we're sitting at 77⁰F-80⁰F inside.

I have been informed by both my cardiac rehab nurse and local PD (2 doors down from me) that if I get too hot and it is impacting my health, to feel free to come to the hospital (per my nurse) and I can hang out/sleep there, OR I can walk over to the police station and hang out/sleep there. I only keep the AC under 78 on weekends and at night. Try an old trick... put awnings on your windows to shade them from the mid-day heat. That should reduce the temps quite a bit.
Do you have an attic fan? Is it working? Is it sized correctly?

I wish I could do those things, but alas I rent. Changed apartments at the end of last year to a safer location closer to work. Management is great, but I can't do those kinds of modifications to my own unit. If it was my own place, I'd want cross ventilation and at least basic insulation for the attic and thermal tinting for the windows. I loved the last place we had in Phoenix because it had a big back porch that covered the entire living area and shielded it from the sun year round. Meanwhile my parents' place has big trees shielding most of the house from direct sun.
Is there a tenants association? If so, suggest it through them as a way to reduce HVAC maintenance costs.

Dude. This so reminds me of living in hot as desert eastern Washington state! The biggest business in town was the Alcoa aluminum factory. My Dad worked there. And employees got to buy industrial use huge rolls of aluminum foil. That I swear was like 2 mil! Or whatever a thick mil is. I forget. And everyone covered their windows with it in summer time. It was the best sun block. We of course had to run ac constantly. But that solid aluminum foil held out so much heat!
I brought this up to my then socal raised upper crust wife. And she was appalled at the idea of covering our bedroom windows with foil! Lmao!
But that foil insulation must work well. Cause even plain old aluminum foil does a great job at blocking heat and sunlight!

A window 6,000 BTU unit typically will use 300 to 500 watts where as running a central unit will use easily 4,800 watts so you should in theory save power if you turned the HVAC up to keep the other rooms @ ~ 82F. But remember that the central AC will also have to run longer to bring the rest of the house back down to 78F when you turn it on. This will reduce the power you save.
One thing to check is the air flow, check and replace the air filter regularly. Do not use a high MERV 1" filter unless you replace it very often. The restricted airflow will reduce efficiency a lot. Also have the units inside and out cleaned at least once a year. The crud on the heat exchangers can also use a lot of power.
It was 96F here today, but i stayed inside where there was a/c!
Denver is dry enough that evaporative coolers work wonders. It can be in the 90s f. But in the high 60s f. In the house.
At my place it's currently 80F and ... 92% humidity... :eek1:

Ewww...
I worked on the farm today removing a fallen rotted pine tree. I had to make 6 chainsaw cuts. I did this between 9 and 10:30 am.
I experienced heat exhaustion. Red face, inability to catch my breath and dizziness. Fortunately I had cool water and poured it on my head and made it into the air conditioned house. I was able to take cool shower. Even the cold water is about 80f.
I then sat down under a ceiling fan until my face and breathing returned to normal. I called it a day.
Obviously as I get older my ability to deal with the heat diminishes.
The ambient air temperature was only 91f but the humidity was 75%.
Fairly chilly here in Michigan today (which means that the weather is more like normal), with a high of only around 51F so far. It suddenly got much darker at my house, so I checked the weather map and saw one of the oddest precipitation maps that I can ever recall seeing. It's like Michigan has the Green-Rain-Pox all over it! :smiley_shrug:
