Tony Bennett definitely wasn't my kind of music but I did recognize his talent. He won my grudging admiration over the past 10 -20 years with his willingness to work with much younger performers from a very broad range of genres.

Tony Bennett was also a veteran of WW2.

He was drafted into the US Army in 1944 and was assigned to the 255th Infantry Regiment of the 63rd Infantry Division.

Towards the end of the war, Bennett was involved in the liberation of a concentration camp (the Kaufering subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp). He'd later write in his autobiography about this experience and say "I saw things no human being should ever have to see."

Bennett was the real deal in WWII. Unlike a lot of future entertainers of his generation who did USO shows or were clerk-typists he served on the front lines in tough fighting until the war ended, then did shows. The experience made him a life long pacifist. He was no coward though. He got demoted for dining with blacks in a segregated Army and marched Selma to Montgomery in 1965 and was neck deep in the civil rights movement for 40 years. His driver was murdered by the Klan.

It is difficult to mourn a man who lived such a long and amazing life who did what he loved for 70 long years, championed justice and always tried to make the world a better place. All the while he was a class act. We are all a little poorer without him in the world, his type is a real rarity in the world and vanishing breed.

It's sad to think most people will likely remember Sinead O'Connor for the negatives in her life rather than her long career as a singer.

I think more than a few of the events that people think of as "negative" were actually heroic. Speaking truth to power is a tough way to go in life but she did it. She had no regrets either. I'd much rather look back at a time I stood for the helpless, then feeling guilty about not doing it 30 years later. If Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson support you, and Madonna is against you, you are probably doing something right. I'd also say that history bore out her actions and if it didn't say; condone the techniques, her argument was sound and just.

Still, we all do dumb shit at times, and I hope when I am gone my friends and family remember all the dumb shit I did through my life and laugh uproariously at it, while raising a glass.

I figured this might interest some people here.  The last of the "four horsemen of sasquatch," Peter Byrne, has passed away at 97.

The Abominable Snowmen and Bigfoot hunter, Peter C. Byrne has died on at the age of 97, on Friday, at around noon, July 28, 2023.  He lived a long and dedicated life in pursuit of cryptozoological subjects, and achieved what few could imagine, routinely finding sponsorships for his searching for Yeti and North American Sasquatch, for almost six decades.
