Tsunami hits Tonga after giant volcano eruption

Some emergency management groups that I'm a member of on Facebook are reporting that residents in Alaska were awakened around 4am by rumbling/booming noises which were attributed to the volcanic eruption 6000 miles away!

Seems like Tonga is still cut off with very little news getting out.

The Red Cross were speaking on the radio earlier; apparently there's some HF traffic but not much else. Their people on the ground have satellite phones but the dust cloud was blocking them.

It's like it's the mid 20th Century again.

Tonga tsunami: Anxious wait for news after Tonga cut off
QuoteTongans living overseas are facing an anxious wait for news of loved ones after a volcano triggered a tsunami.
The underwater volcano erupted on Saturday, about 65km (40 miles) north of the capital Nuku'alofa.
The eruption, which was heard as far away as the US, caused waves higher than a metre to crash into Tonga.
The authorities have not confirmed any deaths but communications are crippled, making it difficult to establish the scale of the destruction.

That is a very thick cloud of dust if it is blocking the satellite signal. It is generally silica but likely has minerals as well.

This dust can be real problem for engines that power generators as well as cooling airflow for the generator assembly itself. Fine silica will ruin an engine (any kind of engine) very quickly.

1 meter high waves do not sound big, but they do cause damage to low lying islands.

The plume looks like a nuke...obviously it is not but it certainly has the power of a nuke.

Folks you are on your own...Plan and act accordingly!

I will never claim to have all the answers. Depending upon the subject; I am also aware that I may not have all the questions much less the answers. As a result I am always willing to listen to others and work with them to arrive at the right answers to the applicable questions.
