Whoa. Anyone else tracking this? I hope it's much ado about nothing. I am NO fan of the Putin regime, but stability in Moscow is important right now. Threatened leaders tend to do unpredictable, desperate things.

From what I'm hearing, Wagner's head merc is pissed at Putin, Putin's pissed at him and now Wagner's head merc is being charged with inciting a mutiny against Putin.

Read an article that at least partial martial law is in effect in Moscow.

Prigozhin has taken control of southern Russian command center in Rostov. Wagner forces reported to be moving north towards Moscow.

QuoteSpeaking to BBC World Service Newshour, Saks says just before Russia began its 2022 attack on Ukraine the world thought Russia had "the second most powerful army in the world".

I posted about it yesterday in the Ukraine thread.

It appears to be on pause about 120 mi from Moscow. Prigozhin has called a halt for unknown reasons.

According to the BBC Lukashenko de-escalated and Prigozhin agreed to turn around to avoid bloodshed.
About half an hour before this Russia started tearing up its own road. :icon_crazy:

I believe Lukashenko is in Turkey. Perhaps you mean Prigozhin?

QuoteBelarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko has held talks with Wagner mercenary group head Yevgeny Prigozhin during which Prigozhin agreed to stop his troops and "de-escalate the situation", Rossiya 24 news channel said.
I don't follow the news closely enough to know wether Lukashenko is currently in Turkey or not. They wouldn't have to have met in person, I think a phone call would be more likely.

My sources say Lukashenko brokered a deal with Prigozhin.  Wagner forces are standing down and Prigozhin has agreed to leave the country in exchange for dropping all treason charges against him.

Don't know what Prigozhin was trying to accomplish, but knowing how Kremlin's treats its promises of amnesty to disfavored ex-patriots, Prigozhin will be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life, however short that may be.

Too much to unpack here and I bet half of what's been reported will be proven woefully incomplete or untrue in the coming days and weeks.

Yep, it will be a life of woulda, coulda, shoulda.

This is the biggest question mark for me on this deal.  I don't see how this ends well for him, even if he is allowed to leave the country as part of the amnesty.  He challenged the king and the king cannot be seen to be weak.

I guess he didn't have many options given his status as an international war criminal. But I would think Belarus would be one of the last places Prigozhn would want to go and test the sincerity of Putin's promise to let bygones bygones.

How long do you give him before someone delivers a gift from Russia, with love?

No, he will be so distraught over never being able to return to Russia He will jump out of my window and commit suicide to end his agony. Would you like to know which day?

Balconies and windows do seem to hold a strange attraction for people who end up on Putin's wrong side.

How I long for the old ways involving hollow umbrellas and radioactive pellets.  Not so clumsy or random as a push from a great height.  An elegant solution for a more civilized age.
