So I always like to modify stuff, notebook, covers, tools, gears, everything. Years past I took a cheap( like I think I found it in the woods) 1 1/4 lb hatchet head and put on a 28" boys axe handle. Well in use it worked but, the steel is soft and dulls cutting air.

I looked around and found the CRKT  Chogan Hatchet, it had the look I wanted with a " dedicated " hammer on the back, it's  1 1/2 lb so not heavy. My plan was to put a boys axe handle on it from the start, maybe even a full 36" axe handle.Linky https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09HJS87WP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Well it came in and  it's a meh from the factory. It came with a hollow ish Glass Reinforced Nylon handle, very unbalanced, and duller then a pencil eraser. Did a few test whacks on 2X4, it did not cut it just crushed the wood.  The cutting face has recesses top and bottom of the wedge, I assume for help splitting wood but look like they will hinder chopping. The wedges run from cutting edge to the eye and flair out in width past the eye( as seen by the ridge in top pick. I have no fear of cutting my self when running my thumb along the edge Has a thick coating on the head, handle has some patter on the holdy part but its still slick when wet.

Current plan is to sharpen it and whack some wood. Then go full mod. I will grind down on the wedges maybe hollow them out a bit more towards the eye, then put on a wood axe handle of some size. I will update when i get around to doing stuff to it.

Pics or it didn't happen.

From what little I know of CRKT's hatchets, the ones with the wood handles seem to be better reviewed and better quality than the nylon handled models.

I'm actually considering picking up one of their Freyr, Berserker or Skeggox axes at some point. The Freyr and Berserker axes have traditional wood handles, but the Skeggox has what looks like a set of G10 or Micarta scales over a full tang.

I saw them but I didn't want to pay that much to basically chop it up and remake it. I looked at cold steel and other hatchets, but for price, in stock/ out of stock and all I grabbed this one to mess with.
