HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (AP) — At least six people died and 24 were wounded in a shooting at a July Fourth parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, and officers are searching for a suspect who likely fired on the festivities from a rooftop, police said Monday.
Highland Park Police Commander Chris O'Neill, the incident commander on scene, urged people to shelter in place as authorities search for the suspect.

The really fucked up thing is the world has been descending into madness for a long time.

It's just more noticeable now with the rise of the internet, social media and 24/7 news channels.

My guess is either the recent SCOTUS rulings, the economy, inflation, or just the general desire to be a jerk and hurt people.

Could be anything that motivated this person.

Or just that the media sensationalizes these tragedies and it's yet another disturbed individual looking for his 15 minutes of fame.

Not saying race/politics/culture wars aren't a factor. But I have to wonder how many of these lowlifes would be content to vent their hatred on social media if they didn't know they'd be the center of attention for at least one 24 hour news cycle.

When the media goes looking for motives and focuses on the shooter's online rants, I wonder if maybe they're not asking the right questions. Or at least not all of them.

Yeah.

I get the disturbing feeling that a lot of the media doesn't care about what happened or why, they're just happy to get a story that'll bring up their ratings and bring in viewers for a little while.

I just had a thought about how no one noticed this dingus on the roof of whatever building he was on.

He probably wasn't the only one on a rooftop watching the parade, so no one thought about it until the shots started ringing out.

Given the large crowds at parades, it isn't unusual to see folks on rooftops trying to get a better view of the festivities and to escape the crowds. You see this all the time with the Macy's parades and even parades in small towns.

So this dingus probably took advantage of that and figured having the high ground would give him a better vantage point to start his evil acts.

Based on the videos that have come out so far, it looks like he was shooting from somewhere between First and Second streets on Central avenue.

ABC News has a little more information:

QuoteAuthorities believe Monday's mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, had been planned for weeks, and they say more than 70 rounds were fired from the gunman's high-powered rifle.

QuoteThe 21-year-old suspect, Robert "Bobby" Crimo III, is accused of opening fire from a roof of a business, which he accessed from a fire escape ladder, police said.
QuotePolice said Crimo wore women's clothing during the shooting to apparently allow him to hide his facial tattoos and blend in with the crowd to flee.

"Following the attack Crimo exited the roof, he dropped his rifle and he blended in with the crowd and he escaped," police said Tuesday. "He walked to his mother's home who lived in the area and he blended right in with everybody else."

It seems a little strange to me that he had been planning this for weeks, but nobody around him knew a single thing.  I'm also curious what women's clothing he wore to hide his face tattoos that would help him blend in.  In a chaotic situation like that, he probably could have dressed as a clown and gotten away without attracting much attention, so it probably isn't a significant factor, though there is a ladies' clothing shop on that block, so I wonder if it's connected, at all.  (I'm thinking that while he was scouting for a place to shoot from, he might have done some shopping to avoid suspicion, maybe.)

This little waste of space had a YouTube channel that was scrubbed it from their site not too long after he was taken into custody by the Highland Park PD.

And given he planned this for weeks and had a disguise, any attempts by his lawyers to use an insanity defense and say he wasn't in his right mind at the time of the shooting may have just went out the window.

Edited by NT2C to remove channel name. Dude's not getting traffic there from us.

Edited again by 12_Gauge_Chimp to remove channel mention and to update post to reflect YouTube removing the channel from their site.

Thank you for the concern, this was about an hour North East of us.  I didn't even hear about this until late last night after they arrested the jackass.

I heard on one of the late news reports, this guys dad had run against the mayor of the town and lost.  Don't know if that is/was a motivating factor.

Seems like the guy was fairly isolated from everyone. He lived with his father and uncle. The uncle said in an interview that the guy lived in an aapartment on the back side of the house. The uncle also said he didn't think he'd had a job for the last couple of years, and seemed to spend a lot of his time working on his youtube stuff and doing art work.

That does make a little more sense, then, I suppose.   :-\

Hearing now that he had previously made threats to family members, and police had confiscated knives and such.  Also had threatened or attempted to kill himself.  Nothing that found its way into a background check, though, apparently.

Ugh.  I'd ask if it was gang violence, someone with a grudge, or a drunken idiot, but I suppose it doesn't really matter as far as they're involved--no friendly bullet and all.  As long as your friend and her people are safe.
