I'm noticing a lot of poop, but a dearth of the actual topic: bacon.

I would say that makes me wonder about you people, but I'm past that point.

Hey, I didn't...well crap, maybe I did start it this time.   :-\

A dearth of bacon...so we turned the thread into a microcosm of California itself?   :icon_crazy:

The original story said this was due to come into effect "at the beginning of next year". Is that the 1st of January 2022 or is there another date set? I've not seen one quoted.

I guess the lesson for California folk is to stock up on bacon before then, in case of supply chain disruptions and/or bacon inflation.

(Does it apply to other cuts of pork too? So perhaps stock up on those as well, if you have freezer space, in proportion to your consumption?)

Yea all pork.  Actually all meat. It's Just the pork farms that have been unable (refuse ? ) to bow to the  demands of one  ( other)state

Fortunately, Amazon has us covered: https://smile.amazon.com/Cooked-Superior-Refrigeration-Grocery-Storage/dp/B07DGQJGCZ/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=bacon&qid=1628286485&sr=8-10

10-year shelf life.  Okay, it's a little over a buck a slice, but in the ZPAW when the aliens abduct you, every slice will be like gold.  Aliens... they're coming for the bacon.  :icon_crazy:

I think the other meat industries are severely struggling as well. Pork is just in the worse condition of them and "Bacon" makes for better headlines. It's also a better story if the villain is a corporate industry and not a very well intentioned law that few understood the true effect of passing. Picking out just the pork industry makes it easier for there to he one bad guy/entity. Calling out masses of well intentioned but ignorant people doesn't make for a popular news article.

If CA really pushes this hard, there is a good chance of massive impacts to food prices.

Anyone know how this impacts prepackaged processed food? Is that included in this law? The logistics of tracking which batch of hot pockets or microwave burritos are CA compliant would be insane.

Honestly, I'd hazard that no-one--at all--has really thought through the ramifications.  If nothing else, people usually don't when mandating things for farming.

I mean, hell...is it restricted to food?  A lot of gloves, wallets, etc are made from pigskin.

I bet a few organized crime factions have already thought it through and are  already setting up distribution networks.

Uh...would a couple bucks a rasher on bacon be enough to interest orgcrime?

It's not like olive oil, where it's trivially handled at multiple points in the chain.

I have the impression less of a markup on cigarettes brings in organized crime. I used to see occasional local news stories of truckloads of cigarettes being caught at the border.

If there's an expecation of a 60% price increase if everything goes right, and near complete unavailability if it goes wrong, someone will be trying to figure out how to make money.

Now I want a comedy movie made about a bacon smuggling ring.

If only John Candy and Robin Williams weren't dead because I could totally see either one of them in a movie like that.

The sad reality is when org crime gets involved. People die. Imagine getting whacked because of bacon, pork chops or pork rinds
