I'm reading that the quake was around 6.8 magnitude.

Knowing as little as I do about earthquakes, I know a quake of that magnitude is going to royally mess things up. Especially in highly populated areas.

Indeed, especially when much of the local architecture is primarily made of earthen bricks.  Those structures are prone to collapse even in moderate tremblers.  Reports now indicating over 2000 dead and many more injured.  This is an awful tragedy for Morocco.
