In My Experience... / Re: Near-death experiments in ...

The rancid oil possibility did occur to me (after replying to you). Short of a food chemist providing an educated guess, it might take an 8+ year trial to settle which type of canned tuna is best for long term storage.

You know what else occured to me after my reply? I bet oil based tuna would taste better in the absence of mayo, and the drained oil could theoretically be used for cooking or even in an improvised oil lamp! That's an experiment I might have the patience to do ...

ETA: I agree the interior coating is supposed to prevent the food content from interacting with the metal. And I also agree that Bumblebee as a company seems like they'd have their canning technology and QC thoroughly sorted out. All I can think is that even that coating must have a finite shelf life. And that given enough time, water seems capable of penetrating anything.

@majorhavoc I was thinking the opposite, that the oil might go rancid, you don't have to worry about that with the water, I didn't even think about the calories / energy available in the oil version. Smart. And then which is easier to eat right out of the can with no mayo? 'Cause there's no mayo in the PAW, maaaybe crackers or hard tac.

Actress Anne Schedeen, 77.  Most notable role was as Kate Tanner on Alf.  (I could find no link that didn't immediately dive into her politics, so no link is provided here)

Quote from: MacWa77ace on June 16, 2026, 07:36:24 AM@majorhavoc How did it smell when you first opened the can? Like tuna or metallic tuna?

That's interesting that it tasted like metal. IIRC there's a coating on the inside of canned goods cans so the metal doesn't interact with the contents. Did you see any decay in the coating? Bumble Bee should have quality canning.

I wonder what 'in oil' tuna would have tasted like.

I've seen a lot of steveMRE videos where he eats canned pork from WWII rations and I can't remember him saying it tasted like metal, but that doesn't mean he didn't, just means it didn't register with me.

I wonder what the nutritional values were.
That's a really good point, Mac. The water may have reacted with the metal can in a way that vegetable oil wouldn't have. I buy tuna in water strictly for health reasons (much lower fat and calories). But for emergencies oil might be a better choice if it lasts/tastes better for longer. Plus, calories and fat are arguably more important in an emergency scenario when food needs to be rationed.

To answer your question, a metallic odor was immediately detectable as soon as I opened it.

Definitely reach out to them. I had a TD-H3 that stopped working after less than a year, and when I reached out to support they asked a few questions and then sent a new one my way. I'm not sure what their criteria are, but they seem to be quick to provide good service. I've been pretty happy with them otherwise, so I hope they take care of you too!

Discovered that one of my Tidradio H8's appears to have died.  I'll get on the forums to see if they have any suggestions, but it won't send or receive, despite appearing normal at turn on.  At the same time, one of the batteries for it has stopped working.  It shows full charge (green on either the charger, or using the USB charge port), but won't power the radio.  On top of that, the 771 antenna that came with it fell apart on me (the threads pulled out of the antenna body).

The reason I was checking it all was because we had our local festival / fireworks this past weekend and I needed it for CERT.  Fortunately, I've got a few others and was able to use another radio instead.  Of course, the belt clip on that one immediately self-destructed, forcing me to swap them.  Not sure what GMRS god I offended, but leave me alone - at least until the paperwork goes through so that the police department can give us their old radios to use!   :awesome:

Was in the basement and found an old Home Depot bucket full of emergency food.  This was a failed attempt from my early prepping days.  FYI: a DIY store bucket and lid are no where close to air tight or moisture proof.  I'm not even going to try to describe what the unprotected cardboard packages of pasta looked like, let alone what they smelled like.  #epicpreppingfail

I thought if anything might still be edible, it would be this canned tuna.

That best by date reads June 04 2018. I've heard of canned goods lasting a lot longer than 8 years, so I gave it a try.  FYI: the ".49" notation is almost certainly the price.  Remember those days? Ah, to be young and living in those carefree, when-food-was-actually-affordable pre-pandemic times!

I mixed it with some (unexpired) mayonaise and had myself a nice post-apocalyptic tuna sandwich.  This was Saturday - I figured I'd wait a few days to see if I was still alive to report on my findings.  1) It did not kill me.  2) No gastro-intestinal distress or other ill effects.  3) Goddamned awful tasting.  If licking the terminals of a 9 volt battery had an identifiable taste, it would be this stuff.  Still recognizable as tuna, but that was completely dominated by an overpowering metallic flavor note.  I finished the sandwich but threw the rest of the tuna salad away.  A waste of good mayonaise.  Rotate your canned food stores, people.  And if you're stocking dry goods (pasta, rice, meal-helper mixes, etc), be damn sure it's well sealed against oxygen and moisture.

Expensive dehydrated foods like Augason Farms and Readywise are derided by many people (including myself at one point) as over-priced ripoffs when shelf-stable goods can be found much cheaper at your local grocery store.  Those people do not fully understand that in spite of the best intentions, it's hard to stay disciplined about food rotation and ideal storage conditions, especially five or ten years down the road.  A mix of ultra-long shelf life emergency rations to supplement your grocery store food rotation system is never going to be a bad idea (or a waste of money) in my book.

I recently became a member of ARES/RACES for two of my local counties; one partners with their county EOC, and the other with the American Red Cross and local hospitals.

This has been beneficial in helping build community (a prep I feel strongly about), as well as helping me focus gear acquisition around what will be useful for emergency communications within my area and also outside for message passing.
