Alright this is the $18 challenge. Whats the coolest piece of bug out gear you can buy for $18?
I put $120 on a greendot card. And I spent all of it today on a polartec 300 fleece jacket and a merino wool hoodie.
But i have $18 left over. I don't really have anything on my needs list for less than an $18.
So whats a cool piece of bug out gear I should buy for $18 or less?
And dont say something sensible like batteries. Lol!
Or more food (unless its something really interesting). Lol.
Show me something cool. That I havent thought of. :)
PS - For those that dont know me. I have a complete INCH and BOB. And backpacking gear. But Im always looking for cool pieces of bug out gear. Thanks for participating! 🤪
I love challenges like this, gets the creative juices flowing :awesome:
Digital voice recorder (w/VOR) (http://www.amazon.com/Mahaishangmao-Recorder-Reduction-Charging-Interviews/dp/B07TRLLW31)
For use with your Baofeng or SW radio, headphone out jack on the radio to microphone in on the recoder and set to voice operated recording. Silently scan and record any activity while you sleep.
Mini Handheld Digital LCD Multimeter (http://www.amazon.com/Handheld-Multimeter-Ohmmeter-Voltmeter-Multimetro/dp/B01M63OS00/). Is it live? Does it conduct?
Fishing gill net, fish trap, snare wire. Many under $18. Maybe catch breakfast (or minnows for bait) while you're off doing something else.
Folding slingshot/wrist rocket (https://www.amazon.com/Beeman-Marksman-Laserhawk-Folding-Slingshot/dp/B000MD68JM) Mine gets used mostly for launching line over tree limbs (antennas, buck pole, etc), but I could get lucky with a treed squirrel given enough time and rocks.
JB Weld (https://www.amazon.com/J-B-Weld-8281-Professional-Reinforced/dp/B014OVHAOY/). For putting stuff back together, plugs leaks/cracks in metal tanks (crankcase, radiator, gas tank) too. Nobody has enough :)
Close Quarter Hack Saw (http://www.amazon.com/GreatNeck-74009-Dual-Action-Adjustable-Aluminum/dp/B08YS4BLPY) For taking stuff apart in tight places.
Electrically Conductive Wire Glue (http://www.amazon.com/Sciplus-Electrically-Conductive-Soldering-Wire/dp/B000Z9H7ZW). Quick electronic field repairs.
Valve Stem tool and spare cores (https://www.amazon.com/Slime-20088-4-Way-Valve-Cores/dp/B0020T17J2%5B/url). They're such little things, but vehicles aren't going anywhere without them. For use only on your own vehicle of course.
Glow in The Dark Paint (http://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-214945-7-Ounce-Glow-Dark/dp/B000FBMRAK) Can make moving around a dark house easier/safer. I painted small strips on a couple of our fire extinguishers too.
Handheld Sterilization Wand UV Light Sanitizer Portable (http://www.amazon.com/BEWITU-Sterilization-Sanitizer-Ultraviolet-Household/dp/B089K1SJV4). Kill cooties.
Steramine Sanitizing Tablets (http://www.amazon.com/Steramine-Quaternary-Sanitizing-Tablets-Sanitizer/dp/B079H3CPWM) Ditto
Gorilla Waterproof Patch & Seal Spray (http://www.amazon.com/Gorilla-Black-Waterproof-Patch-Spray/dp/B08DDBPPHL). Expedient repair for leaks, good starter item for a roof repair kit.
Lansky Puck (https://www.amazon.com/Lansky-Puck-Multi-Purpose-Sharpener-Blade/dp/B000B8FW0Y) for sharpening tools. Chainsaw File kit (https://www.amazon.com/Chainsaw-Sharpener-File-Kit-Sharpening/dp/B07SH3G7DH/) too.
Welding torch (http://www.amazon.com/MR-TORCH-Welding-Upgraded-Certified/dp/B07NVMY43D). Free rusted nuts & bolts, sweat copper pipes, thaw frozen locks.
Camo tarps, help hide your vehicle or yourself in the woods. Hunting blind use too, especially if you let the wildlife get used to it being there.
Gotta go to work, might have more later.

Awesome!!!!! :)
Those steri tablets are cool! Never heard of them. The slingshot idea is cool too! And i used to have a vox recorder for my scanners. Thats a good one too!
Im gonna try to come up with ones myself today. I love these challenges too.
If you put $120 on the card, but have $18 left, then you didn't use it all. But I digress... :clownshoes:
Why not reload it with more cash and save for the proverbeal "rainy day" expense?
Word of caution from an experienced user of the "Close quarter Hacksaw"... In my use, the blade bent/broke 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the time before I got through the item I was wanting to cut. I got mine 25+ years ago, doesn't have the fancy cushioned handle though.

Load more onto it?! That would take all the fun out of this excercise. And besides if you leave amy balance they start charging you $6 a month. So i never keave a balance beyond 30 days.
Ya. I have one of thos hacksaw handle things too you have to use a real light touch. But i think thats only if you use the end of the blade. I think the center oart is held in place well. But ya they arent that great. I dont think i ever used it beyond the first time. Its still in my tool chest somewhere. Lol.
Batteries?! Haha good one. I laugh. But i do need a fresh set of nimhs. They always end up getting used around the house. And invariably get lost. I buy tenergys in sets of 12 off ebay. Good solid aa's. And the price point is perfect when they get lost all the time. ;)
Dont ask me why i use Greendot cards and not the account i share with my wife. ;)

Reminds me of that new laundry detergent that comes in sheets. I wonder if that would be a good inch bag item? I guess sooner or later u have to wash your cloths. And dr bronners only goes so far.

I would find a different pre loadable service to use that doesn't charge stupid service fees. I thought the Feds outlawed those fees on balances? Or was that just gift cards?
I think that was just gift cards, NapalmMan67.
I've got one of those Greendot cards as well (well, it's similar to a Greendot card. Mine is a Walmart Money Card) and it's got like a 4 bucks a month service charge.
Heres a good one. I just need a new 5 gal bucket to go with it.

Ya. Its really lame. I just remembered tho. You can get around it if you have a paypal card associated with your paypal acct. I should have used it. But forgot it as its tucked way down in my wallet. Because i didnt want my wife finding it. Lol. God im terrible.
It seems to me i had a problem loading it last time tho. I dont remember. Ill have to try it at riteaid. I know walgreens stopped selling and loading greendot cards. And the time before last it wouldnt let you load more than $500 at a time onto a greendot. I forget what i was trying to pay for.
So the oaypal card might work. If u can find a place to load it. The paypal card isnt a credit card either. It just lets you use your paypal balance. What i usually do is take that as payment whenever i sell anything. Then use it tomake purchases. There is no monthly fee. But either the seller or buyer does pay a small percentage. I think its if you sell something and take paypal that u pay a fee. I dont think you pay a fee if you buy using your balance.

Works well, takes a little to dissolve, but reviews are typically positive. It's used in restaurants and that does speak volumes.
My typically use was to take a small prescription bottle for each patrol and put a handful of them in it. (About the size of a skittles candy) . Add a piece of cotton or another type of desiccant to keep dry. That way the large bottle was preserved from grubby hands and kept controlled.
***Keep in mind this is a 'sanitizer' and not a 'sterilizer'. ***
Overall, safer than bleach, easier to transport. longer lifespan. Now that said, it can't be used to purify water, etc.
Bleach has it's place, but I think so do these.

That USB dynamo crank is interesting, have to wonder how it compares to the dynamo emergency radios for power output and reliability. I've read a lot of comments that the emergency radio ones break easily, but the one on my old (late 90's) Grundig FR-200 still works and I used it fairly often back then, but always treated it semi-gently while cranking.
For the slingshot line launcher, lightweight string tied to a 3/4" nut is what I use. Bring extra nuts and string :)
5 Tine Fish Spear (http://www.amazon.com/South-Bend-Tine-Fish-Spear/dp/B000LNU21I/). Turn your walking stick into a fish, frog, and snake spear. Pro tip, wear a yellow shirt and you'll look like Aquaman wandering through the woods.
3M™ Scotchlok™ Electrical Connectors (http://www.amazon.com/3M-Scotchlok-Electrical-Connector-stranded/dp/B0035R7TKO) Great for splicing into small gauge wires, like fixing trailer wiring or tapping into power in the BOV. Snap on with pliers and can be removed without damaging the original wiring.
Cigarette lighter socket (https://www.amazon.com/Electop-Charger-Cigarette-Lighter-Adapter/dp/B01FJ8OXX2) for the above. Or get one with a mount and mount it under the dash, inside the glovebox or console box. I tapped into wiring tied directly to the battery so it always has power as my newer truck kills power to everything 5 mins or so after the truck is shut off.
5 watt solar panel (https://www.amazon.com/Newpowa-Monocrystalline-High-Efficiency-Maintainer-Charging/dp/B00L60Y6Y4) Along with the two above, can leave it on the dashboard to trickle charge the battery.
Bow Saw (http://www.amazon.com/Valley-36-915mm-BOW-SAW/dp/B008BL43A8) More for home/base camp use maybe. I keep one in the BOV, short of having a chainsaw it helps (along with a tow strap or logging chain) to clear a downed tree blocking a road or trail. Just need to saw it enough so it breaks where you want it to when you start dragging it with the vehicle.
Collapsible Bucket (http://www.amazon.com/Freegrace-Collapsible-Multifunctional-Perfect-Upgraded/dp/B01A1TVF44) Another item in my BOV kit, I've used it twice to put out still smouldering fires left by careless campers.

Nice selection!
I have heard the same thing about the cranks. The one on my emergency radio feels like a 6 times use device or something. Might last for a week. Lol. But who knows.
I like the slingshot idea. But i have had this on my list forever.

If you need some and want to play, let me know. I've a bit available. I use it to teach the Scouts & Leaders. It's safer than bleach for sanitizing.
Vwry generous of you, brian. But i can oick some up. Whats your review of them? They look very interesting. Like a good around the house preo item.
I mean do you literally wash dishes with them?

Nothing. Except my wife doesn't see another order for prepping, bugging out or backpacking gear. Lmao! Luckily i pick up all the deliveries off the front porch. And decide if they come in the house. Or fall into the abyss of my garage, shop, prepping, bugging out supplies and coordination center - that is my garage. Lol!
"Oh... No honey. This isnt a new jacket. I've had this is my hiking gear for years!"
If a delivery shows up in my house with another new jacket, new sleeping bag, new tent, new whatever for prepping/bugging out. She will kill me.
Yes. I have a problem.:)
She did comment about how poorly I had set up packs for her and my son this month. Which she doesnt realize is a green light to go on a prepping shopping spree. Lol. She's coming around slowly.

Most gift cards (like for Amazon, for example) only allow you to use them at that specific site or store they're for. A prepaid card like GreenDot allows you to use it anywhere a regular credit or debit card is accepted.
I've used my prepaid Walmart card to buy guns and parts from places like Classic Firearms or MidwayUSA. I've also used it to buy stuff from Amazon.
On the flipside, I can't use an Amazon gift card or a Walmart gift card to buy stuff from Classic Firearms or MidwayUSA.

I had a friend who worked for the phone company. He gave me a bunch of similar connectors but they are filled with an insulating gel. I would never use them like in an automobile application. But they are pretty slick. They do have those barrel connectors with solder in them. That i think you just apply a flame too. Like from a lighter. But i have never used those. I do use barrel connectors with dialectric grease. I still dont have a complete vehicle emergency bag. But that would be a good addition I need to work on that list. At this point i just have various tools and fluids.

They also protect your regular debit or credit card from getting ripped off. But its easier to get two debit cards from your bank. And use one for regular charges like bills. And the other card for the internet. That way if your internet card takes a hit. You just have to replace that one card. Instead of having to update your card information on every single bill you pay with it. Which is the biggest hassle of having fraud on your account. So we have one card for use as a bill paying card. And one we use for purchases online or otherwise.

My credit is too poor for an actual credit card and my bank closed my account years ago, so a prepaid card is also a good idea for someone in a similar situation as mine.
I get pretty much the same features as a credit card minus having to have a high credit score.
I had an issue where someone stole my card info on Google Play back in 2020 (I've since stopped using Google Play for anything) and used all the money on it, something like 60 bucks, for a stupid game app. A quick phone call to my card services line about it and I had a new card in the mail and got all my money back that the person stole.

While I'd seen them before I'd never used one until needing to replace a taillight on a trailer and the kit included them, but I installed a few punch down blocks in a short stint with a company that installed PBX systems which use a similar connection. The landline phone system in our area still use these same type connections, installed in the 1970's. Their biggest advantage besides being quick to install imo is not requiring any slack in the existing wire to make a new connection which makes them convenient for bundled automotive wiring, but not suggesting there isn't better physical and electrical connection methods either, as any of us old-timers that worked with computer ribbon cables might agree. Kids today will never know the joy of working with those :)
Vehicle emergency gear..., Mini D Handle Shovel (http://www.amazon.com/Bond-LH015-Mini-Handle-Shovel/dp/B000X47NJY). I added brackets on the 'shelf' under the truck cap where the cap clamps to the bed rail to hold one of these along with a crowbar. Personal preference but I haven't had much luck with folding shovels/entrenching tools left in a vehicle, screw section rusts shut or it breaks at the hinge under use, but cheaper quality ones and a complete lack of preventative maintenance on my part might have something to do with that. The shelf on the other side of the truck cap holds a fire extinguisher and a fishing rod/reel fwiw. Not necessarily the gear I'd choose for an "Escape from LA" scenario tho.

A Visa reloadable card works everywhere, at least from what my old lady says. So I guess I'm not following the appeal of the other specific cards then if they limit you to usage locations.

I think you can use a greendot to buy gun stuff. It works everywhere ive used it. I dont remember why i never used a visa one. Are they reloadable easily? Monthly fee?
The greendot ones were good for me cause there is a walgreens and riteaid close to my house. Walmart is a ways away.
I think amazon and the others are just giftcards for those places. Which is different than a reloadable card.
My paypal card has been great. Easy to reload, can use mypaypal balance or i choose to take funds from our normal checking acct. I dont know their politics about guns and ammo tho. Purchasing at least. I know you cant use paypal directly to buy gun parts or guns alot of financial institutions dont allow that now days. Trying to find a merchant acct so you can sell gun parts is a huge pain. There is only a few that allow that now. I had an intuit/quicken one for years. But had to sign a statement saying no sale if receivers or lowers as they called them. They thought all firearm receivers were lowers. Just shows you how little they know about firearms. I doubt you could get an intuit one today. I think i just found an aggressive salesman at the time. And i still could not take credit card oayments when i sold a firearm.
Again, I don't use them so not sure of the service fees... but I don't think there are.
But, this made me chuckle- As she's running the card for payment in the Square.

My card is a Mastercard and it's good everywhere Mastercards are.
It only costs me like 3 bucks or so each time I want to reload it and I have to have a minimum of 20 bucks to load it, but that's ok since I tend to put way more on it than 20 bucks anyway.
I just wish it didn't have that monthly service fee, but other than that I'm good with it.
And I've used my card to buy guns. Last thing I bought with it was an upper from PSA. It's your money on the card and Walmart doesn't really care what you buy with it from what I've seen.
Looks like most cards charge a monthly or annual fee. But i would look at this list. And other lists. Cause there is a wide variety. There too pick only has an annual fee $9.95. If they dont get you with a monthly or annual fee they tend to charge higher atm fees. Like $2.95 each time. That adds up if you need cash regularly. Paypal did get a top mention in one of the lists. But they all have hidden fees. And arent up front when you go shopping for one. And all of them want you to do direct deposit.
I think you should look for one with an online bank attached as its really easy to deposit checks you just take a pic of the check with your phone and it deposits it. Which is pretty cool. And online banks have a ton of features, the lowest rates and alot of other benefits.
If you need a local brick and morter bank get a credit union. Hands down! I banked with wells fargo for years. I had over 5k in bamk fees one year. Granted i was running hundreds of thousand of dollars thru thise accounts a year. But still. The nsf fee aline was $35. My credit union only charges an nsf fee if you write a check and funds arent available. Otherwise they juat decline the sale and you know to go deposit some money. Wells fargo and every other national bank has fees for everything.
https://www.bankrate.com/finance/credit-cards/prepaid/
Yep, we left 5/3 because they became crazy fee happy. Refinanced our mortgage last year with our local Credit Union and they have been outstanding in every aspect. They're dividends are higher for savings/bonds also.
Oh, and I'll just stick with my regular CC for transactions. I don't have anything to hide from my old lady... she has a "secret" runaway account she thinks I don't know about. I ask her once in awhile if she'd like me to contribute to that to keep things moving in the right direction. :smiley_crocodile:

I love trader joes. I should research their food thata good for backpacking again. As all my bobs are filled with mountain house and entrees from mres. I gotta uae the entrees tho. They past their dates.
Atlantic Firearms gets cases of MREs in pretty often and charges like 170 bucks for two full cases. I'm actually considering a purchase from them at some point (last thing I bought from them was my AK and that was back in like 2014 :eek1:).
I've got some Sopako MREs, but they're the reduced sodium civilian ones and they taste awful. I guess reduced sodium translates to reduced flavor. :gonk:
