Title: Cbrn gas masks?
Post by: Moab on March 21, 2022, 05:49:35 PM
I finally decided to buy some gas masks. Holy shit are they expensive?! I thought i was gonna find some $50 military surplus masks. But after quite a bit of research it looks like a $250 Mira gas mask is the only way to go. I dont have $750 (need 3 of them) to spend on gas masks.

Any suggestions?

Aim Surplus had some LEO trade-in Drager CDR-4500 gas masks for 150, but I think they're sold out by now.

Other than that, I've got no idea since I've never bought a gas mask.

ETA: Just checked Aim Surplus and they are indeed sold out of the gas masks I mentioned.

Ya. Its crazy. You can get a cheaper parcell(sp?) Mask that takes standard 40mm cannisters. For about $100. Or so. But i dont know how expensive their cannisters or isreali surplus ones are for cbrn.

I know i remember gas masks being a dime a dozen in surplus storea. But that musr have been long before covid.

Anyone have experience with mp5 nato gas masks? My local surplus place has some. I have an email into them asking about french or polish manufacture and what sizes they may have. They take standard 40mm filters. They are $50. But I found them for $30 on budk. But the budk reviews were hit or miss. Theirs sounded like either new or complete crap. At least with these i can inspect in person.

I get what your saying. But considering where i live if a nuke ever landed in the US. There is a very high probability that it would land in my current neighborhood. We are a town of 30k surrounded by LAX, Los Angeles Air force Base and the Chevron oil refinery. So chances are we would just be dust. Lol. But i also like the ability to get thru common tear gas too.

I always remembered gas masks being the cheapest and most plentiful military surplus. I should have bought a bunch then. And nbc suits. You couldnt give those away. Not so anymore. I guess all the leftover US stuff gets sent to allies. Or something.

I have an Israeli Surplus mask which is IMO something that would save your life. Then I bought a Zekkip clone of a Parcel NB-100 mask just to see what a cheap mask is like. It's almost identical in looks, and I don't have the original to compare to. But if I compare it to the Israeli mask I have, the one thing I'd comment on is that on the Zekkip clone the head strap is made of some sort of fabric material where the Israeli's head straps are made of the same rubber as the mask and feel way more durable. The Israeli has individual lenses and the Zekkip has a lens that covers both eyes. And the 'face seal' doesn't seem substantial enough. I haven't done a real world test on either.

One thing to look for if you wear glasses is the ability to buy glasses frame accessories that can mount to the inside of the mask and you can put your prescription in them. The Israeli mask can do that, the Parcel Clone can't.

The Israeli came with a 'practice' insert which is nice. It simulates the air restriction of a filter without unsealing and using a real filter.

REAL PARCEL NB-100 $200 (Left) / ZEKKIP mask (right).

Both of these are 40mm. So the next step is stocking up on the NBC/CBRN filters. Which range wildly in price themselves. I'm finding them between $20-$50 each.

And it looks like both have a similar fabric type head strap.

I don't recommend the Zekkip, it was just a test to see what you get for $29.

@Moab I had a flashback to a similar discussion we were both a part of in 2022, so I looked it up and I had recommended the Israeli gas mask:

I know you weren't a fan of the Sportsman's Guide having member and non-member pricing, but I'll say now what I said then; the mask is definitely still affordable, uses a common 40mm filter without any adapter, and was designed by people who take this sort of thing seriously.

I wear glasses/contacts, and my glasses just fit under the mask. I know the visibility isn't the same as a full window, but they're still pretty affordable.

Just food for thought, you've trained for CBRN and know what to look for, but maybe see what you think?

I got mine off Sportsman's Guide on sale. I'm not a member of SG either.
I can't fit my glasses under the mask and get a good seal though but like I said there is an adapter mount for corrective lenses for that mask. It's called an M15 Gas Mask Prescription Lens Mounting Assembly .

SUPERGUM makes one specific but is out of stock right now.
OAKLEY makes a universal but don't know for sure it'd fit the Israeli.

Well, I ordered a Parcel Distribution NB-100 when it went onsale for $119. Currently listed at $199 on Amazon or $159 on the Parcel website.

I'll do a physical comparison and review of this and its inexpensive clone I also own. The Zekkip I got for $29.99
