A new version of our forum software was released back in early February. I decided to wait and see if it needed any tweaks and, sure enough, an update was released a week later. Now that it has been stable for a month, and that the author of all our mods has released new versions to work with the new software, I can begin the process of upgrading the system. I started that tonight by beginning to gather all the new packages and files and getting them ready for upload.
Because upgrading is a process not without hazards, and because I will be going to pick up Lamby and get her moved to her new place in the first week of April, I feel it is best to wait until after I get back from that. This way I will be able to devote my full attention to any difficulties that may arise.
I'm going to tentatively schedule the upgrade for the overnight hours of April 14-15. The system will be locked and taken offline @ 0001 EDT on 4/15 until the upgrade is completed.
The new system includes some pretty nice upgrades, including a new post editor (WYSIWYG) and a native mobile access mode (no more need for an app or mod).
Dates have been extended due to long recovery time from moving Lambykins
Looking forward to playing with all the new bells and whistles. Thanks for.the heads up so we won't panic should things go temporarily awry.
I would have blamed it on the Russians anyway.

keeping fingers crossed it'll have an option to just upload photos from our PC too? :smiley_chinrub:

SOAB... I'll have to review that again. Seems like I couldn't get that to work before, but it's probably OE. :rolleyes1:

Needs to be uploaded as an attachment and be under 25mb each, and 40mb total if multiple images. Even those sizes may be rejected due to server settings we can't change (unless we buy/build our own machine) but anything up to 10mb should absolutely work.
System will be locked and taken down for upgrade at 1800 EDT
Is there going to be anywhere to check the status of the upgrade while it's underway?

No, the site will most likely be offline.
Well, we're kinda back. We had some difficulties with the upgrade and some stuff got messed up but I'll be working over the weekend to get it all fixed. Right now I'm still in the process of getting the modifications we had reinstalled, that can take all week so please be patient as I try to reconstruct things that got borked.

Back on line, sort of. No worries. Take as much time as you need, do things right. We'll be right here when you come back.
Right now I'm having an issue getting the media embedder updated. Blasted thing insists there's a directory permission preventing it from uploading but all the others uploaded just fine.
This so AWESOME!!!!!!!
Omg! I van see the site on my samsung phone!!! Yay!!!
I just logged in. So i havent really taken it thru its paces. But hell ya! Good job nt2c!!!
Just FYI, the Aurora theme doesn't play nicely with nested quotes. It puts some as a white background with white text. I don't know if that's adjustable or not, so thought I would let you know.

Yes, but I'm keeping it anyway as it's easier on the eyes at 3AM on your phone.
Is there an option to make it look like it did before this upgrade? Everything is smaller on my laptop than it was before. Not text size but all of the thread windows are smaller size, if that makes sense.

Unfortunately, no. This is the new default theme used on the SMF software. The previous theme is for a different version and won't work with this one.

Yea, I'm a fan of dark mode, just a little miffed that it's hard to find a solid dark mode theme that isn't problematic in some way. The SociWT would be great if it didn't have transparency in the dialogue boxes against a patterned background and Aurora has the weird nesting box issue where it doesn't adjust the nested text to black against the white. Again, I wasn't sure if any adjustments could be made to those or if they just are as they are.
Alien_Shades_21_2 is growing on me.

If you are on PC, you can press the ctrl button while scrolling up or down with your mousewheel to adjust the size of any website. I have this site set to 160% because my eyesight is terrible and I've been wearing bifocals since I was 14 (junior high and high school were fun for me...).

Yes I have done that, it's just not the same lol.
I can't wear my bifocals when I'm on my laptop, I get dizzy. I very rarely wear them, just my normal glasses. I've been wearing them since kindergarten.
In trying to work out some of the errors that have crept into the new setup I was forced to uninstall everything and reinstall. This cleared some of the errors but not all. Regrettably, the "Reactions" mod had to be uninstalled and the data for it wiped. It still caused problems and was finally just left uninstalled. The "Conversations" mod also had to be uninstalled, data wiped, then reinstalled. That helped a lot but I'm still getting errors from it, albeit far fewer than the 958 in about 5 milliseconds it caused this afternoon. I wish the data could have been saved but it was corrupted pretty badly and while I do have backups going back to the first day this place went online and regularly afterward it would be a monumental chore to go through them one-by-one working backward and checking those tables in the DB for corruption until a good one was found. Better (IMHO) to just flush them and start over.
Stay tuned for more changes and updates. We're not done yet and there's some interesting stuff on the horizon.

Technically, we could copy this theme and modify the color scheme. It's supposed to be easy to do but I have zero experience with it.
I just want the text to be darker/bolder so it's easier to read.
This is the same light background/light text they have on the new Outlook version they gave us at work. Tough to read.

Whenever i click on a previously viewed thread it only takes me to the top. Not the last unread post. Is this a setting?
Also i have notifications set to send me an email upon a new post in a thread i started, have posted to or am following. But i dont get them all(?).

To answer your first question, this is slightly changed in this theme. Instead of clicking on the thread you can click the "unread posts" line on the top right below our slogan, or you can click the date/time line (above the name of the last poster).

As for the emails, I'll look into this and see if any got returned or are waiting to go out. Could be a fuckup with the mail server. I assume you've checked your spam folder?
On android in mobile the unread topics button is not upper right. Its left and below the forum main image. I also dont see a link for last poster. Maybe i am missing something tho?

Correct, but his original question was about getting to the new posts. The easiest way to do that here is to click the "NEW" button.
Jesus. Right in front of my face! I swear the hardest computer questions are also the simplest! Lol. Awesome. Thank you. I was looking for like the most recent posters name or something.

Ah. He'd mentioned names, so I was figuring he was trying to find the column that disappeared.
Let's not discuss my sanity or reading comprehension right now. :icon_crazy:
Here's another one for you, nt2c? How do you enlarge the box you type into? I know its supposed to be the little triangle in the bottom right corner. But on android it doesnt work.
No big deal. Please dont try to fix it. Just was wondering. I usually type my responses in a text editor first and then paste them here anyway. Cause I've lost stuff before. And i can't get the box any bigger. 😉

There's a limit for how big the system will let that box be. You may be at that limit.

Just for clarity. And future reference. I am unable to push that box to its boundaries. I cant make it smaller or bigger at all. It doesnt move or change size.

Maybe that will help notifications too. My notifications have not worked forever. I think I was even having problems on ZS. But i could be wrong about that. I have everything set to notify me by email and alert. And I rarely get an email of any kind. And no alerts. The alerts could be a phone setting but I dont rely on that anyway.
I just want to add that these minor inconveniences are nothing compared to how much you guys have improved this site. Its so very very good. You've done a really great job in a relatively short amount of time. Thank you so much for that.

Alerts don't go to your phone, they go to the top of your screen here.
I did the reinstall last night and what I found is that three of the modification packages we use are causing massive errors, despite being upgraded to work with this version (per their developer). One has been permanently removed, and two are temporarily turned off.
I just noticed this. But there does not seem to be a link on the homepage, on mobile, to Unread Topics. Only Unread Posts and Updated Topics.
Am I missing something?
This is typically where we would go to catch up on the entire forum. As I believe it lists all the threads/topics that you either haven't seen or have been newly posted to since your last visit. Which means basically everything on the forum that you haven't seen since your last visit.

Topics are started from an initial post. "Unread posts" would include
hundred all posts that start a new topic.
This is really hard to follow. Because all these pages look so similar.
The reason I thought no one was posting new topics. Was because there isn't a link on the homepage that takes you to all of the new topics. Or at least the new active ones you havent seen yet.
So what I'm saying is that there should be a link on the homepage that takes you to this page below. Notice that there are 10 or more pages to go thru.
*This is the only page where you can see ALL the new topics on the forum. Since your last visit.
Screenshot_20220427-172247_Chrome.jpg
Now referring to below. Currently when you click "Unread Posts" it takes you to a page titled "Recent Unread Topics" with only a few topics. (I go more into the name difference below.) Note there is only one page of topics. And only a few topics on that page. These are only topics you've created or posted too.
Screenshot_20220427-194708_Chrome.jpg
Referring to below again. If you click on "Updated Topics" it takes you to "Updated Topics". A page with only those topics you've created or posted too. Notice it also is only one page. And a few topics. These are only topics that you have created or posted too. Not new topics you havent seen yet.
Screenshot_20220427-200038_Chrome.jpg
*Which means there is nowhere on the homepage to go to see ALL the new topics or threads you haven't visited yet. Or even seen yet.
Unless you were to visit every single section manually. And look for any new topics. Which would take a long time.
In addition, the name of the link on the homepage - should match the name on the page your going to. Unread Posts takes you to Recent Unread Topics. I think this page name needs to be changed to Unread Posts. So that it matches the link referring to it. As it does show unread posts on threads your involved in.
All of the above is the same on desktop as it is on mobile. At least PC and Android.
Without "All Unread Topics" being linked on the homepage visitors will never see any new topics. Except by visiting each section manually. Which is unlikely.

There is a difference between "Recent Unread Topics" (topics with new posts since your last logon) and "All Unread Topics". If you want "All Unread Topics" then you know where to find the link. Most members aren't interested in reading every topic on the site back to day one, so a link such as you request would not get much use and something else would have to be removed to make room for it. Furthermore, while I
can make changes like that doing so would have the undesired effect of rendering the theme unable to be updated (automatically) in the future until those changes were reversed,
or, an entirely new theme would have to be created and be manually updated and changed every time the SMF version changed. BTDT on a different forum I used to run and it eventually became a 10+ hour a day job fixing things that had to be changed each time the forum version changed. I'm not interested in making this place that kind of a drain on my time.
If we had an actual IT department in-house to create and keep updated a custom theme, that would be one thing, we don't though. It's just me and one other guy with IT experience but zero experience working on forums. His experience probably exceeds my own in many ways but our two fields are worlds apart.

Moab - This is the link I use, I think it might work for you... give it a shot:
https://ufozs.com/smf/index.php?action=unread;all;start=0
It lists anything that I havent opened and read. After I read the threads/posts that interest me, I click on the "mark all messages as read" to reset (if you will) my position. I have that link set as my direct link to the board.

Thats awesome. I will use it. But its not important if I use it. Its important that rank and file members and new members have a link on the homepage to see new topics. Or why would you come back if you don't see any new topics being posted to the forum?
For some reason I don't think I'm communicating this correctly. Or its importance. I've asked for help here.
https://ufozs.com/smf/index.php?topic=799.0
Thank you for that link, SCBrian. I've bookmarked that because it certainly pulls up many, many more thread topics than when I click on "Unread Posts". So I think there's definitely something to what Moab is getting at. I miss some functions too, like being able to see the number of page views on the threads that I happen to start. I need to experiment with some of the 8 different forum themes that NT2C mentioned and see if some of those missing functions work under a different forum theme.
But let me be clear: I'm more than willing to put up with a certain level of flakiness in how these boards function. Because the alternative is (and nearly was, until NT2C stepped up) no ZS/UFoZS at all. Which would have been a damn shame. I have faith that we'll all get this sorted out eventually.

Agreed. I'm not criticizing the site. Just trying to point out things that might make your site keeping return visitors coming.
@NT2C Is there any way to have saved drafts exist forever? there is warning that they will be automatically deleted after 7 days.
I used to, and would still like to, use that as a storage for certain info that I might not like published but would like to reference. Drafts are like a private thread for only that person. Does that make sense?

It makes perfect sense, I just need to be cautious about storage space as this place grows. I can bump it to 6 months, maybe a year, but since drafts are done automatically as you type (every 30 seconds) we could quickly run out of room.
Logged in for the first time in a while and love the new layout! Keep up the great work!

I only see the drafts I've actually clicked the save button on in my saved drafts files. the automatic saves aren't in there that i can see. Are you sure they are saving all drafts every five minutes until auto deleted? How would you recover that if you can't see them in your saved draft file. What happens when you click post or cancel the window? Do they delete all drafts? cause I've done both before and those drafts didn't appear to be saved where i could access them.
Sometimes I'll start a response [i'm at work remember] in the morning and won't finish until a few hours later. At one saved draft every 5 minutes that could be 18 every 3 hours.
I just checked again to make sure and I only have three drafts including the one for this post i just saved. So any of those autosave drafts must get deleted immediately upon posting or saving the draft or cancelling the post.

It's a new feature so I'm not entirely sure how it operates but it's currently set to hold drafts for 180 days and to auto-save a draft every 30 seconds while typing a post. If you look at the lower left of the text box when typing, just below the buttons to Save Draft, Preview, and Post, it says the time the last draft was saved.
Didn't we have an option before to "bookmark" threads so we could create a list and follow a link to each one later? I'm not seeing that now.
But I've been known to miss things before so...

thanks
but those auto saved drafts are overwritten every 30 seconds I'd think and then deleted completely if the draft is posted or cancelled, so we're not generating hundreds of drafts per post that will stick around for 180. the only ones that are actually saved are the ones that we click save on.
How do you access an autosaved draft? for when i accidentally close the tab in my browser before i hit the post button and want it back?
ETA: I just checked the previous draft I manually saved on this post and it was deleted after I opened the draft and then posted it. So its not in my saved drafts anymore.
