There is a college bar area in Baton Rouge (Near LSU) that is having some street work done and a bridge over a canal was demolished to replace it. It should take a year to finish. Meanwhile there is a safe alternate route to the bars.
It seems some bar patrons have decided that the detour to the bar is just too far and have started trying to jump over or climb over the area and are getting hurt.

The official response included a quote that I nominate as award winning considering it is directed at university students attending college.
Quote
I would strongly suggest that people not jump over an area that previously had a bridge. I never imagined that we would have to say that"
Apparently the PTB now want fencing and a police presence to deter the bar patrons.

I guess expelling any LSU student injured doing this (on the grounds that SAT results not with standing they are too stupid to attend the university) is off the table.
BTW minimum drinking age is 21 and one would assume these are college juniors and seniors...(yeah, right, wink wink, no under the age of 21 at those bars)
Is it wrong for me to want to set up a CCTV camera to video this activity?
I've been saying for awhile now that we've got to stop asking how stupid can people get because some of them are starting to take it as a challenge.
Case in point, these morons trying to jump the gap instead using the other means of crossing over it.
I'd say the alcohol has something to do with the idiocy, but I get the feeling some of these folks aren't the brightest bulbs in the box even while sober. Probably the same folks who see a door that's clearly labeled "PUSH" and will then try to pull it open instead of pushing it.
"If all of your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?!" I guess we have the answer...
The worst part of this is that because everything is now recorded, shared, and commented on, what would have been a weekend of stupidity followed by some hard lessons learned will now become the next "challenge." "Likes" don't pay hospital bills, kids.
Now some poor LEO is going to get posted on that bridge in the name of public safety, and we all know how much drunken students love to have a cop in between them and their booze...
Writing this aged me about 20 years, but I don't care. I've been yelling at kids to keep off my lawn since we were all in diapers.

No, I only needed one friend to go first to confirm the water was deep enough. I didn't need them all to go.
Jumping off stuff is fun.
I didn't start drinking till I was in my 30s. I'd have been jumping over that in my late teens and early twenties just to see if I could. And I probably could have. Getting to the bar would have nothing to do with it.

I suspect they don't want any of those idiots' parents filing a lawsuit over an "attractive nuisance." I don't know that it would be successful, because IIRC the law applies to
children, not necessarily people who
act like children. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if they could get far enough with it to make a fence and police presence cheaper than the alternative.
I still think that sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads should be an acceptable alternative, but I doubt their legal eagles would agree. :tickedoff:

Yes, it is sick and wrong. I know this, because I think it sounds like a great idea--that usually means it's a very bad, not good idea.
It would be an even worse idea to build a catapult to launch them across the canal, so that they don't get hurt falling in. We
really should not do that. :awesome:
A catapult! Great idea...I could have them sign a waiver and charge them $10. That would be much better than my idea of a cherry picker with a rope dangling from the hook.
It would be glorious... video it and sell the video...between the video proceeds and cover charge I should clear enough to pay the attorneys and have a good laugh at the same time.

Crew it with bikini-clad college girls and the guys will line up.
Put a bounce house landing pad in front of each bar and the catapult on a turntable for aiming. Challenge the crew to get him in the bar on one bounce. Set up a side booth for wagers on each shot.

Get the net and crash pad right to catch them on the other side and you won't need lawyers.
I'd pay for 3 or 4 rides on that.

Oh.
We're going to have to charge extra. :smiley_chinrub:
You know, I bet we could get Joerg Sprave to come up with something that'd launch a human being across that gap. :smiley_clap:

I just thought that if Joerg did make a human launcher, he'd probably have to lower the amount of force it'd use to propel a person because we just want to get them across the gap and not launch them into the next area code. :eek1:
Though that might be interesting to watch as well. :smiley_clap:
Add in paintball guns and you could start a business called "Drunken Idiot Skeet Shooting".
Catapult, bouncy houses, net, paint ball guns.
This sounds like a fun and wholesome activity!
NOW....to get them back across, considering the majority will be intoxicated. Some will be barely on this side of being passed out.
I don't think a catapult is advisable. They wouldn't be able to climb a waterslide....trebuchet would be overkill.
Suggestions for return trip?
A brilliant additional profit center! Paintball skeet! That is why i love this site!
The creativity here is wonderful.
As for a return trip for another $10 fee plus the Uber fee we will call an Uber for them
I got a dollar that says the first moron to make it across would swallow a tide pod and then chug a pitcher of beer. :rolleyes1:

I'd pay a dollar to see that 10 times.
Ohhh that is 2 profit centers... being the bookie for side bets
on stupid acts and selling Tide Pods for $10.
I wonder if we could get Joerg Sprave to build the idiot launcher and then get the cast of Jackass to be the idiots ?

Just add the parachute and you have the most competitive sky diving company on the civilian market.

Ah, you're right. Knowing Joerg, we'd have to tone it down a little. :smiley_knipoog:
Love the skeet shooting idea.
In my late teens/early twenties I'd gladly have paid good money for that ride..
And just as much to greet my friends coming over after me with some paintballs.😁
Apart from liability issues I think that could turn a great profit..😎
