tl;dr: bacon will be more expensive in California.
Do you really think Americans will let a couple bucks a pound stand between them and bacon? :icon_crazy:
I'm sure I'm not understanding all the economics involved, but if I was a pig producing farm, I would just tell California bye Felicia and sell their portion overseas

California is a big market but then so is China. I suspect over time they will adapt but certainly short term the bacon bound for CA will wind up elsewhere. When you see it on sale in your non-CA home town buy a bunch and freeze it. That is what will happen at least short term. That or the AZ/NV/OR border towns will have "black market bacon".
This is why Gasoline, electricity and many other staple goods in CA are so much more expensive.

Meh...the better it tastes, the worse it is for you.
I'm sure it won't take too long for someone to build a California-compliant pig farm, the law was passed in 2018 so they've had three years to plan it and another 6(?) months until it comes into force.
Visitors to 4000-year-old Stonehenge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonehenge) get an excellent view of the free-range pigs as they arrive:

Edit:
Wow bacon's expensive in California already. Walmart has 12oz for $3.24 (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Bacon-Naturally-Hickory-Smoked-12-oz/23816525) (27c per oz) while the equivalent here in the UK has 10oz for £1.25 (https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/292311053) (US$1.75, 17.5c per oz).

It won't be hard, but it'll be expensive, and most farms aren't running all that much of a margin. Similar issue to organic farming: the farm has to be organic for three years before it can put on the label, which means three years of non-organic prices (about a third of what they'd get for organic produce or whatever) combined with organic yields (about a third that of non-organic farming).
Imagine if, say, someone mandated you eliminated petrochemicals from your house and you had to foot the bill. Conceptually easy: just go but an EV or two and some appliances. The time frame is longer, but the costs are also higher; so either reduced pork products shipped to California, or drastically increased prices.

Many routine commodities (Fuel, electrical power & groceries) in CA are more expensive than next door states. I agree it is doable but it adds cost to a low margin product. If the cost cannot be passed along in the form of higher prices the pork sellers will sell elsewhere.

Same way I feel about NYC. NYS has its great areas that I'd love to visit again, and I still have a stake in 40 acres with a cabin and private lake belonging to the family of an ex, but I will never set foot in the state ever again. The wackos have taken over the government there.

Back to bacon, I've tried turkey bacon, but while some of it is edible, a lot of it tries too hard to be real bacon and fails horribly at it.

I've noted the same with "faux foods". If they tried to be what they are, they're fine; but start trying to sub them for something else and they fall flat.
What comes to mind is mashed cauliflower (in place of mashed potatoes) and black bean burgers (in place of hamburger patties); both are actually pretty good, but if I ordered mashed taters and got cauliflower I'd be pretty peeved.

My big complaint with turkey bacon is that dries out my mouth when I eat it. Not sure if that's because it's so lean or what...

It could be the salt content of it.
I've found some turkey bacon is really salty. Even moreso than regular bacon.

No but my grandfather raised Gloucester Old Spots as part of the widespread effort to preserve Heritage Breeds in the UK following WW2, and I buy my pork from a farm where the pigs can be visited and seen on regular basis.

As someone who has to source alternative foods for special diets and requests, I agree completely with this.
The Walmart (Morning side farms?) "Chipolata Black bean burger" is actually quite tasty... you know. For not having meat in it... lol. I eat riced cauliflower on a regular basis. While it's a great alternative and addition wot a lot of foods, it is most definitely NOT mashed potatoes or rice. I got to try a real "Impossible Meat" burger 2 weekends ago (Not from Burger King) - we had a potluck camping and one of the girls there was vegan and wanted to know if I wanted to taste one. Not bad, but had about as much flavor as a Mcd's plain burger...

So it had zero flavor?
The only vegetarian thing I've ever tried was a vegetarian MRE I had in a box of MREs I'd gotten from a friend of my oldest sister.
It was a vegetarian version of a pork rib patty (sort of like the McRib from McDonald's). It came with BBQ sauce and I definitely needed to use that because it was pretty flavorless otherwise.
It wasn't bad, but I'm not going to be rushing out and stocking up on them, though.

You've reminded me that I bought a case of Humanitarian Daily Rations (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanitarian_daily_ration) about 15 years ago. I had a colleague who was in the US for 6 months so I had them delivered to him, then collected them when I went to visit. They were the early yellow ones, not the later pink version.
They were entirely vegetarian (but not quite vegan) and were pretty tasty. Looking at the menus they were mostly variations on "rice & beans". I'm sure I'd have got bored of them if I had to eat nothing but HDRs for months on end but a single case went quite quickly.
I had a couple of those HDRs as well, but mine were in an orange wrapper.
The accessory packets with the side dishes was the best part of the one I tried. The main dish was just awful. Not sure what it was, but it looked like something that happens after a night of Taco Bell.
Smelled the same way too, now that I think about it. :gonk:
The HDRs were vegetarian, iirc, because that meant they were also kosher and halal.
I think XMRE (can't remember who they're a brand for) still produces similar rations.

They switched the color at one point because some country or group of countries used the same color for some kind of explosive.
Someone realized it was a bad idea to basically train people to go pick up random explosive-colored items.

The basic problem isn't the treatment of the livestock, per se, but "California".
They'll implement some change which increases costs, but then whine about how much it costs to live in California.
In addition to higher expense for the farmers will be the higher expense in tracking which meat is CA compliant and which isn't. Greater complexity in distribution systems often leads to greater vulnerability.
The law impacted other types of meat as well. The pork industry is just lagging behind worse than the other types of meat.
Even with stable distribution systems, this will further strain lower income families. Double the cost of all my food and I'll be ticked, but I can afford it. Add 30% to the cost of meat for a large family already on a very tight budget, and they may be really hurting.

My platoon in the Corps went to train with eod. But really it was just an excuse to blow up an old cement rappelling tower that had fallen down. We helped them form a basketball of c4. And we flipped this massive concrete structure 100 feet in the air and then it flipped. Huge blast. Fun day.
But when we got back to our barracks. Everyone started emptying their pockets to brag about how much c4 we each had stolen. Lmao. It literally was a small coffee can full. Then these savages started to try to get small bits of it to explode. Guys were stomping on it. And all sorts of stupid shit. Nobody got a lift off. And our sgt (one of the stupid stompers) finally took it all and disposed of it. But one blasting cap and wed have had a field day! Lol.
I dont recall licking it. But im sure we all did at some point. Marines right?!!! Lol.

Lmao.
This is the first time this new place (ufozs) has felt like home. :)
Welcome home! We are glad to have you here. Put your feet up; stay awhile.

That's the back up in case the tree is occupied.
My favorite expression was always " I want to live so far back , that when I see a truck on the road five miles out . I know I have visitors coming.

I don't get the question.
If there's a sink outside, it's for cleaning birds and such.
If there's no sink, just get some more dirt on your hands to cover the germs. :icon_crazy:

Okay, but that means you're gonna have to pick it up and
fling it off the porch like any other monkey would do.
(12_Gauge_Chimp would just use the outhouse like any other

did start it this time. :-\
A dearth of bacon...so we turned the thread into a microcosm of California itself? :icon_crazy:
Nah, it just turned to a lot of shit talk :icon_crazy:
The original story said this was due to come into effect "at the beginning of next year". Is that the 1st of January 2022 or is there another date set? I've not seen one quoted.
I guess the lesson for California folk is to stock up on bacon before then, in case of supply chain disruptions and/or bacon inflation.
(Does it apply to other cuts of pork too? So perhaps stock up on those as well, if you have freezer space, in proportion to your consumption?)

Yea all pork. Actually all meat. It's Just the pork farms that have been unable (refuse ? ) to bow to the demands of one ( other)state

Fortunately, Amazon has us covered: https://smile.amazon.com/Cooked-Superior-Refrigeration-Grocery-Storage/dp/B07DGQJGCZ/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=bacon&qid=1628286485&sr=8-10

I think the other meat industries are severely struggling as well. Pork is just in the worse condition of them and "Bacon" makes for better headlines. It's also a better story if the villain is a corporate industry and not a very well intentioned law that few understood the true effect of passing. Picking out just the pork industry makes it easier for there to he one bad guy/entity. Calling out masses of well intentioned but ignorant people doesn't make for a popular news article.
If CA really pushes this hard, there is a good chance of massive impacts to food prices.
Anyone know how this impacts prepackaged processed food? Is that included in this law? The logistics of tracking which batch of hot pockets or microwave burritos are CA compliant would be insane.

Honestly, I'd hazard that no-one--at all--has really thought through the ramifications. If nothing else, people usually don't when mandating things for farming.
I mean, hell...is it restricted to food? A lot of gloves, wallets, etc are made from pigskin.

I bet a few organized crime factions have already thought it through and are already setting up distribution networks.
Uh...would a couple bucks a rasher on bacon be enough to interest orgcrime?
It's not like olive oil, where it's trivially handled at multiple points in the chain.

I have the impression less of a markup on cigarettes brings in organized crime. I used to see occasional local news stories of truckloads of cigarettes being caught at the border.
If there's an expecation of a 60% price increase if everything goes right, and near complete unavailability if it goes wrong, someone will be trying to figure out how to make money.
Now I want a comedy movie made about a bacon smuggling ring.
