Searched and couldn't find this mentioned. I see LoRa and Meshtastic but not Meshcore...
Meshcore is a competitor to Meshtastic. It uses the same hardware but works a lot better.
Meshtastic & Meshcore are systems that use fairly low-cost and low-power radios in the public band that individually have a 3 - 15 mile range but can mesh with other radios to extend your range throughout a network.
With Meshtastic you have a very friendly UI and you can see many other radios around you but you cannot talk to them and you definitely can't consistently and reliably talk to anyone. Meshcore came later, it lacks a few bells and whistles and has a slightly different philosophy that makes it much more reliable and far-reaching.
I have a repeater on my roof. When I started there was no one around. Now my repeater has six other repeaters that it can reach. I am in in the middle of Eastern Washington and can talk to the NW and SW edges of the state. On the coast, there are reports of communication from Central Oregon to beyond Vancouver BC.
The best part? You can get a small radio for about $50 and a solar-powered repeater for around $125.

Not on Meshcore at this point and even my Meshtastic devices are more for back up radio to radio if cellphone coverage goes down and I'm out and about with family or even for around the house. Even when I had my devices in Boston proper, the open primary channel was just filled with tests and random non-sensical messages.
I'd encourage you to flash a radio to Meshcore and see what you think. It takes less than three minutes and I think you'll be impressed. Of course, you can just as easily flash back to Meshtastic.
