I've got one of his books. I don't believe any of it, but the guy was a great writer. If he would have written sci fi or fantasy he could have been phenomenal. He has a very pleasant writing style mixed with just the right amount of pathos.

Pluto TV, ok, launched it, and then one of the catagories was 'Remembering Robert Duval'. I was like DID ROBERT DUVAL DIE?! One of the sales guys was there and I heard him say 'Siri, did Robert Duval Die'. OMG, he died.

What a way to find out, thru PlutoTV's catagories.  :eek1:

My Tubi app does the same thing. I'm betting by tonight there'll be one of those notices on there as well.

Last one it had was "Remembering James Van Der Beek", so I'm not sure if Tubi will add one for Robert Duvall or drop the Van Der Beek one instead.

Indulge me - this thread can make me  philosophical.  I didn't really know Eric Dane as a performer, but 53 - that's tragically young.  And ALS is a brutal, devastating disease.  Just a shitty way to die.  There was a time in my life when death was only tragic if it happened to someone in the their 20s or 30s.  As I've gotten older that "tragically young" standard has steadily advanced to the point where I now consider the death of anyone in their early sixties to be tragic.  You can probably guess why.

But one thing I've learned throughout life is to never envy someone else for their good fortune, wealth, good looks, etc.  Because you just never know.  You don't know what's going on behind closed doors in that person's home, you don't know what fate is lurking just around the corner in that seemingly charmed life.  And the corollary to that is not to feel sorry for yourself for the misfortunes you experience.  Self-pity is a f*cking cop out.  Because as bad as things might be for you - as unfair as life might seem in the moment - I guarantee you won't have to look far to find someone enduring far worse.

Carpe diem.

Now this one really makes me sad.

Sure, it's sad when someone like Robert Duvall, Eric Dane and others pass, but they had long lives.

This young man didn't. He didn't get to experience a long life like the others. Cancer made sure of that.

But despite having cancer, this young man made the best of a crappy situation. He fought the cancer bravely and  lived his short life the way he wanted. And I commend him for that.

My heart goes out to his family and they have my sincerest condolences.

My adopted APOPO rat, Ronin, passed away from sudden illness.  He held the Guiness World Record for most mines detected by a rat.

QuoteBy the end of his life, Ronin had detected 111 landmines and 16 items of unexploded ordnance. In total, he helped clear 232,060 square meters of land in Cambodia, the equivalent of nearly 900 tennis courts. Because a HeroRAT works for just 30 minutes per day, covering roughly the area of one tennis court during that time, this achievement reflects years of careful, consistent searches.

Rest in piece, little Ronin.

I am now sponsoring Imeldo, a rookie that just completed his certification in December.  He's now on the team in Cambodia.

Admin Edit: Confirmed to be Fake News

Can animals be considered Notable ?

I ask because Jonathan the world's oldest known living land animal (a Seychelles giant tortoise) passed away today at the astonishing age of 193 years old.

Apparently, Jonathan the Tortoise was hatched somewhere around 1832 thus making him around 193 or 194 years old and he possibly could've been older than that considering there's not an exact date of his birth.

Are we sure about this? I am skeptical that it might be a poor April Fool's Day joke. None of the local news on St. Helena is reporting it, the source seems to be a seldom used X Account that is "experiencing suspicious activity". Nothing on the Instagram account.

That's a good point, Uomo.

If this turns out to be a bad April Fool's joke, I'll delete this post.

ETA: So far only USA Today has posted anything about Jonathan the Tortoise being deceased. I'm seeing stuff slowly trickle in, but nothing concrete in terms of confirmation.

Probably best to wait until St. Helena Island themselves confirms it.

It appears Jonathan's Wikipedia page has scrubbed any mention of his death.

I guess Wikipedia is waiting on official confirmation of his passing before allowing updates to the page again.

Still, regardless of his passing or not, this animal lived 193/194 years and was around at the same time as some major historical events happened.

Granted, he was just an animal and likely had zero clue as to what was going on other than trying to survive, but still.

If names like "H.R. Pufnstuf" and "Land of the Lost" sound vaguely familiar, you might be a child of the 1970's.  Personally, I don't remember these all that fondly, but I can't deny they were a staple of my childhood.  Reading the article I would have sworn I most certainly never saw a live action Saturday morning TV show starring a walking, talking lump of seaweed.  But one look at the included production still brought it all rushing back.:smiley_mad:  I bet I haven't thought about that trainwreck of children's programing in a solid half century.

The best thing I can say about Marty and Sid's bizarre creations is that they must have played an unconscious role in setting me up to appreciate "Pew Wee's Playhouse" in my 20's.  Which I maintain to this day is the most ingeniusly off-kilter kids show ever produced.

Yeah, that was Muldoon's character. Think his character's name was Xander.

I remember exactly where I was when I first saw that movie. 7th grade Social Studies class in 1998 and my teacher said to the class "There's a tent scene I'll have to fast forward through, but the rest of the movie ought to be ok."

Well, the movie goes on as usual and then gets to the basic training scenes. And what is part of the basic training scenes ? Yes, the famous co-ed shower scene.

Imagine a classroom full of 13 year old boys being totally quiet as that scene unfolds. No one dared make a sound because we didn't want the teacher to look up from her grading, realize her mistake and stop the movie. Not even the class suck up said anything and that kid would rat out folks at the drop of a hat.

Finally, the scene was over and just in time too as it wasn't long after that the teacher got up to go chat with another teacher down the hall.

We'd have rewound the tape and watched that scene again had she not taken the remote with her. :smiley_crocodile:
