Title: Thought ZS was gonna become a searchable archive.
Post by: Vicarious_Lee on July 10, 2021, 03:44:03 PM
Turns out it appears to be just gone. Not the first forum I've put over a decade of work and knowledge into to do that to me.  :smiley_thefinger:

Hi guys. I'm gonna go look for the hyperinflation and housing bubble threads now...

Feel free to start them if they aren't there.

Welcome over here from there.  Yeah, I bookmarked a shite ton of threads to sue as reference, but so far they only lead to THE END page.

In some ways I think you could argue that it's already here, we just didn't notice it creeping in.

Within my lifetime I've seen a pack of cigarettes go from 17¢ to over $10.00.  I've seen a loaf of bread go from 15¢ to almost $5.00, and a gallon of milk from 25¢ to almost $3.00.  Hell, I used to sell gasoline for less than 50¢ per gallon in the late 80s (and made a penny or two profit while taxes took 35¢) and watched it climb to over a dollar in just a couple of years.  (I managed the station for two years before buying it and then selling it again 4 years later when all the dispensers had to be replaced, along with the pumps and in ground tanks because the old dispensers wouldn't go past $0.99.9 per gallon)

Then again, my brand new IBM PC back then cost me almost $2,000, with a 10MB HD...

I don't know what the UK is like, but housing costs are sure increasing in the US, and land costs. I don't know that San Francisco is experiencing what is happening locally, but house costs seem to be up 50% to 100% over 14 months ago. And food prices seem to be increasing. But I think my location is more resistant to food price increases and more sensitive to rises in demand for housing/land.

Mine's the same.  We had a combination of inflated property taxes and people fleeing the city to work remotely, which has caused a drastic rise in land prices.

I'll admit that the property taxes particularly annoy me, because I don't think people should be taxed on money they don't actually have.  :p  So some farm that's making about the same now as it did 10 years ago is suddenly paying far higher taxes because a subdivision went in, so the "value" of the land per acre is up?  :tickedoff:

Totally agree, but it is certainly escalating.  A friend is looking for a boat and all three dealers he visited yesterday were sold through future deliveries through next spring.  As well, the one brand that that has announced 2022 models have prices up 11 - 13% over 2021 prices, which represents an increase of around 30% over 2017 MRSP.  It's the same as when I was shopping gun safes back in the spring- prices up 20% *and* pay now to get one in 6 months.  As products become less available we will see prices jump a fair bit all at once.  Maybe they will come down in a year or two, or maybe those prices will hold once they are established.  Does anything think we will see primers back below $30 a thousand ever again?  I bet prices stabilize at $40 or $45 once the shortness is over.

On topic, it is a shame that ZS isn't going to show up in search results now.  There was some really great information there, especially from people like Woods Walker who isn't with us anymore to recreate.
