Given that the Chinese (and Russians to a lesser extent) have some [color=var(--primary-700)]Really Big LASERS (https://freebeacon.com/national-security/satellite-photos-show-chinese-anti-satellite-laser-base/)[/url] (tm) that many see as a threat to US space systems, what to do if they start potting our space systems?[/font][/size][/color]
The links above point to new series of USAF/Space Force funded projects that will improve HF over the horizon communication (digital or voice) via atmospheric heating. Yes, that HAARP stuff turns out to be useful after all.
The focus of the early testing of the ETSS system is the use of existing HF and V/UHF radio systems. At some point I expect 'something' will be released on the success of this testing - if only the announcement of a long-term contract award.

What is this?
This system (ETSS) takes NVIS to a new level by 'enhancing' selected parts of the ionosphere to improve propagation of the HF and V/UHF spectrum. See links for more.
What we would see (civilian use) is the possible development of related NVIS support equipment or modulation techniques that could be released into the wild - for our use.
Posted for those interested in alternative communications via HF. If these systems come into widespread use, we may be able to 'piggyback' on the improved propagation for our own use.
