Title: Power Screwdriver for Small Electronics
Post by: NT2C on January 20, 2025, 05:23:23 PM
I decided to splurge a little this year and start the year off right with an expensive gift for myself, a $70 power screwdriver and bit set that boggles the mind.

It comes in a nifty plastic crate that is held closed with powerful magnets and even has a slot to put a power cord through to keep the driver charged.  The driver has 3 torque settings and a manual mode, and more than 160 bits!  There's security bits I've never seen before.  There's a freaking prybar bit.  There's drill bits and easyouts in here I could use on eyeglass screws.

Kind of reminds me of something you'd see in a space movie.

Well, you could screw just about anything with that.

Somehow looks reminiscent.

For those of us who may be interested in procuring a set for ourselves, any chance of a link for it, NT2C?

Neat.

Now I know what I'm buying myself once tax returns come in.

There's a silver version for $49.99 with a 30% coupon and a 15% redemption code. $34 net.

But it doesn't look like that second code is applying.

I'd been looking at sets like this, so I spent some time poking around after NT2C posted. There are a ton of this same set on Amazon from a bunch of different companies (same product, different name/logo, and the color choices are either white, gray, or black).  The other night I found one from a company called "Jakemy" (https://a.co/d/3mKUkrt) that had an Amazon 1-hour deal on it that cut the price in half.  So I went ahead and ordered it before the deal expired.

It just came this evening, and so far it seems to be fairly decent.  There was one bit that was damaged, but it's one where there are multiples of it, so it's not that big of a deal.  The retention on the bits when they're stored is really good other than the four long ones that are next to the extension rod - those keep falling out.  The tweezers are good and come to a really fine point (less than 1mm), but it's a bit of a pain to pry them out of their slots in the case!

I had a few radio belt clips to install and it worked really well for that.  The magnet that holds the bits in place also magnetizes them enough that it would hold the screw in place.  Then I could use my other hand to hold the clip in place on the radio (the spring on the clip meant that I had to use some force to hold it flat).  Hit the button on the screwdriver and a few seconds later it's all set!  Woohoo!

This is really good for detailed work, but I do want to get a larger battery screwdriver too.  For that, I'm trying to decide between the Amazon Basics (https://a.co/d/b51k001) or the Dremel (https://a.co/d/c4KeNp3), which are generally neck and neck in various YouTube reviews of these kind of cordless screwdrivers.  For heavy duty stuff I've got several impact drivers that will drive screws into wood all day long.
