Title: Need help? Best 2 man tent under $77?
Post by: Moab on September 25, 2024, 10:09:36 PM
I need a second 2 man tent.

Party of four. Two couples sort of thing. Could get a new 4 man. But I already have an ok 2 man (Marmot full rain fly with vestibules both sides. 5lbs.). And two 2 man tents would be more private. Also easier to share weight.

Saw this tent on sale for $77. Similar quality to my Marmot 2 man.

What out there is better than this for the price?

It certainly ticks a lot of boxes that qualify it as good tent.  Full coverage rainfly, vestibule, ample ventilation, aluminum poles, freestanding and 3000mm pu waterproofing.  I do like how the sidewalls are nearly vertical halfway up before they start to arch towards the tent peak.  That means a lot more of the floorspace is usable, something you don't get in tents with steeply sloping walls.

Do note however: Klymit charges about $26 shipping.  Still, a little over $100 out the door for what appears to be a quality 2p tent sounds like a bargain to me.

I like that it's wider/taller too. But thank you for pointing out shipping. That sucks. Now I feel like I need to compare it to other tents in the $100 category. Maybe even open box.

Got any recommendations in that category? $100 otd, full rain fly, vestibule, not over 5lbs?

Amazon has spoiled us all with Prime free shipping.  To the point of passing up on legitimate good deals even after accounting for the additional cost other vendors charge for shipping.

I also forgot to point out that the Navigator edition of that Cross Canyon range is low profile grey, rather than the more bright and conspicuous colors of their normal Cross Canyon tents - if that's a consideration to you.

I checked slickdeals.net for other tent deals.  Nothing currently that comes close and looking back the past few months I see there were deals on an REI 3P and and a Marmot 2P, but both were over twice as much, before any shipping costs.

I can't personally vouch for Klymit because I've never used their tents.  But this one sure looks like a good buy.  If you need something now for that couples camping trip you mentioned, I think you should strongly consider this and put any thoughts of finding something marginally better/cheaper behind you.

FYI: Found this page (https://coupons.slickdeals.net/klymit/) of potential Klymit coupon codes.  Those sorts of things don't often work for me, but you might get lucky.

I found this slightly used 2 man tent for sale on craiglist; conveniently located, it includes the property, 5 gallon bucket [outdoor], and cartage for only 1 eight ball and $5 cash. Owner is highly motivated and available for a FTF showing between 2am and 2:15 each day PST. Apparently they are relocating for 1-3 yrs for reasons.  :smiley_shrug: Eff Amazon.

I bought the Klymit. I looked too. Nothing close pricewise. Had I caught the 4 man version before it sold out I might have bought one of those too.

They have a couple really nice sleeping bags onsale too.

I saw that. The HOA fees are stiff tho.
