I know we have another thread on the topic, but things are ramping up here as we get closer to April 8th, and not in a good way.
As I have mentioned, I live in a rather remote town/village of 2,200 people. The town of Pittsburg, 12 miles up Route 3, has 800 people.
The powers that be are estimating our tourist influx for this event to be between 10,000 and 60,000. That's the highs and lows, so we figure it will be somewhere in the middle.
Every cabin, hotel/motel room, rv space, campground, B&B room, Air B&B, spare room, etc. has been rented out for the event. In a 50 to 100 mile radius.
We have a 12 bed hospital. No surgical suite or surgeons, because surgical patients are sent south to a hospital that has surgeons 45 minutes away. And that one has limited capacity.
We have no real jail. We have a holding cell. Capacity: ONE.
We have (counting county sheriff, etc) less than a dozen LEOs. Our newest hires are 23 yrs old, fresh outta the academy, and 58 yrs old, fresh into retirement from his previous job. (But as the girls say, dey both cute!)
Now....here we go.
The governor is sending up a couple dozen state troopers, county sheriffs, fish and game people (they have power of arrest in NH) to assist. Newest announcement, also National Guard folks.
The local PD has already acquired air mattresses and cots to put in our tiny town hall and police station (same building) for some of these guys to sleep. Also, local LEOs are being asked to open their homes to accommodate the added personnel.
Where the hell are we going to put National Guard people?
Looks like it might be the local school. We have K thru 12 in one building. (Average graduating senior class here is 14 to 17 students)
We are quietly going a little crazy up here.
I will keep everyone updated on local efforts.
If you are in the path, please update here as well.
Don't worry about where to put the National Guard people, that's their lookout and they have the gear to set up camp on any empty space they can commandeer.

Uhmmmmm...not a lot of empty space around here. People are renting out their yards for this, lol!

They can commandeer state and/or local public property. Like school gyms, exercise fields, etc.
Not me, but my parents and my brother's family are in the path of totality. However, they're in a major metro area (Dayton, OH), so there is much more in the way of local services, spread out across the area. They've still been warned to fill up and get food ahead of time, as they are expecting somewhere in the range of 150,000 - 575,000 visitors coming to Ohio to view the eclipse.
I'm planning to head down there to see it and will be staying overnight with my parents. Right now I'm leaning toward taking my Suburban. It gets worse mileage than my car, but has a much larger fuel tank and can almost make the entire round trip on a single tank (almost exactly 400 miles round trip) if needed. That gives me a lot more leeway when finding somewhere to fill up if it becomes an issue.
The real trick will be getting home afterwards. My route is extremely straightforward, as 99% of it is on I-75 (I'm not far from that highway in Michigan and my parents are only about a mile away from the exit in Ohio). But that's also the main route that everyone from Michigan will be using for travel to see the eclipse. I may either leave fairly late (like 7-8 at night, for a 3-hour trip) or map out a route that avoids the main freeways. Toledo is a bit of a snarl anyway, but US-23 might be a good alternative. On the day, I might wait a bit, then let Google do its thing to recommend a route!
I don't quite live in the path of totality but I'm pretty close. I have a friend who has a camp further north that is. She's invited a bunch of us to stay there for a few days so we can view the event. The camp is pretty primitive so we're considering it a camping weekend. Maybe closer to glamping. Aside from the traffic going up and coming back, I'm not expecting too much drama.
Perhaps I'm being naive. I'm kind of surprised that someone hasn't announced this is connected to the Mayan calendar or the rapture or something. It always seems like there are plenty of gullible people perfectly willing to follow anyone who commands them to sell off all their worldly possessions, disown their families and gather on a hilltop somewhere to await the arrival of the mothership.

We're not in the path of totality. And Acu-weather forecast is for strong to severe thunderstorms on the 8th. So it will probably end up looking like the end of the world around here

Actually....yeah, there are conspiracy theories in abundance out there. I've heard the Rapture one, a nuclear war one (eclipse will knock out all the satellites so launches won't be detected), power will go out for 3 days/3 months/years...I have heard all the BS, unfortunately not all online. Some locals are really *into* some of these theories....sigh...

Oh, you don't hang out with the, uh, right? people.
There are several who believe the total eclipse will somehow last for four days across the entire line of totality (some say three days). They have various ideas of what that means or why it will happen, but many agree that it will happen.
Alex Jones claimed that this is Biblical, that the line of totality passes through every US city named Nineveh (it doesn't; it will pass over maybe two of eight), and that the eclipse is a sign from God that Homeland Security will interfere in some Biblical event. Or this Biblical event? I'm not really clear on that point.
Some are associating the extreme storms and natural disasters we have experienced either with the upcoming eclipse or this eclipse coupled with the last one that will be creating an X across the country. Some say something massive will occur at the point where the lines cross in Carbondale, Illinois.
Many have said that some cataclysmic event will occur in Carbondale to usher in the end of the world. This theory is bolstered on the Biblical theory side by the fact that the area is commonly knows as "Little Egypt". If you have even a passing understanding of the Bible's relation to Egypt, I'm sure you can imagine the thought process there.
One theory along these lines is that Nibiru, a (fictitious) small planet, will crash into the Earth at that point. This was a theory posed about the 2017 eclipse, but further bolstered this time around by that convenient X marking the spot in Carbondale.
Another theory says that the movie
Leave the World Behind was not just fiction, but a warning about this solar eclipse (never mind that the movie featured a lunar eclipse) and that a mass human sacrifice event will begin in Carbondale
.Some pointed out that there were earthquakes along the New Madrid Fault in the Mississippi Valley months after the 1811 eclipse and claim that means that this eclipse will cause more earthquakes along the New Madrid Fault.
On a lesser scale, there have been those referring to the Mayan belief that a solar eclipse will usher in the end of the world in an event in which spirits of the dead in the form of jaguars will emerge and consume the living. This theory is further bolstered among US theorists by the appearance of another jaguar in Arizona. There have been eight distinct jaguars identified in the wilds of the US since the 90s. They're coming to eat us for the eclipse!
I'm sure there are many, many more theories. These are just the ones that I have encountered that, once posted, were lent credence by commenters confirming their belief in said theory and that have been repeated by different individuals.

There has been a split lately on whether the lizard people are positive or negative. Used to be a pretty clear delineation that The Cabal of evil (political leaning) politicians and celebrities were the lizard people and that was bad. Lately, there has been a shift to using the all powerful lizard people to explain how the (other political leaning) people were gaining access to advance technology, especially medbeds that are going to heal us all of everything. So now there is a sizeable portion of conspiracy theorists who love the lizard people and certain other alien species for gifting us their advanced technologies.
It can be challenging to keep up with the shifting narrative, but it is entertaining while also enraging that a lot of it is a grift preying on the desperate and ignorant.
My wife's hometown (3k+ a bit) was dead middle for the recent annular eclipse.
What a giant clusterhump! Thousands showed up.

Indeed.
With the massive influx of out-of-towners coming in, my feeling is the local tow truck companies are going to be pretty busy dealing with the ones that get stuck.
Busy to the point that folks will be waiting hours for a tow and that's where Billy Joe Jim Bob with his John Deere will come in.

Some things to consider:
1) We only have 5 tow trucks within about....uhmmm...a 40 mile radius.
2) Tractors cost a shit-ton more than the average car.
3) Trust me when I say priority will be given to locals.
4) If they get stuck in the wrong area of our lovely county, that pricey I-phone is going to be less useful than a Nokia *brick* burner phone from a 7-11. We do not have full coverage up here.
5) We have ONE cab up here. Not a "cab company", ONE CAB! Driven by a grumpy old guy named Craig. The cab does not have a meter. In town, one way, 7 bucks. Need to get to Boston? That's $600 and Craig needs to stop by hs house to let his wife know before he leaves. Uber and Lyft do not exist up here, deal with it.

Remember how I told you we had the only EV charger for about 70 miles or so?
Somehow, while we were all working today, somebody either hit it or purposely vandalized it, exposing a lot of the wiring and circuitry. With a huge storm moving in. Exposed wiring & circuits + heavy, wet snow and high winds = a bad thing. So, our bagging crew and night manager ran out with....massive rolls of shrink wrap (from the meat room), bungee cords, duct tape and straps and effected a protective cover of sorts for the charger. But it is not operational. :panic:
Calls have been made to get a repair crew up here right damn now, but the nearest crew is in Concord, or possibly Burlington---maybe. Both are hours away, though Burlington is closer. The governor is in the loop about this and is trying to get us a crew.

The temperature dropped like a rock this evening (around 4 to 5 pm) and it started spitting snow. I left work at 7. I have the next two days off, though I am on the "call in if needed" board.
The storm is supposed to go from tonight until Saturday.
Sunday will be clearing with temperatures up to 50.
Monday is clear and sunny with highs up to 53.
According to NOAA and the Weather Channel, the best viewing in the US will be....right here.
Woke up to around 8-10 inches of snow, with it still coming down.
Just texted the following to a friend who lives nearby here in rural Maine:
When do you suppose it ever made sense to have power lines above ground and exposed to predictably snowy weather in northern climates?
I didn't even bother asking him IF he also lost power. This nor'easter isn't supposed to let up until sometime Friday. That'll be the earliest it'll be safe to send out the line crews. Sigh. In-house temp still 52.8 deg here in the living room - warmest spot in my house. I'll fire up the Buddy Mr Heater (really starting to love that little guy) when it drops below 50 deg.
Fun fact: it doesn't have to be 32 degrees to be cold enough to see your breath ...

I will guarantee there's an onsite generating plant, if not as primary power then as backup, and overhead wires leading to its immediate vicinity.
Berlin receives snowfall for 27.7 days throughout the year, and the snow accumulates up to a depth of 4.8 inches
Paris March signals the end of regular snowfall in Paris and records ab accumulation of 0.12 inches (3 millimeters) after 0.6 snowfall days.
Thanks to London's maritime climate, its typical temperature is fairly mild throughout the winter.
It doesn't often snow in Amsterdam. If it does, it's usually in December and January. And the snow melts almost immediately after it touches the ground.
Officially, the period during which Vienna Austria gets snow is between November 15th and March 15th. Snow can occur before this or after this, but it is much less likely.

Interesting update...
They viewed the video from yesterday and saw NOTHING suspicious. No vehicle impact, no vandalism, nada.
So, nothing from the past 24 hours.
We did have high wind gusts yesterday and the day before. So, there's that.
And they are going to review the video from Tuesday as well.

I was thinking more along the lines of a pissed off Sasquatch.
Think about it, dude's going to have a whole bunch of morons traipsing about his woods in the lead up to the eclipse.
And we all know how douchebaggy some folks can be and leave a bunch of trash behind for others to deal with. Wouldn't surprise me if some out-of-towner dumps trash in the woods and ends up coming face to stomach with Bigfoot himself.
The latest among certain corners of the nuttery is that it's a government conspiracy that we're being told not to look directly at the sun without proper protective eye wear. The primary argument seems to be along the lines of "The sun is healing, not damaging" and "They're just worried the truth will be revealed and we'll be able to see the edges of the firmament." I wonder if anybody will be tracking incidents of event-related vision damage.
In related news, if you didn't manage to get properly rated glasses for the event, NASA did put out data comparing welding masks and have indicated that welding masks rated 12 or better can be worn to view the eclipse. Sunglasses and lesser-rated protective eye wear will not sufficiently protect from UV damage, which is essentially getting a sunburn in your eye, which can cause permanent damage.

I've had chili that was worse. What really hurts is getting one on the other side.
I picked up some glasses for the eclipse and tested them the best way I know how - with one of my flashlights! If I can barely see one of those through the lens, it should be strong enough for the sun! :shades:

Maybe. This issue is more the UV spectrum than the visible spectrum. If you got them from one of the trusted sources and the rating is listed on them, they're good. Problem is that the rating can be listed on counterfeits and the counterfeits can appear pretty dark. Trusted sources carry ones that are specifically tested and rated.
Sadly, there are going to be some people who think they are protected who are going to be staring at the big ball of fire in the sky and taking UV damage because some shady jerks wanted a few bucks.

Before I even ordered them, I checked to make sure that they were on the approved list, and once they arrived, I confirmed that they do have the rating info printed on them as well. However, I'd also read a recommendation to test them by holding the glasses up to a light bulb to confirm that they're blocking almost all of the light. That's where I decided that an extremely bright flashlight (brighter than the bulb, and has all of the light directed in one way rather than 360-degrees) would be an even better final test.
But to your point about UV - I can test that too!
How? By using my UV flashlight (duh, of course I have one of those!) to see if I can get things to fluoresce through the glasses! An easy target is anything with an LED in it, as the chips have phosphor material on the emitter which responds to UV light. Went down in the basement, where I have those newly-installed LED lights in my shop, held the glasses over the flashlight and turned it on. Nothing. Take the glasses away and all of the LEDs glowed bright orange. Seems like they're good to go!
Lamykins it sounds like it's going to be an eventful few days. I hope most people in the path of the totality will remain rational, and if they can't that they'll be stuck in the mud somewhere far away from you all :clownshoes:
Sadly with all the rotten weather here I doubt the partial eclipse will be noticeable. We've got Storm Kathleen due to arrive tomorrow but that'll just be yet more horizontal rain ☔️

Probably not as eventful as those who will be visiting Lambytown. Their stories will be handed down for generations. " Grandma, tell us the story again of the candle throwing Viking woman the day the sun went dark. "

Well, we've got totality here in Texas and so far there's been zero reports of idiocy other than what usually happens in my town.
I would like to state officially that the telescope in Mesquite, TX is superior to any of the others. Most of them are just showing a halo, but the one in Mesquite was good enough to see the dancing of the corona.
Looks like were getting about 3/4 here in SE FLORIDA.
Got a decent pic of a sundog of the eclipse. And then we get these weird crescents under palm trees.
Cloud watching with sudden unexplained darkness complete in WNY. I only took my eclipse glasses out of the wrapper for a pre-eclipse photo with the neighbors. Totally overcast and you couldn't see the sun before the eclipse.
People here didn't get too stupid, a few accidents, some fights, some bushes set on fire with fireworks - almost a typical day. Most exciting report was for a "naked woman in a field." No terrorist attacks, alien invasions, zombie outbreaks, rabid goose attacks or anything else nefarious.
Still no report from Lamby. Might be time to pass the hat for her bail. :panic:
At the risk of annoying the cynics, we had spectularly clear, cloudless skies. Wow. Seeing it partial through eclipse glasses is NOTHING like taking them off during totality and looking right at it with your naked eyes. A freaking gigantic hole in the heavens, surrounded by flame. Think Eye of Sauron. Awe-inspiring yet vaguely unsettling at the same time. The sky suddenly full of stars, with Venus being particularly bright. And a full, 360 deg sunset all around us, as if the sun had just settled below the horizon, everywhere and all at once. I'm still a little drunk from the experience.

It was magnificent. Incredible. When I took off my eclipse glasses and viewed the totality...I got chills. The hair stood up on my neck and arms.
I'll write more on Wednesday night. Tonight I'm tired. No bail required.
It just looked like someone turned a dimmer switch on the sun and it got dim here.
Agree with the above about seeing the totality. Even my dad, who was skeptical that it was worth all the fuss, said afterwards that it was really impressive and that he was glad that we'd gotten the chance to see it.
The most surprising bit for us was how little you really noticed the reduced light, until the very last moment. Even when just about 10% was showing, it looked almost normal. But the shift at the last moment is really fast, like someone is rapidly turning down the dimmer switch on a light. We did notice the temperature drop (it went down about 7F) and the birds all went quiet as it got to the full eclipse. And then after a couple of minutes, the dimmer switch goes the other way and it's suddenly brightening back up.
Almost every house around my parents' place had people out watching it and there were probably 40-50 people at the playground across the street. No craziness, just lots of families and people sitting out in their yards and driveways to watch it.
Traffic in the area wasn't a problem - until I tried to get back home that evening. I don't know what the final count was, but a LOT of people from Michigan headed down into Ohio for the eclipse. I gave things several hours to clear out and then left to drive home around 6:30 last night. Google claimed that the drive was only a few minutes longer than normal, but that turned out to be wildly inaccurate!
The drive is usually right around 3hrs. If I'd continued to follow Google's directions, it probably would've been around 6hrs... Fortunately, mid-way through the enormous jam, I gave up on Google and pulled out of the huge line of cars (many miles long, going through a bunch of surface roads to try and cut off a section of the highway route that was jammed up) to take a different route. The drive home still took about 4.5 hrs, but once I did that, traffic lightened up significantly. The route that I picked went around even more of the snarl on the highways so that when I finally re-entered the highway, it was moving at normal speed.
While I wasn't familiar with the area that I was in (it's a fairly rural area about 60 miles south of me), knowing a few of the major roads in the area let me escape the mess! One of the drawbacks of something like Google is that it can end up creating it's own jams, when it recommends a specific route to thousands of people! Yes, there might be something even worse that it's trying to route you around, but by striking out on your own, you can avoid the worst of it!
And because it's a thread about the eclipse, here's a picture at totality, with Venus on the right side and a very faint Jupiter off to the left:
Eclipse_planets.jpg
And already seeing anecdotal reports of potential UV eye burns around social media. It's boggling how many people think they should consult randos online rather than a doctor of some sort for their clearly medical malady.
Fortunately for a lot of these people, if it's just a burn, it will heal with just an increase in risk for further eye ailments like certain cancers. Some of these people will experience permanent injury.

My youngest son came over after work complaining that his boss kept making him stop working to come look at the eclipse (he gave him viewing glasses to look through). He was completely disinterested and just wanted to get the planting done. He is a strange child.

Most wandered in to buy a sandwich or drink, but it never got crowded. In fact, it was slower than most Mondays.
