Title: Help me understand this house
Post by: flybynight on December 29, 2023, 08:41:56 AM
Was just perusing Zillow and found this oddity. It kinda grows on you but just can't figure out the design

It looks like someone built a huge covered porch all the way around an old house and then decided to enclose it.  Maybe it's the realtor who called it a "greenhouse" (maybe that's just due to the color!) as a way to try to describe it.  The amount of light that it'll get won't be great though, since it's only through the windows and not the roof/ceiling.  I had to look at the satellite view and this house is at a 45-degree angle, so that the main picture is actually the northeast side of the property.  That means that a large portion of the daylight that will enter is actually being blocked by the "garage" extension on the southeast.

Given the very rough condition of the house, I'd guess that the main value for this listing is the land itself.  I like weird homes (and this would definitely qualify), but that would probably be far too much for me to consider, particularly with that price.

looks like a good place to train your Komodo dragons indoors. Sort of an indoor mote, fill with attack dragons to keep people out of your living area

I was thinking that this was an attached stables or shed on the left.

It almost looks like a former drive in restaurant to me. That window looks like where the  carhops picked up the food...and look at all the parking spaces...huh.

I was going to say stables too, but the interior pic looks more like a Church Fellowship Center.
When I was a young Southern Baptists We'd have revival dinners, church council meetings and such.
Not too common nowadays though.

Someone did not like the rain, sun, or bugs. Or all three. Lol. Weird. The enclosure looks well built. I mean it's not flimsy. But why spend all that money on such a huge covered area? And not just extend the house?

At least its 76 acres. When I first saw the orice I thought wth?!

Several people I know are looking to buy a house. But everyone is waiting for this crash. I follow several areas on the west coast including WA and MT. And I see very few properties selling. Homes for sale are being reduced. But only by small margins. And still not selling.

What is your interest in this property flybynight?

If you could seal off the entire porch with plastic it would create a larger space from nuclear issues. Aren't there a bunch of nukes in KS?

It's Kansas.  I'd say it was intended as a grow space protected from storms and hail.  There are benches under the windows for smaller planters and a larger space between the benches and walkways for large planters.  That was a green space that probably stocked those many shelves.

They are all in private possession now  as doomsday bunkers.  Haven't seen one go up for sale in a year or two. There's two within ten miles of my house.  One of my former supervisors lived in one for a couple years .

As for that property, I just ran across it looking at properties for sale under the sub search 50 acres minimum . It would take a super low price on a perfect piece of real estate for me to move.  But I still look . That one caught my eye because it seemed so odd

I'd love to have some acreage out here, but anything worth it has either been bought up already and divided into smaller parcels or is owned by the various oilfield companies in my AO.

I've followed a few areas for years. Which is super easy with Zillow. And the only way to be confident when a deal comes up.

That happens out west with logging companies. I have tried in the past to buy property already logged. But no success.

There are no good deals now. I only see properties cheaper than others but still stupid expensive.

It's way more expensive than about ten years ago.  I remember one south of Abilene selling for 150k and one North of Abilene selling for about 75k.  The northern one still had the control board for launching the missiles.  Yea don't know if I mentioned it before but there was other cold war relic hardened underground structures. For telecommunications and such. They were never as large as the missile sites but still much larger than normal houses. Normally in much better condition also. ( and less prices also)

ETA I just looked again and those all seem to have sold out also

I could totally see them all bought up right now. Makes total sense.

That's amazing they are so cheap. I wonder if at this point everyone knows about them and their location. Might they get overrun with people looking for help?

They are all in private possession now  as doomsday bunkers.  Haven't seen one go up for sale in a year or two. There's two within ten miles of my house.  One of my former supervisors lived in one for a couple years .

As for that property, I just ran across it looking at properties for sale under the sub search 50 acres minimum . It would take a super low price on a perfect piece of real estate for me to move.  But I still look . That one caught my eye because it seemed so odd
I've followed a few areas for years. Which is super easy with Zillow. And the only way to be confident when a deal comes up.
Just saw another one come up for sale. Nows your chance Moab

Seems to lack curb appeal...
Lmao! Ya. The landscaping needs some work. ;) That aluminum siding us a bit dated!

Makes you wonder how much more it would be to set up water, power, supplies, infrastructure etc. I don't know if I read what infrastructure is already there? They did a decent job of setting up living room and kitchen. I wasn't expecting that. Someone out some money into it recently. Looked be a decent leak as well.

I think you'd be better off to build one of those quanset hut/sprayed cement units. On your already established land. Iirc this guy built this one for 50k. Its a just a quanset hut, sprayed over with cement, and buried into a hillside. It's not completely protected from nuclear fallout. But I guess you could set up a real fallout shelter beneath it. Prior to building the main unit.

They warn you should never bury a shipping container as it will collapse from the weight of the dirt. They aren't designed for it. I think the Quonset might have the same problem.
When we were looking at houses to move here, I remember two that were actually bunkers. The one was a brick ranch house . Right in the middle of 20 acres.  With two levels of basement below it.  It was even described as a doomsday bunker. The other home was on seven acres and all you could see was a small wooden shed. In the shed was a metal door with stairs leading down to a underground three bedroom, two bath home. 2005/06 prices were 165k for the first and 74k for the underground home.

Its a pretty popular thing to use the huts and containers. That first hut I posted has been used for like 10 yrs.
