I just finished chatting with the owner of our hosting company and gave him the okay to upgrade our system server and get us a few more resources, like storage space. The move will happen tonight, Sunday the 3rd of December 2023. The system may be offline for an extended period during this move. If you can't reach the site for up to 24 hours don't freak out, it will be coming back, it just takes time for the new server address to filter out on the internet.

Give Lambykins a call. She has experience with cleaning up a hoarders house . No candles allowed though
Let me pack up all my scissors.
No candles or scissors allowed!

Meant to say "See you on the other side" last night.
Are we on the other side? Or is this all a dream?
Yes, you're dreaming Major.
The move did not go as planned last night and we're on hold until the datacenter gets something worked out. Matt had a drive replaced on that server and the new drive was giving indications it was about to fail. All transfers to that machine were halted while they troubleshoot the issue.
Posted to my account at 0230 today:
QuoteOk, everything is checking out now with the new drive, and I will be performing the migration tomorrow night. I will keep you updated here in this ticket.

That was weird.
I just got a " account has been suspended, contact your service provider" message when coming to this site. Only for a few tries.

Sorry Mac. The tribe has spoken.
Annnnddd... we're moved. :awesome:
QuoteHi Bernie,
Your account has now been relocated to the Saturn server. Updated login details have been sent to your email on file, and the only changes necessary should be to adjust the hostname for your mail client (and other service connections) if you were previously using neptune.geekstorage.com as the hostname, you will need to use saturn.geekstorage.com instead. Your hosted IP is now: 162.249.125.183. If you run into any issues or have any questions please let us know.

Now, if y'all will excuse me, I have to go fix a bunch of mail clients on a shitload of devices, for over 20 accounts each. :headbang:
Hold it... Okay, we moved (Mac caught us mid-move) but we haven't upgraded yet. The upgrade happens tonight, The move was to just get us on a machine with the correct hardware for the upgrade.
And we're moving again, and maybe once more after that. Matt is trying to get us to a machine with more room. In the meantime, I'm considering upgrading us to a full-fledged VPS (Virtual Private Server) that will allow us to have better control. It's also about 8x the cost of our current server. :gonk:
What percentage of registered forum members are making a financial contribution? Maybe we could have a membership drive to raise a bit of capital to help pay for the migration.
And help members feel more invested in UFOZS. People always care more if they have skin in the game.

No. From the very start this place has been free, with
zero pressure for anyone to make any kind of financial contribution, and it will always remain that way. Such a drive would violate one of the founding principles of this place, that the best contribution people can make is to share their knowledge, not their money.
Yes, a VPS would be more expensive than what we have now, but that doesn't mean exorbitant, just more than what we pay now. One of my monthly SSI checks would cover the cost for a year and I enjoy using my SSI as fuel to purchase gear for our contests and other site-related costs. People that really do want to contribute to our "war chest" can do a little looking around in their profile to find links to make such gifts,
but they are not, and never will be needed to keep the lights on.

I second this sentiment with the caveat that "never is a long time".
Participation is welcome and we do get contributions. These are always welcome.
