Title: MOD Ready to Support (Replace) Armed Police in London
Post by: Z.O.R.G. on September 25, 2023, 06:26:23 AM
Chris Kaba: MoD offers military support after armed Met officers turn in weapons - BBC News (https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-66906201)

Military and police have very different missions, use of force usually what soldiers are trained for - not civil policing.  Hopefully this won't go sideways...

IMHO, it's already gone sideways if we're even discussing this.

If they get rid of the police, there will be no police shootings.

If there's ever a need for a raid of a bad guy's place, military has a distinctly different method of clearing rooms too.

I chuckled reading this. They sure do. My brother was with the 101st Airborne in Iraq. He said they were being used as police lots of the time.

"We're great soldiers, but not great cops. We don't want to man checkpoints or make sure the garbage trucks are running their routes on time. We want to break down doors and kill bad guys."

It's been said here already but you don't want your police for your military, and you don't want your military for police.

I believe that's mostly true...  I believe National Guard troops operating under state active duty (Title 32) can be used to augment the local police.  We were working directly with local LEO in the days post 9-11 and had authorization for use of force and to detain individuals.  Local LEO were to be called in to make any arrests.

On the other hand, in the days immediately following, maybe no one cared if we weren't following the letter of the law.  If so, doesn't mean it couldn't happen again.

In the US if the National Guard is under control of the Fed they have to take orders from the POTUS. This doesn't mean that they can't enforce Federal Law. If they are under control of the State then they can enforce State Laws. This only applies to the National Guard as the Regular Army is NEVER under the control of the state.
