Title: NPR joins the prepping bandwagon
Post by: majorhavoc on August 26, 2023, 07:42:29 PM
When National Public Radio starts doing serious pieces on putting together your own disaster preparation go-bag, you know prepping's gone mainstream.

https://www.npr.org/2023/08/24/1195621892/a-go-bag-is-an-essential-tool-during-natural-disasters-heres-how-to-build-your-o (https://www.npr.org/2023/08/24/1195621892/a-go-bag-is-an-essential-tool-during-natural-disasters-heres-how-to-build-your-o)

Quote"Being prepared for any type of emergency or disaster can make the difference between life and death," Sherri McKinney [Red Cross national spokesperson] added. "We can't stress that enough. Have a plan, have a kit, and know how to evacuate your area."

Just one question: organic kidney beans and Trader Joe's reduced fat coconut milk, I get - it's NPR.  But why Himalayan pink salt????

Himalayan salt won't go bad like new salt.  It's proven the test of time.  It has mystic properties and make sherpas so bad ass!

Everybody's doing pink salt now, haven't you heard?  White salt is so out of fashion.

What's in the DeWalt case?  I would assume chainsaw, but it doesn't quite look like a chainsaw case.  I could be wrong.

It occurs to me that I no longer have a strap to secure my glasses since I don't do activities that would require it.  I should keep something like that in the go bag.

I'm betting the Dewalt case has a car jumper with a variety of plug receptacles.   Just a guess assuming the targeted skill level.

I vote for the chainsaw.  To, you know, fight through to the hordes of undead to get to that FEMA aid station ...

Sorry, you're all wrong. It's a radio. You know, it may be the apocalypse, but there's no way the fans are gonna miss All Things Considered.  :clownshoes:

Mixed feelings here. The article is sort of helpful, but the picture kind of screams, "Buy a bunch of stuff in cans. And water. Gotta have water. Check."

Silver lining? I think it's good to "normalize" prepping. Ever notice how same people who bust your chops (good natured, or otherwise) for carrying a multi tool are always the same people who turn to you when they need a bottle opener?

Some of them will always keep asking for a bottle opener, but if one of them decides to buy one themselves, I think that's a good thing.

The Detroit Free Press just had a really good article titled "Detroit emergency planners see Maui wildfire lesson: Waiting on instructions can be deadly."  It made some really good points and I was going to share it on here, only to have them switch it from being publicly available to putting it behind their subscriber firewall.  :(

Here is the preview quote for the article:
Quote"I think we in government have failed in our training of the public," said former Detroit Police Commander Darin Szilagy, a local emergency planner.

The article basically said that people are relying too much on the government and other authorities to tell them what to do.  It also said that we should be training people to be more capable of handling things on their own and making decisions without having to be told by the powers-that-be.  It didn't go into detail on the "here is how you prepare" (other than to point out that everyone should have a go-bag and a basic list of what goes in one), but was more of the mindset of making decisions based on what is happening and having the knowledge and skills to handle yourself without outside assistance.

Seems like a familiar concept, doesn't it?

Found it!  Archive.org got it before it went behind the paywall:
https://web.archive.org/web/20230825105220/https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2023/08/25/emergency-preparedness-maui-wildfires-lahaina-disasters/70668571007/ (https://web.archive.org/web/20230825105220/https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2023/08/25/emergency-preparedness-maui-wildfires-lahaina-disasters/70668571007/)

Quote"Train yourself, talk to your friends and family, recognize the signs and don't wait for someone to tell you to go," Szilagy said. "Be your own rescuer."
Sounds like some good advice there!

Related to the picture, if you don't drink coconut milk already, don't include it.  I generally try not to have anything in my stores that I don't generally consume because the last thing you want in an emergency is an upset stomach or diarrhea brought on by something your body isn't used to and decided it didn't want.

Tummy Drops or similar ginger candy are good to have in your kit for upset stomach.

I'm testing out a new 'to me' type. My glasses and sunglasses either slide down my nose or fall off if I lean forward working on stuff. especially if i'm sweating or moving fast. very annoying.

So I got these which seem to be working fine for my needs. Pretty good and comfortable for a Dollar a piece. And keep glasses exactly where they are supposed to be with the quick adjust strap.

I've tried other kinds but they are for retention only [keeping them from falling totally off] but don't keep them from just sliding out of place.

I'm keeping them permanently on my Sunglasses, and keep a spare set in my EDC for my regular glasses. I only have an issue with my regular glasses if I'm repairing something in my garage and its darker in there so I'm not wearing sunglasses but am usually leaning over and sweating. So I can just pop them on and off as needed.

Detroit? The government failed there a long time ago.

Quote"Train yourself, talk to your friends and family, recognize the signs and don't wait for someone to tell you to go," Szilagy said. "Be your own rescuer."

Sounds like Katrina was too long ago. Too many people waited for government help that never came. Waited for government warnings that were never issued. Waited for services that that were months away. Medical staff gave up hope and let their patients die or euthanized them. Many police ran away and abandoned their posts. Help was slow in coming and for many never arrived at all.

Be your own rescuer indeed.

Leave early. Go far. Don't look back.

It's like a broken record.  Katrina was not only a glaring example, it wasn't even the most recent.  Too many people aren't paying attention, forget too easily, or just simply think it can't happen to them.

It can and the probability that it will seems to be on the rise.

All I know is if things ever go sideways in my AO, I'm expecting my FEMA-issue Himalayan Pink rock salt to be delivered like, yesterday.

I keep salt rock lamps on hand for just such an urgent emergency. Sure there may dirt on the outside from sitting in my bedroom but scrape that off and you have pink salty goodness underneath. While you are waiting on your free FEMA salt I will be making ice cream.

For people like that, the words "I'm from the government and I'm here to help." sound like an angelic choir.

For the rest of us, hearing those words sounds more like Tiny Tim singing "WAP" by Nicki Minaj. :gonk:

A memory just popped into my old brain.  We had a hurricane here back around 2012, I think it was, - Irene, maybe? - anyway, once we finally got electricity back (ten days later) we were watching the local news with people in the city and 'burbs fussing that all the downed trees hadn't been cleaned up out of the road still and they interviewed one guy who was absolutely ranting about nobody coming to his house to take care of the tree.

The tree that was his tree that had fallen across his own driveway on his own property...

I really wanted a followup on that guy.  How long was it before he figured out it was his responsibility (or did he ever)?  Did he ever stop griping about how some entity had let him down and made him pay for that tree?  Does he still bring it up at family gatherings where all the kids roll their eyes at crazy old Gramps and his fallen tree tale of woe?

Something similar happened here, but with a much sadder outcome.  During a recent series of storms, we had a number of small tornadoes which hit.  A woman was killed in her house in Lansing, MI due to a tree falling on it.  Afterwards, her family went on the news, berating the local government for not taking care of the tree, despite years of complaints about it.

Outrage!  The government's inability to deal with basic safety cost a grandmother her life!  They... uh...  what do you mean the tree was on her neighbor's property, and the city has no responsibility whatsoever?...  Who cares about legalities!!  We need someone to blame that isn't the person next door that we've been friends with for years!!

QuoteOutrage!
These days tragedy is always the fault of others and a lawsuit is the only way to correct the tragedy. Sadly there are a lot more less scrupulous lawyers these days that take on such nutty cases.
