I'd like to see the official equipment inventory. From the article they listed 'survival' books.

They were probably vegans.

QuoteThe group - including the sisters who were in their 40s - had no outdoor survival experience and had watched online videos to learn about how to survive in Colorado's rugged backcountry, Mrs Jara told US media.

:rolleyes1:

Ugh, some people just have terrible ideas. But this is what I often envision when people talk about going to the hills if/when SHTF.

Do these folks qualify for the Darwin Awards or do they not meet the criteria for that ?

When it comes to the Darwin Arwards, the stupider you are, the more qualified you become. I'd say the 2 adult sisters were highly, highly qualified.

I do feel sorry for that 14 yo son.

Yeah. I feel sorry for the kid as well.

ETA: It's things like this that remind me of WoodsWalker's old sig line on the old forum that went "Thou shalt not mess with the forces of Mother Nature, for thou art small and biodegradable."

Or watched the TV show Alone. This was a really stupid way to die.

QuoteIn a last-ditch effort to increase their chance of survival, the Jaras offered the use of a remote property they own in Hartsel.

"There's an RV there, and we have a generator, and there's a general store not far away," Jara said. "We offered it to them so they could at least practice before going out there on their own."

Christine seemed inclined to take them up on their offer, "but Becky didn't want to," Jara said.

And this is why we don't listen to Becky's and Karen's

This. I never bothered with the movie, but that book was absolutely sublime. I've had numerous discussions/debates with friends over whether or not McCandless was a hopeless romantic or an imbalanced suicide risk.

One thing we don't debate? The absolute insanity of willfully refusing aid when it's offered.

My guess is the lady's (Becky) pride and ego wouldn't let her take the offered aid.

Probably felt like she'd be considered 'weak' if she accepted help from others.

And now she and her family are dead because of that pride and ego of hers.

I'd rather swallow my pride and take the hit to my ego if I was in over my head like they were and take any offer of help I got. It'd be better than dying an unnecessary death.
