Title: Naval Center Gulfport Takes Measures to Protect Itself From Indegenous Populatio
Post by: Uomo Senza Nome on June 19, 2023, 06:48:39 PM
Mississippi has the highest murder rates in the US. Jackson in particular has the highest murder rate in all of North America, in fact, nearly the entire world. Don't go there, it literally is unsafe. Jackson a city of 100K accounts for about 1/3 the total murders in the state of 3 million.

Gulfport by comparison is much safer, but still high, especially since 2019, about 1/8 of Jackson.

Anyway thay put up non-bullet resistant shipping containers to stop stray rounds to protect the housing area.

There is so much gun violence in one Mississippi neighborhood that a military base piled up shipping containers to defend itself from stray bullets (msn.com) (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/there-is-so-much-gun-violence-in-one-mississippi-neighborhood-that-a-military-base-piled-up-shipping-containers-to-defend-itself-from-stray-bullets/ar-AA1cICfA?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=9be34d6a7c734e28a396aeedbad0afea&ei=7)

I wouldn't bet the farm those shipping containers are empty.  I'm sure the navy has plenty of "volunteers" to sandbag them.  The Army uses to double or triple sandbag them and make towers out of them in the desert.

it's always good to use non-bullet resistant materials when protecting yourself from bullets.

They should have set up some of those cyclone fences with blue tarp on them. Those are probably a little more non-bullet resistant.

Protected vs not protected

Just some clarity on this.
Gulfport is a 3 +/- hour drive from Jackson, MS.
Jackson, MS and NOLA have similar violent crime rates.
I recommend avoiding both cities.

Note that in LA; NOLA & BR are the main locations for homicides. In MS it is the city of Jackson there were 97.6 homicides per 100k population vs Gulfport's rate of 16.6

16.6 is well more than double the national average of 7.8. NOLA is "only" 52, which was a record high in 2022, so Jackson is almost double.

Part of the problem with the rates themselves is that blacks commit and are victims of homicides at a much higher rate than the national average. This tends to really skew the results with really high populations of black people such as Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, South Carolina and Georgia having the highest black populations and therefore the highest murder rates. Only a generous fraction of the homicides are inter-racial. Conversely the states with the lowest black populations, New Hampshire, Maine, have the lowest murder rates.

Doesn't really help the people living in the higher crime states.

Welp, this kinda means I need to do a little rerouting on my return trip from Idaho.  The plan had me dropping down to Texas on the way back, having a repeat visit with @CG and @12_Gauge_Chimp, then over to Longview to spend a few days at my best friend's place, then home via I-20 to Atlanta and I-85 to Petersburg, VA, and home via I-95 from there.  I wanted to cross LA, MS, and AL off my list of states I haven't been through.

If I just had the Jeep I might have risked it but towing a trailer seriously cuts my maneuverability.

As long as you do not slow down to less than 60 mph you will be safe going through BR & NOLA. MS via I-10 is safe as is Biloxi, MS which is next to Gulfport, MS on the coast.

I think your NOLA #'s are lower from what I saw. NOLA is 74.6 per 100k per this link.

Birmingham, St louis & Baltimore are all more than 50 but less than NOLA.

BTW a homicide rate of 97 per 100k is close to the #1 city.

Trying to do ~700 miles per day.  Starting from my buddy's place in Longview, TX at dawn and a quick stop for breakfast and a bathroom break around Shreveport, I'll be through Jackson about 1000 and outside Birmingham for lunch around 1230, then find a hotel for the night on the NE side of Atlanta around supper time.  Towing the trailer I get ~18mpg with a 24 gallon tank that gives me a comfortable range of about 360 miles, meaning gassing up around Meridian.  Probably best then to top off around Ruston or Monroe in LA and have a mostly full tank passing through Jackson.

Sound good to y'all?

My big concern is rest stops and bathroom breaks.  If I absolutely have to I can stop on the side of the interstate and use the portable camping toilet in the trailer but I'm still going to need regular stops to keep the legs from cramping up.

Note to self: Wear the full size 9mm with the good Barnes ammo when leaving TX.

I rarely go that far north in a car. I would say avoid the city of jackson but the suburbs are likely safer. Birmingham and Atlanta are not much better.

My preferred destination in Atlanta is Roswell in the north of the metro area.

Fun fact, if you remove Jefferson County Al from the state (greater Birmingham) the murder rate for the state drops by 38%.

Kind of like if you take out Chicago, Los Angeles and NYC, the murder rate for the entire US drops a good bit ?

Looks like an average day in Houston.

More like St Louis, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Chicago. Even though the murder rate has really climbed in New York City, it is still relatively low.

Houston is actually going way down, last year and is really dropping this year.

But For some weird reason they have an outsized number of justifiable homicides. Many of which have been caught on camera. I'm sure this is completely unrelated.

When measuring a crime by 100k a city with a large population will always have a lower number. The criminal element in any area tends to be low.

In smaller cities a single incident can skew the stats.

By the same token when measuring murders by absolute count the larger cities will due to the population score negatively.
