Title: Prison shanks for sale.
Post by: Moab on February 22, 2023, 04:00:15 PM
An E for effort. But man. I don't think I would be selling those.

Just shows anyone can build a knife in their garage. But maybe not everyone should. Lol.

He has other ones he's selling that got a little better. But how many knives do you have to make before you realize maybe this isn't my thing?

If they're "real" shanks, then how do we know that they haven't been... uh... "stored" somewhere that we'd rather not touch afterwards?...  :eek1:

I was joking about them being shanks. (But yes. I would not want a booty knife either.) They look so terribly designed and made. That they appear to be prison shanks. Like someone made them out of a piece of metal bed. And shaped and sharpened them on some, in cell, concrete corners or something! Lol.

I applaud the guys efforts. And proof of concept. That he was able to make these himself at home. But selling them seems a bit far fetched. They look ridiculously bad.

Again, at what point do you break thru the denial and realize that some things you just aren't very good at?!

Honestly, I've got to applaud this guy for his effort.

And they're not the worst looking knives I've ever seen. I mean, I've seen some awful looking production knives and those are going for three times as much.

Do I think he ought to apply to be on Forged in Fire just yet ?  Probably not.

Should he keep practicing? Yes and once he's got more experience under his belt then maybe he ought to try selling them.

Agreed. I didn't mean to sound like a dick. I just saw them. And they were so far from the norm being offered in bushcraftusa. I was surprised. I agree tho. He shouldn't stop trying.

No worries, Moab.

I say if the knives work well, then the looks will be secondary to the actual function. That goes for pretty much any knife now that I think about it.

I was expecting worse, but yeah those are rough. Luckily he is selling them cheap.

I really hope he's one of those guys that is really good at treating metal for a quality blade, but it's just awful at the artful side of things.

Hopefully much more function over form, but I wouldn't trust one.

Some people go for that rustic, hand crafted look. Those would probably sell well on Etsy if he came up a clever write up.

But first he needs to invest in a quality camera or at least a semi-current smartphone. Those pics look like they were shot using a circa 2003 640x480 webcam. I mean, seriously dude?

I was going to bring up heat treat too. Who knows how durable they are. But seriously, a fifth grader could draw a better knife. And probably end up with better "grinding" or whatever he did to shape them. It would be a cool "hey. Look at the knives I built for myself." thread. But a for sale thread? Idk.

I don't know the guy. So you have to encourage his efforts.
