Damn.

I don't follow motorsports as much as I used to (I think I stopped when Dale Earnhardt Sr. died), but even so I still knew who Ken Block was.

Never liked marshmallow peeps, but I make a wicked flavored bourbon that uses Hot Tamales candy.  I call it 'Yer Bastard Half Brother'. It's very popular on camping trips and winter outings.  So I owe Mr. Born a debt of gratitude.  I shall be sure to raise my glass the next time I'm sipping it with friends and toast the good man's blessed soul.  :smilie_party_cheers:

A few months shy of 9 years old. No cause of death given, but that's too young.

I've often thought it one of life's cruel ironies that dogs usually only have 12 -15 years on this earth. They are such loving, loyal and emotionally intuitive creatures. They treat you like a hero just for showing up at the end of the day.  They and their humans deserve longer.

Missed this one back in January.  "Charles Kimbrough, a stage and screen actor best known for his performance as anchorman Jim Dial on the CBS comedy series "Murphy Brown," died Jan. 11 in Culver City, Calif. He was 86 years old."

I actually associate him more with the voice of Victor in Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame and also as Georges Seurat in the musical 'Sunday in the Park With George', despite having watched quite a bit of Murphy Brown when it was on TV.  Must be the theater geek in me!

Actor Lance Reddick, best nown for his work on HBO's "The Wire" and the "John Wick" movie franchise, died Friday. He was 60. The actor died of natural causes Friday morning, his rep Mia Hansen said in a statement to USA TODAY Friday.

Another major role of his came in the form of hotel concierge Charon in the "John Wick" movies. In recent weeks, Reddick had been on a press tour for "John Wick: Chapter 4." He was not in attendance at the red carpet premiere for the film earlier this week.

My mother had a number of his albums, so I've been listening to his music for my entire life.  Last fall I traveled to the the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point, Michigan.  While I was there, one of the employees told me that she has been friends with him for 60 years!  IIRC, she had been in college at the time and had seen him perform at a local venue.  This was back in 1962, so he hadn't hit it big just yet.

Here's an excerpt from an email I sent to my parents that evening:

Jim Brown wasn't just some running back who played for the Browns 60 years ago. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes who ever lived.

In high school, Brown earned 13 letters playing football, lacrosse, baseball, basketball, and running track.

Brown broke all kinds of records in American Football at the college and professional level and is widely considered the best running back to have ever play the game, certainly the standard to which all others who aspire to greatness are compared. In NFL football the "Jim Brown Award" is given to the best Running Back every year. He was also an excellent kicker. in 1956, ".... a 61–7 Syracuse rout of Colgate, he rushed for 197 yards, scored six touchdowns, and kicked seven extra points for a school-record 43 points." A record that stands to this day.  Brown was so good in the pros he actually drug Cleveland into a Championship in 1964, the last year they ever won and they were runner-ups in 1965.

In 1965 the owner of the Browns, Art Modell, made the terrible decision to force Brown to choose between acting or football. Brown picked acting. Modell really regretted that later and said it was among the worst decisions he ever made.

The Lacrosse Hall of Fame regards him as the greatest lacrosse player who ever lived. The "Jim Brown Award" is given every year to the MVP in lacrosse. While he played they had to alter the rules because he was literally unstoppable.

Jim Brown served in the US Army Reserve for four years while playing professional football attaining the rank of Captain.

100 Rifles was one of the worst movies ever made by a major studio in that era with a full size budget and a disaster that sank his budding career. Before that however he played in The Dirty Dozen, an excellent work of fiction about a bunch of criminals recruited for a suicide mission during WWII. He was in several other films that were hits of that era such as Ice Station Zebra and Riot. I recommend all three films.

While he was an amazing athlete, he did have a darker side where he was a serial abuser of women he was in relationships with. Most of the time the women would drop the charges, as is common in domestic relationships where abuse occurs. This eventually landed him prison for a short stint for vandalism of his ex-wife's car.

He claimed that incarceration doesn't work, but he never got in trouble again after that.

Well damn...

My wife always said that Tina Turner was put on this Earth to show white women how to dance in heels.  (edit: evidently my wife borrowed that line from John Denver) The woman was amazing in those heels.

One of my favorite memories of her was when I worked at MSG and she did a tour right after Beyond Thunderdome came out.  At one point in the show, she ran backstage for a costume change between songs, then the lights dimmed and the opening bars of We Don't Need Another Hero started to play as she walked slowly back onstage, only a single spotlight following her, and she was dressed in a long, dark cloak with the hood up and wrapped tight around her.  She got to a spot in the center of the stage close to the edge and started to sing the opening lines, still cloaked and hooded.  You didn't realize it at first but the part of the stage she was on was slowly rising into the air, a circle about the size of a large manhole cover.  By the time the chorus came she was 20' in the air over the stage. That's when she threw off the cloak and it fell down to the audience revealing her in the "Aunty Entity" outfit, and as she belted out the chorus she started to dance.  20' over the stage, which itself was 15' high, wearing pumps with 4" heels, the woman proceeded to sing and dance like she had all the room in the world.  No net.  No safety harness, just Tina, a microphone, and the spotlight.  It was easily the greatest performance I saw in all my years at MSG.

Aunty found her way...home

 :smiley_goodbye:

Yep. Bunch of other stuff too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cormac_McCarthy_bibliography

I just noticed that Blood Meridian is in the works for film. It is considered one of the greatest Western Novels ever written and his best work. Interesting tie-in is that Ben Nichols of Lucero did an entire album about the book with a biography on all the main characters. The titular song "Last Pale Light in the West" was selected by TWD as the Govenor's Theme early in the show. It is a rather poignant scene in the series. The whole album is great if you like that kind of music. I call that influential.

Tony Bennett was also a veteran of WW2.

He was drafted into the US Army in 1944 and was assigned to the 255th Infantry Regiment of the 63rd Infantry Division.

Towards the end of the war, Bennett was involved in the liberation of a concentration camp (the Kaufering subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp). He'd later write in his autobiography about this experience and say "I saw things no human being should ever have to see."

Bennett was the real deal in WWII. Unlike a lot of future entertainers of his generation who did USO shows or were clerk-typists he served on the front lines in tough fighting until the war ended, then did shows. The experience made him a life long pacifist. He was no coward though. He got demoted for dining with blacks in a segregated Army and marched Selma to Montgomery in 1965 and was neck deep in the civil rights movement for 40 years. His driver was murdered by the Klan.

It is difficult to mourn a man who lived such a long and amazing life who did what he loved for 70 long years, championed justice and always tried to make the world a better place. All the while he was a class act. We are all a little poorer without him in the world, his type is a real rarity in the world and vanishing breed.

I think more than a few of the events that people think of as "negative" were actually heroic. Speaking truth to power is a tough way to go in life but she did it. She had no regrets either. I'd much rather look back at a time I stood for the helpless, then feeling guilty about not doing it 30 years later. If Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson support you, and Madonna is against you, you are probably doing something right. I'd also say that history bore out her actions and if it didn't say; condone the techniques, her argument was sound and just.

Still, we all do dumb shit at times, and I hope when I am gone my friends and family remember all the dumb shit I did through my life and laugh uproariously at it, while raising a glass.

I was in my 20's when Pee Wee's Playhouse aired, so technically I was outside the target audience.

It didn't matter: it was a wonderfully demented and boundlessly clever take on children's programming - I had never seen anything like it.  My girlfriend and I loved it and faithfully watched every Saturday morning.  And it gave future Hollywood greats like Laurence Fishbourne a start in show business.

From what I remember, Rob Zombie worked as a production assistant on the show as well.

As for the target audience, I was born in '85 and would've been considered the target audience by most.

I loved the show when I was a kid, but I was really too young to fully appreciate or understand the humor. I just saw bright colors and an adult acting like a giant doofus and that was enough for me back then.

The funeral may be held behind door number one, door number two, door number three, or he may already have been cremated and is in the box that Jay is carrying down the steps, or the one Carol is holding on the stage.

His music and a few other smart choices made Shrek what it was. Whenever All Star would come on the radio when my kids were kids, they would sing along with the "scary monster song". Hate to see such talent go so young.

Bummer, he was one of the greats. His minibio:

Richard Roundtree's iconic career began while attending Southern Illinois University where he was on a football scholarship. After being spotted Richard signed with Johnson Publications to model in their Ebony Fashion Fair, touring 79 cities in 90 days. But rather than returning to school, Roundtree headed off to his home state of New York to begin acting lessons. He soon was asked to become a member of New York's acclaimed Negro Ensemble Company. A succession of Off-Broadway roles resulted in his starring as Jack Johnson in "The Great White Hope".

Richard's life would change forever when he was cast in the role of private detective John Shaft in the legendary "Shaft" movie franchise. This film immediately thrust Richard into the international spotlight, not only making him a worldwide household name but one of Hollywood's hottest young actors.

In the over 100 film and television projects that followed Richard had the opportunity to share the screen with a list of Hollywood's most legendary actors including Clint Eastwood, Peter O'Toole, David Niven, Laurence Olivier, in addition to Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman, and Brad Pitt.

On television he has been a series regular on several hit shows where he has garnered an NAACP Image Award nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Series, and a Peabody Award for his narration of the PBS documentary "The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow".

Richard was born in New Rochelle, New York, to Kathryn and John Roundtree. An advocate in the fight against breast cancer and a 25-year male breast cancer survivor himself, Richard has taken a stand by participating in events that help raise awareness and funds towards finding a cure for this disease.

There generally has to be some other factor in order to drown in a hot tub.  I think it was disingenuous for them to report it as a drowning.  The article with the subpar headline does mention that the call was for a heart attack, but not until the very end.

He commanded the Apollo 8 mission.  Carrying his crew further from Earth than anyone had traveled before, Apollo 8 offered humanity a perspective of our home world never before seen.  This was the moon mission that produced the famous Earthrise photo, showing us our planet from afar: a tiny oasis of color and life amidst the cold, dark vastness of space.  Borman claimed afterwards that while the moon was the focus of the mission, it was looking back at Earth that impressed him the most.

It's been a terrible year for astronauts, he is the third Apollo crew member and 4th astronaut to pass this year. They aren't dying young though, Bobko was the youngest at 85. Would that I could, make it that far along and live half as well.

Some day in the not too distant future every man who has ever been to the moon will have passed. While there is a joy in knowing they lived such lives, there is also a sadness that no one else is.

Another man that lived an amazing life and he huge influence on the American Experience and helped bring about social change. He flew over 50 combat missions in WWII as a B17 Gunner/ RTO then had a successful career in marketing before easing into entertainment.

Norman Lear brought real black programming to television. Sanford and Son, the Jeffersons, Good Times were all his productions. He brought real talk with it. The programs might have been sitcoms but they presented the issues of the day and he did his best to present them fairly so each side felt they had an advocate for their voice. He was working up till the time he passed doing what he loved. We should all be so lucky.

I come from a family that was pretty racist as I grew up, and it was shows like Sanford and Son and the Jeffersons that shaped my understanding of black Americans as I grew up. Lear's shows had a huge impact in my life. They humanized black Americans, and pretty much un-othered them for me. Seeing stories about black Americans and their struggles made me realize that they pretty much share the same struggles as my family. I have a lot of respect for Norman Lear, and I'm sad to see him go.

QuoteKiyoshi Yamazaki, 9th dan of karate and figure of martial arts in Hollywood, has died. He is best known for being Arnold Schwarzenegger's martial arts and sword teacher in Conan the Barbarian (1982) and its sequels in the 1980s. His other famous students are Sting, Wilt Chamberlain, Brigitte Nielsen, Grace Jones, Sean Connery and Dennis Quaid. He was also Kyle McLachlan's master in "Dune" in 1984.

He performed cameos and stunts in a number of movies he was hired on as trainer. In the first Conan he notably disciplines an unserious student. He did great work. If you saw a movie where the fights looked real in the 1900s he was likely involved in it.

Quote"When we got back to Ubon, they didn't know whether to court-martial me or pin a medal on my chest," he recalled in an interview with an Air Force publication in 1996. "Some people felt I should have let Earl and Bob eject and take their chances, so I could land my aircraft safely."

"Pardo's Push" entered Air Force legend, an extraordinary act of aerial ballet, but one that would never be prescribed in any pilot manuals or flying simulators.
