We are saddened to report that Felix Baumgartner, Austrian skydiver and BASE jumper known for his 14 October 2012 jump from a helium balloon at an altitude of 119,431 feet — during which he set world records by reaching an estimated top speed of 843.6 mph (Mach 1.25), becoming the first person to break the sound barrier without a vehicle — has died in a fatal paragliding accident while flying over Porto Sant'Elpidio, Italy.
Felix flew west today at 56 years of age.
