You can make any outlet enabled with an inline device. Most climate control systems have an adapter.

Didn't the Final Destination movies involve "fate" devising clever but random ways of killing victims through mundane circumstances? 

If someone hasn't done so already, they should make a movie about AI using web-enabled household devices to kill people in inventive ways.

Things like having a Roomba lurking nearby and a murderous AI killing the lights just as a housewife is approaching the top of basement stairs with a laden laundry basket. Preferably with a web-enabled bandsaw on a workbench at the bottom of those stairs. 

Towards the end of the movie, law enforcement would get wise that something deadly is happening at 223 Springfield Street, and send in an entire team of heavily armed SWAT officers, who are nevertheless systematically killed off in increasingly clever ways.

It could be entitled "The Internet of [Needful] Things". Or "Smart Home, Deadly Home".

I don't remember the specifics, but there was an X-files episode where Mulder and Scully eat dinner at an automated restaurant, and then are pursued by a number of different technological items which are being controlled by the restaurant's AI (because they had failed to tip).  It was season 11, episode 7 "Rm9sbG93ZXJz" (not a typo).

Killer security robots vs. 80's teens (who all are actually in their 20s or 30s).

I'd guess that it has more to do with protecting the arms, maintaining a center of gravity, and/or helping it to be in an advantageous position to get back up after the fall.
