There are reports of children suffering jaundice from liver damage caused by vitamin A toxicity in areas where there are measles outbreaks.

Vitamin A does not treat or prevent measles. The mechanism by which vitamin A can improve measles outcomes is if the measles causes a vitamin A deficiency in the patient, in which case, vitamin A treats the secondary condition of vitamin A deficiency, not the primary measles infection. Children are more susceptible to vitamin A toxicity, which is essentially an overdose of the vitamin, which is why it is important to only give vitamin A under direct medical supervision.
