I have a Barnett Recruit. Iirc it's 300fps. And older model from 10 yrs ago.

Been looking around at what's out there. Anyone into crossbows? Know what latest advancements are worth the money? Seeing these new crank cockers. Any good?

Modern ones with scopes are incredibly accurate.  I made a 75 yard bullseye with one the first day I took it shooting.  Most are 150 to 175 pull and can be either crank or use a cocking string (you get a good mechanical advantage with the string).  Unless you're Daryll from TWD, don't even try to cock it with your bare hands.  You can reload with the crank in your deer stand, but the noise of the ratchet is very loud in the woods.  The cord is very quiet, but you need to stand up to do it.

Hunting buddy of mine has a few Ravin crossbows he got over the last few years. He likes his middle of timeline the best. He uses the mechanical broadheads, and most of the times blows right through the deer. He has a low power crossbow scope maybe 2X. The problem with them it they run 2K.

I have a Killer Instinct 405, i like it can shoot it 60 to 70 yards with little to no problem. Got 1 deer with it so far. It also hold the title for giving my my first ever scope bit. I think i got it on sale at Dicks for $200 ish

I don't care much about the bolts or scope. I assumed your going to want to replace the bolts. And I'm sure you can find a decent scope for sub 100 yards for fairly cheap.

But the BBB page on that company is brutal.

I'm basically trying to figure out if I should sell this NIB Barnett Recruit. And buy a new one. It was a $300 crossbow at the time. That I paid maybe $150 for. Still new in box at the time. I think it shoots 300fps. Which is a bit slow compared to newer crossbows.

I don't recall but a top company sells Killer Instinct as their second level crossbows. They sell a higher one as another brand. But they are like $1000+. The Killer Instincts are more in the $300-750 range. And seems to be spoken about in the forums well. But man that BBB page is one star and 60 reviews. All of them about arms breaking and the company ignoring all customer service contact.

Seems like the metal rail for the bolts to travel on is a new crucial development. And 400fps seems about the norm. Mine and the newest version the Barnett Recruit XP are 300fps and 320fps. Both $300 MSRP.

I spent a couple hours researching this the other night. But will spend more time on it. Mine has the cocking rope. Good to know about the noisy ness of the crank. And that the rope is hard to use it in a tree stand. I don't do much tree stand hunting. So not sure that's an issue for me.

So how noisy is the crank? And how fast is it to crank? Slower than the rope?

If there's any archery shops near you, Moab, you may stop by there and check out the options they've got.

There's two archery shops near me that have a pretty good selection of bows and crossbows that range from beginner to "take out a second or third mortgage on your house" level of price.

Seriously, the one shop NT2C and I went to  when he was in my AO on his epic road trip had a crossbow that was over 3K.

If there is a bow shop here it's not close to the city. And doubt very seriously they would have any honest information to share. But it would be nice to see a few of these in person.

I need to spend more time on the crossbow forum. I just want to see if there have been enough improvements over the last ten yrs. Since my crossbow was manufactured. To justify buying another one in the $300 range. Preferably on sale or used for more like the $200 range.

I've shot bow alot. Since I was old enough to shoot. But always wanted a crossbow. As they shoot such a higher fps. And so much easier to aim and shoot steadily.

I obtained 3 with the 3rd the magazine fed adder that Jeorg Sprag of sling shot U T fame designed. 130, 100 ,& 90 lbs pull. The leaves are interchangeable.  The adder has silencer string buffers, and a better red dot than the original models.
