Free USGS topo maps found online

No, I'm not a hypocrite - I still have and use paper maps.
However,....   mot unreasonable for planning prior to spending the bucks for a paper product.

If I'm going to visit someplace, I have no problem working up a one-time map to print out on the home printer (not to scale) as a temp measure.  This is esp a deal if the visit will be a one-time visit. 

The online stuff is updated via overhead satellite images worked back into the map.  About as accurate as you are going to find for the price (your tax dollars at work, eh?)

Staples (or some other office supply store) might be able to print it to scale.

  After reading this thread. I was poking around the USGS website and searching maps online and found this cool site

For when you want to see what an area looked like before . Invaluable for old rail lines and no longer existent structures

REI will print custom maps - you define the area, for a reasonable fee and will print on Tyvek.
