The Double Star First AR Build tradition

Back before this site existed, in the long ago days of ZS, my birthday was coming up and SMoAF, our
then resident Virginia Magistrate and Class III firearms dealer (SMoAF passed away the following year) found out that I didn't own an AR, and that the only time I'd ever even handled an AR platform weapon was back in the 70s when I was a US Navy Gunner's Mate.  That was when he hatched his evil plot and offered to buy lunch for me and my wife on my birthday.

At lunch that day David said that he'd also brought me a gift, an AR of my very own... and then proceeded to hand me a Double Star stripped lower.  My wife had a puzzled look on her face as David and I both cracked up, and I had to explain to my wife that she had no idea of the evil that man had just inflicted on our household budget.

The AR that resulted from the build of that lower proudly hangs on the wall of my office, ready to defend my home.

I decided to make this a UFoZS tradition when @12_Gauge_Chimp said he wanted to build an AR for his nephew's 21st birthday, his first AR.  I hustled my fat little fingers over to Double Star USA as soon as I could afford it and a brand new stripped lower will be headed to Texas next week.

I'd like this tradition to continue, in memory of David (SMoAF), with one of us stepping up and gifting a Double Star lower to any regular member who is looking to build their first AR.  The lowers are good quality, forged 7075 T6 aluminum, and well worth the price.

I might have a cheap red dot and/or some other small parts to donate. Do you need those as well @12_Gauge_Chimp ?

This is an awesome idea. I've done the same with 2 very close friends in the past. One was a pink derringer. Lol. And the other gave me an assembled but unfinished muzzle loader that he had. I tore it down, refinished and completed it. He came shooting with me one day. And he didn't even recognize that the muzzleloader we shot was his own. After shooting it I told him. And regifted it back to him. It really did turn out beautifully. He still has it.

You're more than welcome to send any parts you want to donate, Moab. That'd be awesome. :smiley_clap:

I'll send you my address here in a minute.

I thought I had an AR quad rail. But its AK. I do have a Sightmark red dot. I just need to find it. Maybe I'll send you a couple prizes too. ;)

That'd be nice, Moab.

Only things I've gotten so far for my nephew's AR build is a grip, a carry handle sight and an ambi safety. And that's all from my parts drawer.

I swear I had more spare AR stuff, but I guess I was wrong.

I still owe you a lower and I'll get that to you next month if I have to hand deliver it.

Well, it took a few months, but Project SMoAF (that's my nickname for my nephew's AR) is complete.

I posted a pic of the completed (ok, semi-complete as there's a couple small things I still need to pick up before it's truly complete.) AR in Firearms Chat if anyone wanted to see it.

Here's the pic, Moab.

ETA: This is an older pic.

I've since added a Bushnell TRS-25 optic, a Blackhawk sling and some rubber Mlok covers (place holders for the Troy Industries Squid grips I'll be ordering as soon as I can).

What else do you need?

Come tax time next year, I'll be adding a Streamlight PolyTac and a Magpul light mount. Other than that, it's pretty much done.

Don't forget mags and ammo!  (I can help with that)

Mags are kind of covered (I tossed in six Pmags from my stash), but ammo is lacking.

Are all the black Friday deals advertised yet? I mean searchable. Not available yet obviously.

Let me look at the mlok stuff I have.

@12_Gauge_Chimp

I wasn't very clear above. I have a bunch of mlok stuff leftover. What else might you use chimp?

I'll put together a list too. See if you need any of this stuff.

Mainly what I'm planning on getting is some Troy Industries Squid grips to cover the Mlok holes and a Magpul light mount.

I'll be getting those after the holidays.
