I'm going to predict there'll be at least a dozen out-of-towners getting stuck in the mud and needing a tow.

This is prime opportunity for the tractor-driving sort to make a little extra cash.

Indeed.

With the massive influx of out-of-towners coming in, my feeling is the local tow truck companies are going to be pretty busy dealing with the ones that get stuck.

Busy to the point that folks will be waiting hours for a tow and that's where Billy Joe Jim Bob with his John Deere will come in.

Some things to consider:
1) We only have 5 tow trucks within about....uhmmm...a 40 mile radius.
2) Tractors cost a shit-ton more than the average car.
3) Trust me when I say priority will be given to locals.
4) If they get stuck in the wrong area of our lovely county, that pricey I-phone is going to be less useful than a Nokia *brick* burner phone from a 7-11. We do not have full coverage up here.
5) We have ONE cab up here. Not a "cab company", ONE CAB! Driven by a grumpy old guy named Craig. The cab does not have a meter. In town, one way, 7 bucks. Need to get to Boston? That's $600 and Craig needs to stop by hs house to let his wife know before he leaves. Uber and Lyft do not exist up here, deal with it.
******************************
News crews have started to show up to do a bit of *recon* before the eclipse day. The store has been on WMUR once, and ABC national news showed shots of downtown Colebrook the other night.
******************************
Remember how I told you we had the only EV charger for about 70 miles or so?
Somehow, while we were all working today, somebody either hit it or purposely vandalized it, exposing a lot of the wiring and circuitry. With a huge storm moving in. Exposed wiring & circuits + heavy, wet snow and high winds = a bad thing. So, our bagging crew and night manager ran out with....massive rolls of shrink wrap (from the meat room), bungee cords, duct tape and straps and effected a protective cover of sorts for the charger. But it is not operational.
:panic:
Calls have been made to get a repair crew up here right damn now, but the nearest crew is in Concord, or possibly Burlington---maybe. Both are hours away, though Burlington is closer. The governor is in the loop about this and is trying to get us a crew.
*********************************
The temperature dropped like a rock this evening (around 4 to 5 pm) and it started spitting snow. I left work at 7. I have the next two days off, though I am on the "call in if needed" board.
The storm is supposed to go from tonight until Saturday.
Sunday will be clearing with temperatures up to 50.
Monday is clear and sunny with highs up to 53.
According to NOAA and the Weather Channel, the best viewing in the US will be....right here.

Just texted the following to a friend who lives nearby here in rural Maine:

When do you suppose it ever made sense to have power lines above ground and exposed to predictably snowy weather in northern climates?

I didn't even bother asking him IF he also lost power. This nor'easter isn't supposed to let up until sometime Friday. That'll be the earliest it'll be safe to send out the line crews.  Sigh. In-house temp still 52.8 deg here in the living room - warmest spot in my house. I'll fire up the Buddy Mr Heater (really starting to love that little guy) when it drops below 50 deg.

Fun fact: it doesn't have to be 32 degrees to be cold enough to see your breath ...

Underground lines would make sense in a way....but....gotta dig below the frostline, then there are frost heaves...
No matter which way you go, weather can screw it all up.

I hear ya. And I'm being partially facetious because I know America is a vast country that couldn't afford the added expense when rural electrification projects really got going in the 1st half of last century.

But European countries seemed to have figured it out.

I will guarantee there's an onsite generating plant, if not as primary power then as backup, and overhead wires leading to its immediate vicinity.

Berlin receives snowfall for 27.7 days throughout the year, and the snow accumulates up to a depth of 4.8 inches
Paris  March signals the end of regular snowfall in Paris and records ab accumulation of 0.12 inches (3 millimeters) after 0.6 snowfall days.
Thanks to London's maritime climate, its typical temperature is fairly mild throughout the winter.
It doesn't often snow in Amsterdam. If it does, it's usually in December and January. And the snow melts almost immediately after it touches the ground.
Officially, the period during which Vienna Austria gets snow is between November 15th and March 15th. Snow can occur before this or after this, but it is much less likely.

People haven't started showing up here in mass yet - but it's early.  I've friends (2) coming, but a former co-worker has 10 coming.  They're expecting ~400,000 people coming here for it.  I'm not planning on leaving my house Sunday or Monday.  Time to fire up the grill (even if it's cold) and pull out the lawn chairs.  Oh, and popcorn - must have popcorn to watch the idiots....
