Quote"It's the same for all volcanoes that have been quiet for generations. Campi Flegrei may settle into a new routine of gently rising and subsiding, as seen at similar volcanoes around the world, or simply return to rest," Stefano Carlino, a researcher at the Vesuvius Observatory, said in the statement. "We can't yet say for sure what will happen. The important point is to be prepared for all outcomes."

You know, be ready JIC. A full blown eruption would be like a nuclear winter for several years resulting in mass starvation and a huge die off event.

The dangerous thing about the phlegrean fields is that it cemented itself in. It has a natural layer of pozzuolana, the main reactive of opus caementicium. The area was used by the romans as the main mining area for this purpose. Essentially it has a big cap of cement, so if it does go boom it is likely going to be a big one.
It has been quite active throughout the centuries, the area surrounding it sometimes rises over 1m and shrinks again and their are layers of sulfur in some basements of nearby houses.

Different to the last decades is that the numbers don't follow the expectations and don't decrease.

There have been speculations that it might have a connection to the magma chambers of surrounding volcanoes like vesuvio, but that is purely speculative.

I have it on my list of things that could happen, but can't do anything to prepare for anyway. :smiley_shrug:

The graph does look quite alarming. The number of problems created by blocking out the sky say even by reducing light transmission to 50% of normal have increased the last few decades. So I don't know of a good way to prepare for it either.

In the United States, we have become more reliant on wind and solar power, both of which would be reduced dramatically. But of course the big problem would be food. Even if you had a 3 years supply of food on hand, the conflicts created by scarcity of resources would quickly overwhelm the planet.

Can't prepare for?
Do you think you may be directly affected by a deadly over pressure wave? How many miles/ km are you from there.

The nuclear/volcanic winter aftermath can be prepped for to some degree

They keep talking about the Yellowstone mega volcano and what would happen.

And for me it will be the Antarctic ice shelf tsunami, I'll have 6 hours if that happens

It's roughly 1000km to Naples, it's not going to impact me directly.
I have very limited storage capacity and financial means and need to consider what doable preps benefit us the most. For me to prepare for something like a volcanic winter is simply unrealistic. Dangers like forest fires and economic hardships are a very likely danger where and how i live, to invest my few resources into prepping for a supervolcanic eruption that might not happen in my lifetime or at all is simply not the most feasible decision.

I'd love to hear about your 6 hour plan. That is not a lot of time to get out of a populated area.

In October the threat level went up "Italy's civil protection agency said in October it would be moving some parts of the area to next level, orange, given the intensity of the recent activity."

I keep seeing articles posted on this Black Swan event. It will definitely be a party wipe if it kicks off hard. Due to the current low level of non-human mammal life could be looking at mass mammalian extinction. I've decided to not prepare for living a frigid existence under the Earth for a decade or more.
